Invisible Connectors
Archive: 9 posts
Currently you can make pistons and some other connectors invisible by setting their length to zero. I would like to see this add as an option in the tweak menu. A simple visible? yes/no just like many other objects have would be great. Seeing this for rods, elastic, string, bolts, etc would be really neat. | 2009-02-22 19:43:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
I'm not so sure about invisible rods, string and elastic. It could make things confusing, not knowing if something is glued to the background or help by an invisible string. For some other effects, like swinging ghosts or lamps, it could by useful. Perhaps you could change the look of all the connectors? Set individual ones to different themes. Rope could be changed to have a chain-like appearance, for example. | 2009-02-22 19:49:00 Author: LFF Posts: 434 |
I agree having invisible stuff would be overused and it'll be all confusing. | 2009-02-22 20:39:00 Author: olit123 Posts: 1341 |
The reason I suggested these is because I use a lot of invisible pistons to make flying objects in my current levels. I just think having it as an option, opposed to a glitch would be a nice change. Overuse might be a problem though as olit123 said. | 2009-02-22 20:41:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
I dunno, it's not really about whether stuff can be abused. Anything in LBP can be abused, really. If people do that, ignore their levels. Yet the very same thing could be used in a great way too. So if it would help some people make better levels, why not? | 2009-02-22 21:26:00 Author: LFF Posts: 434 |
I dunno, it's not really about whether stuff can be abused. Anything in LBP can be abused, really. If people do that, ignore their levels. Yet the very same thing could be used in a great way too. So if it would help some people make better levels, why not? What I do currently to hide connectors is to make a block move in the backmost thick layer. Then I make a thin layer that hides the block. I then attach the block with a rod to another block in the middle layer and glue the object I want that block. This lets you completely hide the movement mechanism (like the boss in my first level). Another cheat is you can get an invisible rod by using a piston, setting the minimum length to zero and the maximum length to the size you actually want. Then attach an inverted direction switch to it and it will stay fully extended. So these sorts of things can already be done but they need to be done in a complex way, which limits their use in levels. Making things invisible is really for looks, not difficulty. It would help people who make complex devices can have them appear 'clean' instead of having the technical stuff showing. That's what I use them for right now and it was the basis of the suggestion. That said, levels where it was used to trick players would annoy me but as LFF says, I just wouldn't play those levels if they were bad. | 2009-02-22 21:52:00 Author: dcf Posts: 468 |
Yeah, that would be nice .. because I don't always want my piston set to zero, yet I don't always want it showing. Wouldn't be confusing if it was visable in edit mode, but invisible in play mode (like wires). I'm confused though, on how it could be "over used" .. you usually don't see the moving parts in a game (like mario for example .. I can't seem to recall ever seen a piston moving the platforms around) | 2009-02-22 23:41:00 Author: FabbieSack Posts: 88 |
I'm not so sure about invisible rods, string and elastic. It could make things confusing, not knowing if something is glued to the background or help by an invisible string. For some other effects, like swinging ghosts or lamps, it could by useful. This can be easily resolved making the invisible rods, string or elastic visible only in the editor mode, with some small visual change, indicating that thing is 'invisible', like transparent aspect. | 2009-02-23 00:08:00 Author: Unknown User |
I definately agree with the ability to make ANY connection invisible. It's a pet peave of miine that if I use a bolt to spin something it is visible - If I want to make an animated character with a turning head I end up with bolts stuck in the middle of a face. It's far too difficult to find workarounds to hide connections when it should obviously be a tweak setting. In my final boss in Splat Invaders II it took a lot of additional work to make it float around. The design required no material behind the wall, but the piston controlling it couldn't be zero length because it needed to float above the floor. I finally figured it out, but it took some major engineering.... | 2009-02-23 14:13:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
