Hi, I have a lot of friends that have a PS4, and I dont have enought money to just go out and buy one. So can PS3 LBP3 and PS4 LBP3 play together? And if they cant, that would suck. But if someone wants yo buy me a PS4, that'll be great to lol. So yeah, can two systems play together?2014-09-01 18:01:00

It's not confirmed, but the changes already made seem to suggest that this might happen

again, it's just speculation, nothing official

It would be cool if Ps4 and ps3 can play together but doubt that will happen :/ because ps4 will have those touch pad games and ps3 won't I assume ps4 LBP is run on same engine as ps3 so might be a possibility 2014-09-01 19:16:00

I do not think it will be possible. I'm not a developer so I wouldn't know, but, it would be very difficult. I can think of several reasons why it wouldn't be possible:

[-] When your playing on a PS3, any friend playing on the PS4 is listed right at the bottom of your friends list, it doesn't even show you what game they're playing on.
[-] The PS3 has a limit of 100 friends, the PS4 = 2000. I joined the last create marathon and the host had more than 100 friends (due to having a PS4), It was very difficult to join them as they did not show up playing LBP2 in my game (It displayed them the same as if they were playing a PS4) and I did not show up on their game.
[-] Different Versions. I know the PS4 version has to be optimised for the PS3 for backwards compatibility but the PS4 has some different features (like the touch-pad and trailer recording). It might just work like DLC (like the move or cross-controller packs) but DLC is on your game whereas the new PS4-only features might not be programmed on the PS3 version.

Tl;dr - Don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen.
They've already put backwards compatibility on the levels and DLC which is a big enough achievement!

CounterStrike Global Offensive had you able to play PC to PS3, so I'm sure a small friend list barrier will be able to be patched fairly quickly

Hmm, well, it could be something more independent like separate friends list (inconvinient) or just how blacklight does it and has their own friends list (can display if people are playing the same game as you at least) its better then nothing, but if this were to happen, I'm sure in the long run they could patch it up, and make it work just like the PS3, and better

*Both are 32 bits (so they already dont require much extra programming to be compatible, it would work like a normal server)
*Touchpad could be a exclusive type deal, like how move levels were told that they use move (as to just expand for PS4 players only)
*and MIGHT not be programmed could be solved with a patch

That is why it might work, but any of these reasons could just be lazily discarded by Sumo Digital, and it might not happen

I mean CS:GO cross compatibility was taken out later, for various reasons, and other then that cross compatibility is incredibly rare, who knows

I feel like LBP3 needs cross-play, or at the very least, cross-buy.

I do not want to have to buy 2 copies of the game in order to play with all of my friends.

I mean... I will if I have to, but I'd really prefer not to. It's a community-focused game. There's really no reason to split the community.

This is serious business, I really hope they make it able to play LBP3 with your friends on PS4...

As much as this holds true, there are parts of the community split amongst the different games (LBP2, LBPV, LBPK, etc. I understand that it would be different with LBP3 since that is supposed to be one large community. I hope that there is crossplay but I do worry that there will be issues involving it like mentioned by others.

Yeah. It probably will be, because a whole lot more people have ps3 then ps4 right now, and I don't think they would split the two apart in lbp3 without trying to do cross play. Playstation all stars battle royale was cross play on vita and ps3 and it worked great! I really hope that lbp3 will have cross play

Judging from the create mode presentation , I'm assuming the touchpad will be only used for the popit cursor, specifically in create mode. LBP3 is supposedly only having 2 ps4 exclusive features (announced as of now), which is the touchpad and level trailers. These have no affect on the multilplayer gameplay , so I'm really hoping theyve found a way to have crossplay between ps3 and ps4 I'm the only one out of my friends who has a ps4 2014-09-02 03:46:00

If there are touchpad features for the controlinator or something, then I bet that those levels can still be entered or at least show up on ps3, but it would be the equivellent to someone playing a cross controller level without a vita. You'd need a PS4 player to play with the touchpad features, I could be way off since I don't know if there will be crossplay, but this is just how I'm imagining it.2014-09-02 07:22:00

As much as we all wish that it will happen, it just seems somewhat unlikely to me.

Obviously, I have no clue as to whether this is even possible or not, but who knows? Sumo Digital could be getting ready to surprise us.

...or not

This does seem kind of necessary though, since they are pushing for cross compatibility, and releasing on 2 generations

seems commonplace to me, and seems like they would realize something like that when they brainstorm for LBP back-compatibility functions

but barriers HAVE been known to stop things that seem commonplace, I guess we just wait and hope
