LBP3 GameJam - Jammers Share their Experiences!

In September 2014, a few lucky people from the LittleBigPlanet community were chosen to travel to Sumo Digital’s hometown of Sheffield and get their hands on the latest build of LittleBigPlanet 3 for 24 hours. A lot can happen during a single day, and so here is a little insight into everyone’s experience.

Just another day, sat at the computer catching up on orders and getting my email inbox cleared, and a message pops up on Twitter from StevenI. “Hey, are you free to come to Sheffield in September?”

A furrowed brow, a pause on the reply button, and suddenly I’m frantically logging in to Skype. “What’s happening? Is everything ok? Have I done something wrong? Are the lawyers going to be waiting for me?”

No, as it turned out, there was a GameJam on the horizon, and I was on the list. To further increase my excitement, my husband, radio_statik, was invited too! A whole 24 hour event to meet other community members face-to-face, play LittleBigPlanet 3, and generally have a swell time. Count me in.

Well, I was on holidays and StevenI tweeted me that I got an email. I read it and "OMG!!!" - It was so cool to get this message! The first thing I did was say YES!!!
It was a great honour to be invited to go to the jam. Something I'd always wanted to be able to tick off my LBP bucket list.
StevenI messaged me on twitter, so thinking he made a mistake and meant it for someone else, I messaged back immediately to accept before he realized what he had done.
I received a message on my ps3. I thought it was a joke. I thought someone was pretending to be Steven.
As any LBP fan would be, I was over the moon and honoured to be invited. I'd been chatting with Steven on Skype - he told me about the event and asked if I wanted to come along.
At first I thought; who, me? I never really thought I would get a opportunity like that, it’s the thing of LBP legends but after picking up my vita and getting very scared a smile never left my face for weeks to come.
Steven and the team were planning everything for so long! He mentioned it on Skype ages ago so I kept badgering him for updates. Originally it looked like it was going to be the week before and I cancelled going to a wedding for the event. Witnessing people pledging their endless love for each other or playing on the Playstation for hours on end. Gotta prioritise! Luckily the date changed and I got to do both. Not sure which one was harder to stay awake through though!
When I found out that I was invited for the Jam, It was when I had just woken up on a saturday or sunday XD! I looked at my phone where it said Steveni has Private messaged you on twitter! I opened the message and it said "sorry for the short notice but I am just wondering if you are able to come to the LBP3 gamejam! I sat there like WHAAAAT D: ME BUT WHAI WHAT DID I DO OMG GAH *runs downstairs shouting MOTHA! noticing she wasn't in! I then saw my dog and was like, “Frankie! I’ve been invited to a GameJam!” She licked my face and ran to get her lead.
Steven asked me if I’d like to go when we were chatting on Skype one day. I was pretty stunned to be honest. I couldn’t believe they were inviting me at first as I’m not a creator but Steven explained that someone had dropped out and so they were casting their net wider than just creators. So whoever couldn’t make it, thank you xD
Message? What message? Lies I tells ya! A swift banana nun-chuck to the head, and there I was in Sheffield, Rail by my side, favourite fruit in hand. Reaction: terrified. A simple valley boy, set loose in a Little Big City, (see what I dids there) no good could come of this.

Before the fun could really start, we all had to actually get to Sheffield. Statik and I headed up by train on the Friday, and at the time I was only aware of a few of the people who’d be coming to the Jam. I spent most of the journey checking Twitter for clues, and finding… Not very much. Turns out, when Sony tell us to stay quiet about something, and the dark cloud of disapproval threatens above our heads, we can all actually be pretty darned sneaky.

At Sheffield train station, we walked outside and began to misinform another couple on the whereabouts of a taxi. After walking down the road a little way with them, we did a 180 and walked back to the station, before finding the taxis neatly parked up… in the other direction. Our apologies to you, mystery couple, we hope you found what you were looking for! At the hotel, I scanned the bar while checking in, looking for a familiar face. Lo and behold, there’s Steven’s warm smile greeting us. After getting settled, we sat at the bar with Moley, retrogamer7, Deka and Steven, before finally turning in at 1am.

I only live about one and half hours away so it was a quick train journey, still with a big smile.
7 hours travelling by trains and two 87 year old ladies showed me their holiday photos for two hours. I wished I hadn’t forgotten my headphones...
The journey was fine (well, as far as driving up the M1 can ever be said to be fine) but I got pretty nervous the closer I got to Sheffield. This was not helped by hitting massive road works just outside Sheffield. I was sitting there in a traffic jam worrying about arriving late and asking myself why I had EVER thought that driving to the Jam was a good idea, lol.
My journey was fine really. No delays on the trains or anything. The only issue was that I didn’t really get much time to buy food so I had half a tube of Pringles for dinner.

On the final train (2 and a half hours… I had the pleasure of meeting a genius. He had a couple of entrepreneurial ideas including mind mapping software and making the Facebook timeline sideways. (I hope he doesn’t read this. He said that if I say too much he would have to kill me…
Long. Not much leg room. But there was beer. Lots of beer. And a chicken and stuffing sandwich, with some kind of sauce on it. Maybe it was beef. A chicken sort of beef.
We clambered aboard our second train at Bristol parkway, and had the privilege of hearing the following conversation of two young ladies, who were sitting just behind us.
“Remember that weekend?” said the first girl.
There was a pause. “Which one, I don’t remember?” said the second girl.
“The weekend I was abducted by aliens.” Replied the first girl.
“Oh yeah I remember now.” Said the second.
… True story.
I was stuck next to an ill guy where he was coughing and spluttering! ;_;! I did see RtooDee2 though but I didn't know It was him until he popped up in the premier inn lobby XDD!
About half way to Sheffield a grumpy-looking bloke, apparently incapable of smiling, slouched down in the seat next to me and opened-up his laptop. As he logged-in I happened to glance over and notice that his Windows profile image was of Sackboy. As he furiously typed away at some complicated-looking command-line window, I was thinking about asking him whether he was heading to the same place as me, but the unfriendly glare on his face put me off. Fortunately, he wasn't a Jammer - everyone there was much friendlier than that!
I got to the train station early to pick up my tickets and the machine didn't work, there was a booth open, so no drama i thought. After finally getting my tickets and looking at them i realised they didn't match up with the planned route i had received from Steven. The unhelpful guy behind the desk told me to just jump on any train going north. Luckily I ignored his advice.

I finally got to Birmingham, and through the powers of telepathy i knew there was a good chance i would bump into one R2D2. I was so excited to finally meet a real life droid. I poked my head around the platform expecting to see him standing there, eagerly waiting for his train. you can imagine my disappointment when all i saw was people, not a droid in sight! I tried not to let it show on my face...
Tom (TheNotorious187) and I had met up at Birmingham station early on because we knew we were on the same train. I was a little nervous before we met just incase he would be disappointed I wasn't an actual droid. Felt like i was going on a blind date with all the sweating i did. We chatted on the train and I drank a couple of beers trying to get drunk. For the record he didn't seem disappointed, so that made me Beep Bop with a happy whistle all the way to Sheffield.
I woke up at 5.00 (Friday) in the morning. My father drove me to the airport in Berlin. 2 hours flight to Manchester and then 1 hour and some minutes with the train to Sheffield. At last with a taxi to the hotel. It was a hard day with MANY things to do! But I mastered it It was my first trip alone with parents and I loved it!

If you’ve never met friends from the Internet in the real world… It’s quite a difficult situation to explain. At 12 noon on Saturday, myself, Statik, retrogamer, Deka and Moley all gathered with Steven in the reception of the hotel, awaiting the arrival of the rest of the Jammers. As each person walked through the door, I found myself watching them intently. Who’s this guy? Steven had told us who was left to arrive, and I found myself comparing every person who walked through the door with the only visual reference I had to their names, namely, their LBP avatars.

This is probably not a highly recommended method of recognising people, as it turns out, we don’t really look like Sackpeople in real life. Pity, that. As a few people wandered over towards us, I found myself getting more and more excited.

“Hi! You’re Chimpanzee?”
“Yes, and you…?”
“Ria.”
“Oh hi!”

And at this point I have to apologize for the many people I probably freaked out by hugging them rather than shaking their offered hands. I blame the atmosphere.

It was surreal meeting everyone for the first time in person. It's not every day you are sat in a room full of all these talented creators you respect. I'm used to sitting in my front room creating on my own. No one i know in real life gets, or understands LBP, so yeah, very surreal. lol
I’ve been PSN friends with scarybiscuit for some time now and meeting him was very jarring for me. For some reason (I don’t know why) I thought he was a dutch man from Holland but it turned out he was actually a nice man from Hull. It wasn’t the first mistake I made that weekend, just ask Tom. Good to finally meet up with Steven, Shropshirelass and Rialrees too.
I'd been to one LBP Jam before (for the PS Move kit) and again I felt a little worried that, not being a Creator, everyone else would wonder what the hell I was doing there. Fortunately, if anyone did feel that way, they didn't let-on and were extremely welcoming.
I had already met a few people at some events I have been to before, so it was good seeing all of them again. It was great putting a face to all the people I have been talking to online for the past 6 years! There wasn’t any awkwardness or anything as everyone has so much in common! I love our community. <3
I knew no one in real life before the event. I was a little nervous before I met anyone but when I did meet people I wasn't nervous at all. I was more excited to be honest.
When I walked into the premier inn, I saw Chimpanzee pop up behind me, Yet again I didn't know it was him! I saw him run towards the elevator and I quickly held the door open for him! We stood awkwardly together in the elevator and I whipped out my LBP3 Gamejam Info I printed out! Chimpanzee quickly saw it and was like You going to the gamejam? I was like :o Yes! And who are you? He then bellowed I am Chimpanzee and whipped his hand out for me to shake! I stood there for a second in shock and was like ! And shook his hand! We then walked to the lobby and Steveni, Rialrees and a guy who I soon became friends with who I thought was James from sumo digital! I was like :O Do I say hey or what! I stood there quietly and saw that guy I saw on the train who it turned out was RtooDee2. Anyways more and more people arrived and I slowly disappeared to the loo just to calm myself down after being overwhelmed by people..
I haven't seen anyone before the meeting, just tweeted with some people like StevenI. I was so nervous. I hadn't slept the day before. But then it was very cool to meet all people!
It was very strange at first I was very nervous as I was really scared as I thought maybe I wouldn’t know anyone as I only create on the vita, but then I saw StevenI and then the most strangest of things I heard two peoples PSN name SpaceMonkey187 and R2ooD2 and we chat all the time, yet we all had kept the gamejam so quiet and never told anybody so all the nerves went away
I wasn’t sure who else was going to be there but I knew that Ria had been invited and was very keen to meet her after years of spotlighting and chatting and downright plotting together. When I arrived at the hotel I spotted some people sitting in the lobby and recognised Ria’s long red hair straightaway. I waved and she smiled back but later told me she had no idea who I was, as she was expecting me to look like my old LBP avatar...
I was sooo nervicited! I wanted to jump up and down and yell yay, yay! But I also wanted to curl up in a teeny tiny ball and hide at the same time. Ah, ponies.
Uh, what was the question again? Ponies?
I was nervous, and quiet. I kept imagining all the attendees in their threads, a bunch of sackboys running around the place in their avatar costumes. It made me think… I wonder if they were a bit disappointed with how I turned out, compared to my sexy lady avatar.

When we all reached the venue, we were greeted by the sight of a room filled with PS4’s, and the sound of an undeniable LittleBigPlanet vibe in the air. I got there last, along with Steven, Lass, Chimp and Statik, and headed over to the corner, close to the balcony, hoping that this might be a good position to avoid the cameramen lurking on the other side of the room. (It wasn’t.)

I immediately opened up the game and got started on story mode. As if reading my mind, Steven pops around and hands me a form. “You know the drill!” He smiled, and sure enough I did. Hello, Mr. NDA form, it’s been a while. After signing to agree I wouldn’t be naughty, I settled back and got all excited at every little detail I noticed in the game. (No, I can’t, I’m sorry, I signed, see!) I will say this: It took all my strength, and the added pressure of being expected to create something, to drag myself away from Story mode. It was nostalgia, awe, and amazement all wrapped into one.

The build we were initially given gave us access to the first world of LBP3's story mode so I dove right into that. It was spectacular!
I started the first level of the story and played it, then I played all other levels.
I got there a bit sooner than most so I started powering through the story. I think we were only supposed to play through the first part but I just kept going a little bit! The story is awesome, but eventually I had to stop and attempt to actually make something. I got to work with the new climbing materials and made a little platformy thing that eventually got deleted into the imagisphere due to general lack of goodness.
Sat down, took a deep breath, checked my watch, and pinched myself. Then started playing the story mode.
I skipped merrily to a PS4 that was halfway from a balcony and not too close but close enough from the exit of the Jam room! *sheldon moment, but one does not create if uncomfortable* Dino (gevurah22) laughed and said ' That's the spirit!' Anyways I was able to start immediately and I jumped into the first part of the story, Just to get a feel for LBP3 and see what sumo digital had done !
As soon as we were shown to our PS4s I jumped straight into story mode and just loved it; it was funny and engaging and altogether wonderful. I stopped feeling nervous and thinking I shouldn’t be there and began to have a great time.
I just remember jumping right into create mode, checking out the new tools as everyone else started playing story mode. It just felt natural for me to do this because it felt like i was at home.
the first thing i did was play through a few of the story mode levels, after a while i thought it was time to get into create mode. it was about this time that we all realised that we would have about 5 materials and no tools to work with. you could feel a wave of panic go through the room.
First thing I did was figure out how to turn the TV on. (Mine had turned off). Then I held the controller for a few moments and thought… I’ve forgotten how to use this! Then when I figured everything out and LBP3 loaded, the game started up and deafened me, so I hunted for the volume control on the TV. (It was on the opposite side to the one I was looking on)
I played about in story mode for a while (which is very good by the way!) Then… I put a block of cardboard down, deleted it, made a wheel, deleted it, put a block of sticker panel down, and then made a motorbike out of a clothes hanger and a skull.
Later on, I left my PS4, sat next to Rail, and recreated said bike…. With sparks.
I smiled the biggest smile ever. Because I was part of Lbp history

Seems like selfies were the order of the day for many of us in the morning! From left to right: Sarah, Deka1357, Moley, Swoop, rialrees

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/alwayswatching_zpsecadb73b.png

I badly wanted to walk around and meet everyone I hadn’t had the chance to speak to yet, but suddenly a camera guy’s stood next to me, and I’m staring at my screen doing my best to avoid his gaze. See, the whole event was being filmed and photographed. It helped that the crew were incredibly friendly and warm, but the sight of a mahoosive lens is always enough to make me start pulling silly faces. I guess I thought this might make them go away and find someone more normal to shoot… I guess I’m an idiot, and when the video does eventually come out, I’ll be hiding in that corner over there thankyouverybig.

There were camera men there? Ha Ha I joke of course. It was pretty odd having your picture taken while creating, but once I adopted my pose of staring at my TV monitor while frowning they seem to leave me alone. Come to think about it, everyone left me alone.
They were fine! They weren’t intrusive or anything which was nice. The interview was a bit odd as we had to keep repeating things and I had no idea what I had said the first time! I wasn’t nervous or anything. I guess it is because I have put myself out there so much on youtube already. There can’t be many stupid things left for me to say!
For the most part, I didn't notice them. A couple of photos of me appeared on Twitter and I was trying to figure out when they were taken.
Being filmed while creating was A little nerve wracking for a few minutes but then I was fine and relaxed and forgot about them to be honest.
I felt as if they were going to jump on me and eat me alive like some sort of zombie XD! I can imagine them saying OH HAI ! I'M GOING TO GETCHA!
My reaction can be best summed up by the sound the villagers make in Minecraft.
Huuurrrrmmm. *Suspicious FACE*
Oh how I prayed for an Enderman to come along and zap me.
To be really honest after a while I drifted into my create mode and the rest of the world came a blur, there is so many new tools and so much you can do you kind of forget everything else, until the interviews started which I don’t think anyone really liked , but the film crew were so friendly it was like chatting to a friend.
Sometimes it was very crazy to be filmed. He was behind me and filmed me while I was playing a level. But it was also very cool. I liked it that StevenI did the interview with me. But it was hard to understand him
Yep, those cameramen were not easy to avoid but I did my best, generally skulking and trying to look as if I wasn’t there. I did manage to escape the interview but although everyone else said how nervous they were about being on camera, the actual interviews all sounded great to me.
To be fair the camera crew were all really nice and friendly, but i have to be honest that was the worst part of the weekend for me. I didn't mind them recording while i was playing because i could just focus on the screen, but the interviews were horrific. when i tried to answer a question i would instantly forget what the question was in the first place. I only hope that it was so bad that they can only use a 3 second clip.

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/theheatison_zpsf20841db.png

A few hours into the day, and everyone seemed to become more and more quiet. A look of concentration came over us all, as we scrambled for ideas on what we’d create. At first I had no idea, having been to the Vita jam previously and being faced with a create brief, I was expecting the devs to give us some idea of what they were looking for. So when the answer was “anything you want!” I screamed inwardly at myself for not planning anything out.

Then I opened create mode and realised we had three materials and ten objects to create with. This might be a slight over-exaggeration, but essentially we were faced with a choice - spend time going through story mode to collect more assets, or make do with what you’ve got. I found a rather creepy rabbit, which I was strangely drawn to. Jackofcourse came along and decided to turn the creep factor up to a hundred, and I had to keep the little guy in my level for the rest of the day to keep my spirits up and make me giggle.

Truth be told, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to make anything groundbreaking, I’ve never been a particularly groundbreaking creator! So I never felt any real pressure, I just settled down to having some fun, giving feedback to the devs where I could, and making a level with Swoop, as an excuse to practice playing with his controls some more.

I hadn't planned to build anything at all. I thought I would just speak to the other creators and gawk in amazement at what they were doing... which I did... but I also decided that I would have a go at creating something myself. I teamed-up with Jack (Sackinima) to create a localised water demonstration. We realised that with the new Character Animation Tweaker and cool animated materials, even we would be able to create something fairly impressive.
I knew I wanted to try and do something very different and had tried to make sure I could do the camera glitch (3D) in the beta and had a idea about a 3D platformer, but everything else was a on the day thing, as it had to be based on the materials, objects and stickers available.
I had 7 ideas mapped out in my head knowing it couldn't be a huge project due to time restrictions. I choose my waterfall survival purely based on showing off the new characters and being able to finish the project My levels normally take months to make
Me and Andrew both struggle with create mode compared to the other people invited along so we teamed up to try and make something. We started by looking through a load of new stuff and we found some interesting materials that you can make look like water. That then gave us the idea of trying to add logic to it to make localised water that you can swim in!
We saw Steve and his big guns swanning around so we called him over to help us out. He set up all of the logic to make it look like Sackboy was swimming and left us to do the rest. This was a bad idea. Within minutes we were in the debug menu messing with something we probably shouldn’t and crashed the game! Obviously, as the rookies we are we hadn’t saved and to make matters worse, Steve had gone home!
We despaired for about half an hour and then said, “Stuff it!” or something to that effect and tried to do it ourselves. We saw the general layout that was there before and just copied what we could from memory, which wasn’t much. Amazingly we got it working pretty quickly including making it just work in the water, adding a splash and even sound effects!
I had a bit of notice that i would be coming up so had some time to try and come up with a few ideas. This all went out the window though when i had to try and make something with no tools. thus cardboard land was born. Cardboard land consisted of a few platforms on pistons and not much else. After about 5 hours this is all i had to show for myself. Around about 6 o'clock the camera crew went home for the day, our ps4's got an upgraded version of the game and the free bar opened up...
Going back into create mode now was like the scene in Pulp Fiction when they open up the briefcase. it was game on!!
Well I had messed around before hand and thought ooo a 3D shooter would be cool ! But as I was making it I remember playing entwined on my PSVITA! What a game, As @SarahWellock84 would agree because we had a big discussion about the vita and games we have played! And well I thought You know what, I'm going to try and make my boring 3D shooter Into an entwined/shooter remake!
‘Plan’ is such a broad word… I just made it up, all the things that come together in my tiny little brain. And a bike was born. And a glowing light came down. It’s alive!
To be honest, I just drew a blank – but on the upside, I’ve thought of loads of ideas since! A few minutes after the event finished, in fact. Funnily enough, most of those ideas included my bike. Stupid brain!
I didn't plan anything before the event. I just wanted to get surprised with everything new. I played a lot story levels and later, some hours before the end of the meeting I started creating a minigame but didn't finished it because of the time.
Well all I knew that I was going to make a platformer which I’m most comfortable with. No plans or ideas, just make it up as i go along ect. I can take me up to 2 months to build one so i wasn't expecting to get anything over 1 minute of gameplay really.

Lass, L1GhTmArE, Holly and SteveBigGuns get competitive.

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/ingoodcompany_zpsf5c51e76.png

As daytime turned to dusk, more of the Sumo devs started to arrive to have a chat and see what we were getting up to. I have to apologise profusely if I miss anyone out, but over the course of the first day we were met by Morgana, Jaeyden, gevurah22, jackofcourse, L1GhTmArE, SteveBigGuns, DaaMonkey, fluxlasers, and of course many devs who came to LBP from outside the LBP community. Getting to chat face-to face with these guys about the awesome work they’d been putting in to the game was a real treat, and probably a highlight for many of us, but definitely my biggest ‘woah’ moment.

I spent a great part of the evening deeply engrossed in discussion with Jaeyden and DaaMonkey, and all the way through much of our conversation, I just had to keep on pinching myself. Yes, Ria, this is real. Stop drooling and gibbering like an idiot.

It was pretty amazing to have the guys sat next to you who have built this game watching you build your level, some thing’s they said went over my head but some of the tips I will be using in the future, they were all great and very humble no egos at all, there just a bunch of guys who love their jobs and want to help.
I was honoured to meet all the people involved and pleasantly surprised they were all down to earth and passionate towards Lbp. They all made me feel welcome just an amazing group of people
These guys (and girl) are all awesome! They were helping us out throughout the day, improving our levels in mere seconds by tweaking the lighting, adding in little decorations and all sorts. They are the true masters!
I nearly managed to go the full 24 hours without being assaulted by any of them (A new record!) but in the dying moments I got body slammed by gevurah on the beanbags. Good times.
I'd met a few of they guys and gals at the Move Jam, just before they were hired. It was great catching up with Jaeyden, Morgana, Jackofcouse and SteveBigGuns. I also got to meet Gevurah, DaaMonkey and a few other people for the first time. Everyone was so friendly and eager to help. What struck me is how much everyone there cares about LittleBigPlanet. After a few drinks we had some quite emotional discussions about the game and what they're trying to achieve - it's clear that LBP is in safe hands.
It was like WOW!!! They all played LBP before and now they’re making LBP3. It was so cool that the community get invited to this.
Getting to meet all the guys from Sumo was definitely a highlight for me. Chatting to DaaMonkey and Lightmare about LBP over a beer was really cool and something i won't forget in a long time. The thing that really hit me was how enthusiastic they all were about LBP3, I don't know who was more excited? us or them.
Woo, meeting everyone was amazing. Steve and dem BIG guns was so cool. I think Retrogamer7 got his autograph and then Lightmare walks in! Don’t know I managed to stop myself from screaming. Jackofcourse was ofcourse very helpful ofcourse and his name is Jack. I thought Jaeyden was Chimpanzee, like I said earlier I made many mistakes. Infact ALL the staff were amazing and friendly. Sarah was as lively as I expected as she cheerleaded us into the wee small hours.
When I first met morgana I was like :O the accent is amazing! You could tell she was one amazing creative person! I also met Gevurah he was amazing! Funny happy etc but for some reason I felt like he was a Judgement Rabbit! I felt as if he was like watching my every move! I loved when he dive bombed onto sackinima ! He also drove me to the train station in his epicly small car which I fell out of due to me being so big XD! I also saw stevebigguns who by the way has MASSIVE GUNS! He was so hench! I didn't get to talk to him but whenever I saw him I gave him a smile. When the event came to the end I also met L1GhtMare who gave me a great hand shake, smiled widely and said What an epic level! I Loved it, that gave me a glowy feeling inside!
All the Devs were so friendly, they were so happy to explain everything about the game in great depth – down to the inner workings and possibilities of the programming… which I just … Well I just don’t understand, really. I think the nicest moment was when Lightmare came across and instantly said “You must be radio statik!” Which was… odd. As I gazed at him from across my little desk, I thought: Who is this man, how does he know me, why am I here? What day is it? Sumo, who are they? I see no wrestling!
At that point, I snapped back to reality, and shook his hand and said thank you. It was pretty awesome.
Actually one of the highlights of the weekend for me was meeting the Sumo people and the Community managers. I was particularly looking forward to meeting Morgana as I liaise with her every fortnight about getting the LBPC Spotlight published and of course she’s a legend on LBPC. She was just as I had imagined: relaxed, funny and charming. In fact Steven and all the Sumo devs were awesome - friendly, down to earth and brimming with passion for the game.

Moley, Chimpanzee and fluxlasers in the zone

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/streetllightpeople_zpsd6286588.png

With the awesome atmosphere, the good company, and the lilting sound effects filling the room, it was hard to call it a night. But when 4 am dragged around, I felt myself wearing thin. I’m too old for this… stuff, and I needed a few hours’ sleep. So I regrettably pulled myself away from the PS4, bid my farewells and headed down to catch a taxi back to the hotel for a while.

I knew I’d regret it, as previous experience taught me that the wee hours of the morning is where things really get interesting in a GameJam. But most of us were far more concerned with being able to survive the next morning, unlike some people...

I went right through the night with one power-nap on a beanbag pinched from glitchfish, staying awake for that long and pretty much not stopping was not a task it was pure heaven having a chance to play LBP3 for that long was amazing and something I would do again in a heart beat. The last few of us wake were told to go to the hotel and freshen up (7AM). Waiting for a taxi while a drunk shouted at us was fun... Then walking trying to find the Hotel when the taxi didn’t turn up was great! Managed to have a great chat with RTooD2. Then shower, explain to the receptionist that the room was good, even though I spent about 30mins in it.
I got about 6 hours sleep across 3 days. I was too excited to sleep and my mind wouldn't shut down. I coped fine considering I'm normally like a Bear with a bad head without sleep. Two things that make me irritable are lack of food or sleep. Other than that, I'm lovely
Where my level was concerned I spent an hour wiring and creating the points and health system of my H.U.D! and just trying to make waves of the onslaught of enemies and teardrop portals the ships had to fly through. Steveni at 7:30 in the morning (yes he stayed awake also, the amazing guy!) said “Well it's time for you to go back to your hotels and get freshened up for the interviews!” We had a shower but then I thought I Have a room, Gonna lie in the bed! Unfortunately I sat there in bed and dozed off accidentally, woke up 5 seconds later, tweeted I was going to sleep and died XD!
I spent the night drinking beer and eating porkpies while creating. When i found myself getting tired and seeing things at 4am (that big toggle on the wall just waved at me!) i just plugged in my headphones and turned the volume up. Slipknot and Rage against the machine helped me through the tough times.
I lasted until 2'ish. by that time i had hit the wall and need to get some sleep.
After failing to get a taxi, running the gauntlet of kicking out time in Sheffield city center and a room card that wouldn't work i got to sleep about half 3.
I spent the evening playing story mode with Holly (a 2D artist from Sumo) and at various points we were joined by Steve Big Guns, L1ghtmare, Jackofcourse and Gevurah. I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Holly told me she acted as Steve’s noob tester for levels and when it came to the final story boss Steve and L1ghtmare definitely outclassed the pair of us. I had a blast playing and chatting with them all but gave up at around 12.30 and went back to the hotel to sleep. Lightweight, I know xD
I think that my first indication that it was getting a tad on the late side was when I started to have visions of rabbits coming from the walls. One popped up from the ground and said “statik, go to bed”. But I pushed on till 4am… ish. So I finished my bike... Then I looked deep into Rail’s eyes and said: “Uuuuuuuuuuuuuurggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhtaxi .”
I got to the hotel at 2.00am and slept till 6.00am. Then I got back and was with StevenI alone and heard/watched Lightmare and Jaeyden snoring and sleeping! It was so funny! Well, StevenI asked me if I wanted to get some sleep at the hotel so I did it because getting home on the next day without any sleep would be so crazy!
What can I say? I’m a trooper! I kept going through the whole thing and didn’t leave til Steven told us we all stank and had to go back to the hotel to freshen up. I think I coped by just chatting to everyone and marvelling at their creations. Luckily I had the following Monday off so there was plenty of time to rest then!
I don't know if I'm proud to say this but I'm one of the few that made it through the whole night, only calling in at the hotel for a much-needed shower early on Sunday morning.

So errr. when did this happen???

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/stagefright_zpsdb4b7b69.png

Coming back the following morning, it was fun to look around and guess who had stayed through the night. Steven stalked the room, the most obvious (and yet still insanely cheerful) all-nighter of the group. Poor guy.

Almost the moment I got back to my console and turned it all back on, an announcement was made. “Okay guys, we’re going to be starting interviews soon…”

And I froze. Interviews? But… but… we did those yesterday! The tiny nugget of information that I’d buried at the back of my brain came back to haunt me. Yes, they did say there were going to do a follow up… Oh my. Next thing you know I’m mic-ed up and stood in front of a stage light brighter than a supernova, trying to get past the dry feeling in my mouth and spit some words out… Preferably English.

I dread to see the results of that interview… I can only console myself in the knowledge that I didn’t have to call myself a ‘super creator’ or somesuch buzzwordy title. Thank you Sony! I just wouldn't have been able to say it without doubling over in laughter. After the interviews (which some jammers managed to hide from, sneaky blighters!), we were asked to present our levels… also on camera. I knew that was coming… Deep breath.

Sunday morning was quieter. Over a breakfast of bacon rolls (and avoiding the pork pies left from the night before xD) I caught up with the events of the night and wished I hadn’t left so early. Then everyone got on with finishing their levels and I wandered around seeing all the very different and awesome things people had created in such a short time. It was a real privilege chatting to spacemonkey, retrogamer7, RtooDee2, scarybiscuit and Ria about their levels and I loved watching everyone doing their presentations on camera and seeing how supportive and funny (not to say riotous) the audience of Sumo devs and gamejammers was.
The interviews were the only downside for me. The presentation was actually quite fun (I did mine first to get it out the way) I have no idea how it looked on camera but I was enjoying it. Proud of it? Well I guess its ok for the short time I spent on it, I just wished there was more to show. I love the fact that I had no sound effects in my level so i just asked everyone to make some effect noises as i played through it. And they did lol!!!! That was cool.
I left Andrew to do all the presenting with me just chipping in every now and again. I was concerned that our level was just going to be so bad compared to everyone else’s, but for us it had some great features. Andrew presented it really well so I think we managed to get away with it!
The on-camera interview was pretty scary. I'm a pretty quiet person and I've only just gotten used to talking in my videos, so I wasn't really ready to put my ugly mug on camera too! Luckily the camera crew were very friendly and patient with me! There wasn't much to our localised water demo but Jack left me to do the presentation. Everyone clapped politely when I was done so I suppose our level wasn't too much of a disappointment.
I think I was the only person that had a fully functional game that was finished? I was a little nervous because I made a survival level and could have embarrassed myself by dying right away. Proud not sure but happy. Reason being as I mentioned before I normally make much bigger more complex levels. I was however very proud of the eyes that was watching me.
The next morning it was interview time again. luckily me and Stu managed to avoid this second round by hiding out on the balcony until they packed up. it was great to have a good chat and a laugh with him. we would poke our heads in and see them still recording and think, nope, not time to go back in just yet. When it came time to show of my 'level' i was quite nervous. I think i mumbled something about lighting and platforms and pistons. lol.
The presentations were the bit everyone seemed nervous about, but everyones levels looked amazing when you think it only took 24hours, I was happy with my level (frosty the axe snowman) and it showed a few new things what LBP3 could do if I had more time it could have been so much more, but its given some great ideas to use in the future. I was interviewed again which when you’re suffering from lack of sleep makes you forget your psn name and you develop the ability to not stop talking.
Well the cameramen were extremely friendly, with who I made laugh a number of times! When I had to present my work on the camera I sat there like oh god time to show what I have done! I liked making people look in awe going - Wow what is this amazing shtuff! XD I also added a couple sounds which made people giggle! When I had to show it in create mode I was like O_O what do I show first. there was a lot to show but I didn't know what most of it did, at that point I was like when it works I don't care what it looks like!
At first, while I stood there and watched one after one presenting their well made work, I thought to myself. “Self: well done. Your achievement can be summed up in one word: Bike. And I also thought, well there’s not much I can say about bike, the floor moves, and that’s not much of a presentation. So as creator after creator went by, displaying their meisterworks. I thought phew! Dodged a bullet there! That’s until Rail... darling Rail, finished her presentation, and then announced – Statik’s got a bike, he’d love to show it! Put a mic on him, a camera in his face, he’d love that!” So they did. And statik sat there, controller in hand, eyes pinned on him. What is this work, what is this brilliance he’ll come out with? What has escaped from his mind and is presenting itself as a visual feast on LBP? There was none, said static, there is only one thing we’re going to see here, and that one thing, that one thing we’re waiting for is a bike! With a sidecar. And they all thought: Nice... I assume.

Left: I don’t think SteveBigGuns ever has a problem with cameras… Right: scarybiscuit shows off Frosty the Axe-wielding snowman to gevurah22 and jackofcourse

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/itsallovernow_zps56e02283.png

The levels were all shown, the cameramen were packing up, and it was becoming apparent that our time here was drawing to a close. As we all parted ways, many of us said the same thing: “I’d love to do this again soon.”

That pretty much sums it up. We’d all love to do this again. And again… and again...

After 10.00am I left the Jam. I was very sad and happy at the same time. I had a good experience there. It was very nice to meet everyone. Especially StevenI. I will remember you all. Will never forget this awesome meeting.
I stuck around til the very end and helped tidy up a bit so Steven, Sarah and the Sumo gang (Sounds like a terrible 70’s band) didn’t have to do it all themselves. Gevurah gave me and Glitchfish a lift to the station and we both got on our trains with seconds to spare!
It is hard to think of just one thing that stands out, but the presentations were all fantastic and it was great seeing what people can come up with in just 24 hours!
I left along with Tom, Retrogamer 7 and the guy from Hull-not-Holland about 2.30pm as Sumo James was nice enough to give us a lift to the train station. Best thing? God there is too much to mention here I just know I’ll leave something out. Porkpies were nice and...Oh Glitchfish and his speed create powers with the most mind melting logic ever!! Meeting my main men Tom and Iain aka Not so Scarybiscuit, playing all the later story levels and realizing that its even more awesome than I expected, meeting my one fan Shropshirelass who was so cool. Running away from cameramen looking to do interviews, talking with Sumo staff, watching people create and a demented snowman with an axe chopping up crabs. You don’t forget that in a hurry!
The moment I left the venue the whole event became very blurry. When I got on the train I suddenly realised that I hadn't slept in about 33 hours and that I had to go to work the next day. I think what I'll remember most is the presentations at the end and seeing what everyone was able to achieve in such a short time. I'll also remember Sarah constantly teasing Jack and I about how we apparently act like an old married couple. I don't see it, myself. . .
Once the presentation finished I rushed off to catch my train a quick round a good byes then gone, its all a bit of a dream, but I will always remember that amazing weekend and the best thing was meeting other like-minded creators. The most strangest thing was coming home looking on the internet and finding frosty a 10-second clip of my level had had over 10,000 views.
I left when it was over and felt sad it had ended . Best moment was obviously playing my level and having all those amazing creators sitting beside me trying to beat each other's score. It was like I was dreaming very surreal indeed. Something I'll never forget.
For me personally the best part of the weekend was getting to meet R2D2 and Scarybiscuit in person. Luckily we managed to grab a group of tables in the corner so we could create together. How cool is that! It still makes me smile just thinking about it.
Thankfully due to my train time I didn't leave right when most people left ! I just wondered about looking at the LBP3 jam being closed and my soul being ripped apart! I was like D: IT'S OVER D:! IT WAS SO QUICK D:! I felt awfully sad! to comfort myself XD I got a huge bowl of crisps which was left over from the breakfast and nommed them!
Anyways Me, Rialrees, Sackinima, Sarah, Steven, Gevurah and Statik sat around a table, reminiscing about the jam, talking about Judgement rabbits and Lions and other amazing things! It still feels like a dream but I think that brief moment with some awesome people was one of my most memorable experiences ever!
I left when the presentations were over and was sorry to go. I felt like I had made some friends at the jam and met people whose work I had admired for ages. My abiding memory will be of the people involved in LBP, both the creators and the game devs. This is a game which above all else lives and dies by its community and meeting so many people who feel passionately about the game was a real boost. I have so much hope for the future of the game after this meet up.
The atmosphere, I suppose, was the thing I’ll miss the most. No one was frightened to talk about the game – everyone knew what you were on about. In everyday life, you mentioned LBP to someone and have to explain it. It was nice to be LBP-ity around people, say what you wanted, and not be embarrassed about it. “Oh my, isn’t that a big circuit board?” So my fondest memory would be the people themselves. I can’t put it down to one moment, they were all so nice, so accommodating, very insane, which is nice. All good things. I suppose if I had to pick one moment, then that would be frosty the hatchet wielding snowman, because that was just priceless. Crab sticks anyone?

http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m489/psnrialrees/finalthoughts_zps3b779e39.png

LBP3 is going to be absolutely fantastic for the community. There is so much more that you can do here that just wasn’t possible before and it is so much easier to do things that would have taken so much before!

Just look at what we managed to do! As rookies we managed to take the new tools and make something that people have only thus far dreamed of doing. Imagine what the pros can make! All the new tools, characters and everything else packed into this game are going to help out the noobies and enthral the battle-scarred veterans of old!
It's gonna be the best LBP EVER!!! Well, we said it also in LBP2: You can create everything! But NOW you can create EVERYTHING you have ever dreamt of! It's so cool to see so many amazing new tools and features! I love them all!
Its definitely a gamechanger, the whole 16 layer idea will enable you to create anything, along with the many new tools and powerups. I expect to see the Pumpinator used quite a bit in platformers cause its just so much fun it should be illegal. Great job by Sumo. LOVE IT!
As far as game-changers go, it's hard to top logic and Sackbots that arrived with LBP 2, but I think LBP 3 might just do it. The whole 16-layer thing is huge and the new gameplay possibilities with the Animation Tweaker, questing, Live Stream Sensor and so much more... it's really exciting. I can't wait to see what the community do with it all.
No doubt, LBP3 will change everything. We all have an exciting few years a head watching the community pushing this game to the limit...
LBP3 is a gamechanger it has endless things you can do, you dream, you then can create it, its that simple more logic the spock would ever want, more materials, objects and stickers.
The tools which will be the biggest changer really depends of your style of creations. But here is my top five; 1. Broadcast Chip, 2. Animation Tweaker, 3. Ligthing Effects, 4.16 layers, 5. New Characters
Lbp3 surpassed my expectations. A must-buy in my opinion and I'm definitely joining the party I'm not worried what the community makes looking at the Lbp2 cool pages. I'm more interested what the top creators make and hopefully find the next prodigy along the way. The new tools are awesome and varied so create mode is a more powerful beast now thanks to Sumo Digital.
Well LBP3 really does give you the possibilities to make anything you want! I mean If I can make a 3D shooter/ entwined remake in 24 Hours! I think It really is a gamechanger! Personally I want someone to make a Co-op top down shooter or Magic adventure! Or perhaps a true horror game! The possibilities are now truly endless! ! I SERIOUSLY CANNOT WAIT!
My thoughts: Terrible. Rubbish. Waste of time. Can’t wait for LittleBigPlanet 5!

Nah. Of course, I think it’ll be hard to find someone from the community that really doesn’t like it – I suppose if you’re new to it, then you’re in an even better position. You have even more at your disposal. You didn’t have to live through the dark times, when logic was but a leaf on the breeze for most of us. Anyway, LBP3… err. Brilliant. The tools… oh my, so many tools. It’s hard to explain, it’ll just end up the mindless ramblings of a starstruck fanboy. Its going to be interesting to see people use all the different character animations, because you have so many movie-orientated creators. It so lends itself to cinematics – it’ll be awesome.

I’m not a creator so the whole game changers thing is difficult for me to judge. I did have a blast playing story mode though. The extra 16 layers made things a lot more interesting, as did all the new power ups. I had the feeling that we only just scraped the surface at the game jam and that people are going to do amazing things with the new tools. It was an inspiring 24 hours and I’m so excited now for November.

Roll on November!

On behalf of all my fellow jammers, I want to yet again extend a huge thank you to the team at Sumo Digital and Sony for an amazing weekend. We had an absolute blast getting to meet you and getting our hands on your amazing game!

And on my own behalf, thanks to all the guys for putting up with me poking them for answers, and I really do hope we get to meet up again. Till then!

Another fantastic write-up! So great to see more of a personal experience from each person at the jam. When I read about how some of my friends met I got excited and smiled. Most importantly, I am super happy to see everyone having fun.

Now we just need Steven, Sarah to post about their experiences!

We're working on a super-awesome video for you all!
The one that will be the result of all those nasty, nasty (yet very friendly) cameramen that were mentioned above.

We're at the Eurogamer Expo first this week though...
And then back to working on the video!

He certainly doesn't fit that image of your average "gamer nerd" stereotype does he? Definitely not what you'd associate with a game about making levels from sponge with cotton dolls, but I guess that's the magic of LBP.

Also, for some reason I always thought you were a bloke... like Des Lynam, or Des O'Connor.

It warmed my heart knowing that you and Shrop were finally meeting face to face. I don't know why but I've always felt like you were two long lost friends. I hope you remain bosom buddies like Anne Shirley and Diana from Anne of Green Gables..... 0_0 err, I of course mean something more manly like um, um Rocky and Apollo! Yeah, that's it, like Rocky and Apollo. Whew! saved my rep with that one.
So happy for you guys that you were able to do this. I'm very happy that everyone had a good time. So very jealous too. Not so much for being in the jam, but for being able to meet one another. I would value that more.

Great read! Thanks for taking the time to write it up. Can't wait for the game to come out, finally a good reason to buy a PS4! Really cool to see photos of some LBP heavyweights. You know, one time I saw Steve Big Guns lift a HUGE piece of dark matter right up over his head like it was nothing. True story.2014-09-25 00:42:00

This brings back memories of the LBP2 gamejam... er I mean this brings back memories of me reading about the LBP2 gamejam. lol Sounds like an amazing experience. I must say it's odd that they would invite you guys to try out all the new tools and then not have the new tools readily available, but I see they made up for it by having bacon rolls. Wait what exactly is a bacon roll? Did you guys get to take home any souvenirs?2014-09-25 04:01:00

All of you were very lucky people to try out the next evolution in Play, Create and Share lineup and of course I love Steve and his big guns.2014-09-25 04:26:00

I of course mean something more manly like um, um Rocky and Apollo! Yeah, that's it, like Rocky and Apollo. Whew! saved my rep with that one.

I'm not overly familiar with the Rocky "lore"..... but didn't these two used to punch the crap out of one anther before being buddies?

Birmingham station

As someone who spends half his life at various stations around Birmingham, I wish it was that simple

I went one of the Birmingham stations when seeing Peter Kay (like the stereotypical Boltonian I am). I think it was the big main one, it's a flipping nightmare!2014-09-25 12:03:00
