Good Racing Games!

Archive: 44 posts

Yeah,
am kinda bored of littlebigplanet  and i am looking for a good racing game so i kinda need someones opinion on my choices.

First of all, i kinda want a game that has like maybe a online cruise mode, or like in burnout paradise "Freeburn"

and a big open map.

the choices are

Midnight Club Los Angeles.

Test Drive Unlimited.

And Burnout Paradise.

i can't make up my mind.

Quick notes:

Burnout Paradise has an open world, but eventually it just gets plain boring. Because although you can explore and try to smash stuff, it's ultimately unrewarding, because you don't actually get anything. Essentially, you're getting a driving game, not a racing game, because the actual core racing ball got dropped somewhere along the way. If you're a real racing fan, it'll be unsatisfying. If you just like a free-roaming driving game, you'll be pretty well set. Just a note: You'll be in love with it for a while. But that dies pretty quickly once you have the city down, and once you've got most of the cars and can't customize them.

Midnight Club: LA doesn't treat the open world exploration as well, although it's still certainly there, but the racing is significantly better. Since it's checkpoint based, it doesn't turn into "get on a straight and don't crash" like Burnout does, it actually becomes a solid course, but the open-world openness (heh) still applies, as there are often multiple ways to take a turn, in addition to significantly less limited and repetitive cross-city nav races like Burnout. Plus, some pretty ridiculous customization options, and a sweet in-car camera. If you came here to race, this is your ride.

Test Drive, from what I can tell, is in the grain of Need for Speed titles. Open, essentially empty world, closed off for tracks. Probably won't suit your bill.

As for the online, Midnight Club is more "organized" than Burnout is. The latter's Freeburn has a sort of loose competition with no actual reward to it, and really has no structure, but where it shines is the challenges it has. Host selects one of many of these challenges, and then the players complete the requirements. The problem with this is that a single person who's being an idiot or just has no clue makes it grind down to a halt, and so actually need a bunch of guys who are skilled and really organized to get anything done, and then people leave and come so quickly that it's never stable enough to really do anything when you have this. The challenges themselves are all very simplistic, and often incredibly easy, which makes people holding it up just that much more frustrating. There are a few games thrown in, which usually fail due to the players' lack of cohesion, and races, which are one-dimensional.

Midnight Club's online equivalent is lacking in comparison, due to not having the dynamic tracking that Freeburn has, and without the challenges, meaning that just driving around with a bunch of other cars is what it boils down to. However, the actual racing is much more competitive, and there are a number of solid games utilizing the open-world structure, which is more than Burnout can attest to. Plus, since it handles higher numbers of players and complete cooperation isn't required, the people that don't know what they're doing get pretty well lost in the mix and are inconsequential. (Although with MC:LA's nature, there are very few people in that order.)

I fracking love Burnout! It's cheap and they've supported the game soooo well with free stuff.

It's $20 on disc or on the Playstation Store. No reason not to IMO.

OutRun Online Arcade is coming soon for the PSN and XBLA, and it looks pretty awesome. Speaking of which, you should play the OutRun games. OutRun, OutRunners, OutRun 2 + its rereleases and OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast are all brilliant games.

If you have a fast enough computer as well as Steam, download Trackmania Nations Forever. It's got some of the craziest user-made tracks ever created and on top of that, it's free.

I also vaguely remember a racing game on the Nintendo 64 called Extreme-G. It was basically a rip-off of WipeOut, but from what I can remember, it was just as fun. Then again it's been ages since I've played it.

In your choices there I would definetely focus on Burnout Paradise.

If you want to play the best off-road racing title this gen, PLEASE grab Motorstorm 2. It's the very definition of awesome and tons better than Pure.

For Street Racing style, take Midnight Club LA.

Sadly, there's no good simulation racing on the PS3 though. You could fuel your appetite with GT5 Prologue and pray the full game comes out before year 2026.
Keep an eye on Need For Speed Shift that is due this fall. It's going to be a simulation racing and it should be great. Why? Because the dev that is making the game is ex-people from "Blimey Studio" who made some of the greatest simulations on PC for Simbin, GTR and GTR2.

And pray I do. To me, GT is the ONLY racing game, period. And look what I have waiting for me when it gets released:

You can buy crappy metal tubing-based ones that don't look nearly as good and cost you $400.

I built this out of MDF for about $150 and purchased a real racing carseat for $200. The pic isn't quite fully assembled below. There is a floor panel which I have my Logitech DFP pedals firmly mounted to, and the wheel clamps onto the table top. The seat is fully adjustable just like in a real car, and the entire unit is solid as all hell.

This particular one, no, you can't buy, but I have the blueprints saved if you ever want to make one yourself. You'll need a table saw and a jigsaw at the very least to cut the pieces.

hmm... I guess you would have some hard time in simulation racers then.

I'd suggest your try some Midnight Club LA and Outrun2 Coast to Coast on PSN when it will come out.

Youtube is your friend.

Watch this video: YouTube - Sega Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast HD Quality Arcade Racer

Watch it in HD if you can. Outrun is pure old school arcade racing fun!

Well, if you don't like arcade racers you're quite busted because sim racing titles are rare an few on console. There's also NONE of them on the PS3 outside GT5 Prologue.

You might want to pick up arcade racers that are less old school or other styles like offroad or something.

In that case i'm back at suggesting Burnout Paradise and Motorstorm 2.

Honestly, if your trying to get a COD, I would suggest WaW, more people play it, and it the online is pretty much the same as COD4, just older weapons. Same perk system, with more perks, and more prestige levels, and yeah. And it's coming out with some DLC.

Oh and how can we forget, Nazi Zombies, that itself deserves a buy.

Burnout Paradise, it's cheap, and fun, its definately worth the 20 dollars on PSN, has a lot of gameplay, you can easily put like 200 hours onto this game. Possibly more.

hmm i love COD WAW....myabe its just not your style vhalt, although it is very hyped up I really enjoy the mulit player on it. (with the level up and perk system on line that holds A LOT of game play vaule) and nazi zombies like whaaale said.

although burn out is really cheap and is very fun too. both great games but i would go w/ COD WAWA

I think CoD4 is much better than WaW. Definatly get CoD4. I got that and Burnout, and i'd say CoD4 has much more replay value with their online system. (though burnouts is brilliant too).2009-02-26 23:54:00

its not technically 5 its still 4 just kind of an expansion. i like both games but World at War is much more polished than 4. After going back and playing 4 just the interface and everything is more polished..

plus you get to sick a pack of dawgs on people online; the maps are still great for WAW. i think i like them better than 4, also NAZI ZOMBIES!.

i know a lot of people say they like 4 better but i prefer World at War. The guns arnt any worse than 4, and the atmosphere is great.

im not sure how the replay is better than COD WAW. WAW has more perks and prestige levels. I'm guessing its obvioulsy personal preference but i don't get the bias for 4 but then again i have one for WAW

We didn't talk about GRID and DIRT because they still are arcade racers. And not really good either.

are you smoking?
they arent arcade racers really,
and they have sexy graphics and it takes skills to actually drive, its not like mario kart that you just go, you have to time it and always becarefull when adding gas cuz you can spin out.

Sure don't. Have you ever played real sim racers?
DIRT and GRID are having a more realistic approach to things but still fall in the non sim category really.

Oh don't worry i'm not talking about games I didn't play.
And I tried GRID as soon as I could because Codemaster was actually a great history of good racing games behind them. TOCA 3 last gen was the best simulation available on console. When I vomitted a bit on myself realising that GRID didn't even came CLOSE to TOCA in matter or realism I stopped playing.

TOCA 3 have been released on PS2, Xbox and PC. I think this is the best game Codemaster ever made.
