A great idea. A fantastic idea. I think they're doing it already though. The "Everything we know so far" thread mentioned an opacity tweaker which might just be what you're talking about.2014-09-17 19:06:00

LBP3 will have a Opacity Tweaker, which will allow you to change how visible a material is. With a bit of logic you could easily make an object that disappears or reappears when its near something or based on an event2014-09-17 23:48:00

Well we've already got that tool in LBP3, and it's called an Opacity/Transparency Tweaker. One of the two.

So... isn't that the emitter?

The emitter does more than make an object invisible. It determines an objects existence as a physical presence as well. When something is emitted, it's not just becoming visible, it's being created.

But doesn't it accomplish the same thing, making an object appear?

It can make objects appear, but it can't make objects disappear without destroying them completely. Sometimes you want to have an object/material still physically present, just invisible. Plus, in making an object appear, it spawns a brand new object, resetting any persistent logic related to that object.
