Mario Kart 8

Archive: 6 posts

Still no Mario Kart 8 thread on here? Shame on y'all.

I've never made a general gaming thread before so this is gonna be a wild ride (get it?)!

I think I'm supposed to write an explanation of the game as if you've never heard of it before or something, but I think everyone knows what Mario Kart is so here's the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart_8). Just give it a read if 'ya need to. I'm gonna ramble on about DLC for a minute. Feel free to skip over this next part, 'cause I assume you probably want to.

There have been 3 DLC packs already announced for the game. One of them is free and has already released!

Mercedes Benz kart DLC:

Includes 3 new karts. Who cares, it's free, just get it. It's literally out right now. Yes it's shameless product placement. Yes it looks hilarious. Yes, I love it.

The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8:

Includes Link, Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach as playable characters, as well as 4 new vehicles (one of which being the Blue Falcon from F-Zero) and 8 new tracks. The new courses seem to include Mute City from F-Zero, Wario's Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii and a track based on Excitebike. This pack is available for $7.99!

Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8:

Includes Dry Bowser as well as Isabelle and a Villager from Animal Crossing New Leaf as playable characters, as well as 4 new (currently unrevealed) vehicles and 8 new tracks. The only new course I can make out from this pack is a new Animal Crossing-themed course. This pack is also available for $7.99!

If you pre-purchase both the DLC packs together in a bundle, it only costs $11.99, and you get some recoloured Yoshi and Shy Guy skins to race as. They're available to download as soon as you pre-order. I already use a yellow Yoshi!

I wouldn't mind adding some people to my Wii-U friend list to do some racing sometime. Does anyone here even have this game? Does anyone here even have a Wii-U?

Send me a friend request. My NNID is "KlawwTheClown" obviously. It's not like I go by 2 names or anything.

Not a fan of the overall roster, and some of the upcoming DLC choices to expand upon it (Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach) still sound pretty lame. I also don't really like what I've heard about the Battle Mode, but that could be fixed in the future, so there is that. Still, there's not a whole lot of variety between what modes there are.. hm. The land/air/sea transformation combined with anti-gravity usage seems great and the game itself does look very pretty, although the number of speed boosts added in seems way too crazy, plus I hear the anti-gravity usage kind of messes up the fun with motion-controlled gameplay (yes, some of us have dabbled with that).

When the game released, I heard that rubber-banding had been fixed and now all I hear is that it actually stinks still. The blue shell was definitely what drove (ha) me away from Mario Kart Wii as it pretty much sucked the fun out of replaying tracks on solo (because I had noone else to play with, oops) after a while and, well, it's nice that they have a solution for it, but it still seems sketchy. You have this one super-rare item that can totally knock out that blue shell, but it's still so rare that it will hardly show up at the right time to save you... yeah.

Hopefully the rubber-banding/blue shell issue is gone and the game can still remain very fun over time, I'm glad they'll be implementing additional (reasonably priced) content (tracks especially) to the mix, as that will definitely help keep things fresh. As for the blue shell, I really just think the "blue shell" concept could have stayed but forced you to dodge it a few times or something, or perhaps remain on the ground and hit other players it knocks into as well. I know Mario Kart is supposed to be a party game, but for what they tout as keeping people playing throughout the generation, I need a little strategy into the mix with things like that. Yet they seem happy to overcomplicate the speed-boosting portion of things to where I can't even imagine trying to go competitive (not to say it should be easy to go competitive). Other than that, the soundtrack sounds beautiful, and there are still a number of characters I'd love to race as.

There doesn't seem to be much added that would come off as totally new, which is sort of to be expected I guess from the eighth main installment in a series. Being able to edit videos and upload them to Youtube sounds great. I did hear though that there were a few kinks with that though but apparently Nintendo is working that out, good good. Too bad the system has something bleh in place in terms of actual capture recording, but hey, the video editing tool does seem cool at least.

Being able to play on the Gamepad sounds awesome, I really dig the concept behind Off-TV play. It's also nice that they're letting you see the track layout on the TV again in an update coming soon (or did it already come.. I don't know), as it would've just been a pain for me looking up and down and up and down.

With that said, matchmaking still sounds wonky not being able to choose your own tracks and instead just force you to go random based off people's picks (unless I'm wrong about that), plus other nitpicks like coins which sound like utterly useless powerups except for more miniscule speed boosts, and I guess it would've been nice to see a fresh new mode to spice things up again, especially with Battle Mode's mishaps. Yes, I sound extremely cynical, sorry.

The Wii U seems to have some fun games, but there just aren't many that actually "wow" me. With all that said, I'm sure it's still a hell of a lot of fun with some great personality, plus custom vehicles and paragliding probably add in a nice layer to it all.

The rubber banding is definitely still a problem when you're playing online in a worldwide lobby.

Case in point: Whatever happened to me here.

Yeah, the character roster sucks (although I have hopes for the rumoured Diddy Kong Racing 2) and so does battle mode.

I don't have too much of a problem with the blue shell, since they're pretty rare and half the time if you're in first you'll either be waaaay ahead of everybody or you'll be saving a super horn. I'm more frustrated about the lightning item that gets rid of everybody's weapons.

As a fan of Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing, I love the coins too.

The game does have a few problems, but it's just so much fun anyway. Especially the anti-gravity bits. They're awesome.

Oh dear, more reasons to dislike the lightning powerup. I actually kind of liked the "hot potato"-style Thunder Cloud powerup introduced in Mario Kart Wii, as it fit the party-style nature of the series and yet it also was a way to keep people wary of racers around them.

Not to make this thread all about bashing the game, of course. Those stages look beautiful, and I really want to test out the Boomerang powerup. :arg:

They missed the perfect opportunity to cram Ganondorf into a tiny cart. <:1
Just having him all hunched over, legs jettin' out with a serious look on his face, laughing evily *** he passes other racers in a tiny bug car.

Still, I wish I had a Wii U now.

...and that the Animal Crossing pack would release much, much sooner.
