A Horror Story

Archive: 11 posts

So I've been using LBP's create tools for many years, since LBP 1 where I made my first glass slide! Since then, I've made plenty of levels, all under the username gdewitt, but now I have a new name and I've gained more skills, so I want to use them.

My plan is to make something scary, a level like the community has never experience before. I have a lot of background on what scares people, (No not just jump scares) and I've always wanted to do something like this, I figure now is as good a time as ever. I don't want this "level" to feel like littlebigplanet, I want it to feel like something completely seperate. You'll still be controlling a sackboy, but now there will be doors and light switches. I'm not talking, step on a big red button and a piston lifts up a brick opening a passage, I'm talking a flat door in which when tapped opens to a room on the other side, no left to right, but in and out. Same for the switches, they aren't the normal two-way LBP classic switch, but a cog on the wall that when touched spins and activates something. And which can be turned off or be combined with any number of things.

These things may sound very trivial, but in fact are taken for granted as they are more complicated than they sound. For example the door needs to teleport you in order to give you the idea you just went to another room, without the player knowing, without killing you, with a 100% chance of not killing you. This can be done with the Teleporter that LBP 2 has through a DLC, but vita can't get that as far as I know, and I don't have it anyway.

In a level like this, the details are where the life of the game comes in. One doesn't simply get scared by a sackboy in a dragon costume chasing it through the darkness. Feeling frightened comes through suspense, sounds, lighting, shadows, all kinds of things. This isn't a game that can be done over night, I'll be working on it for quite a while, if anyone wants a look at whats up so far, which is a decent amount since it's roughly 20hrs in to production, let me know, and Ill publish a sneak peak. Just be warned that the level is nowhere near completion, but I will be completing it over the next few months.

The LBP vita community isn't so big and there aren't so many amazing levels out there, my goal is to add one more to the pool so someone buying the LBP for vita can have one more reason for doing so.

You can teleport the players in a simple way using controlinators.

I also once had a scary level in project (really creepy stuff, trust me), but it got canceled since there was a high risk of being moderated by the devs. I remember a horror level, which got taken down after a few days, probably because it was inappropriate for children, and this means the majority of the community. Your project sounds very ambitious, but I think it's better if you focus on the positive emotions rather than scaring someone.

There will be a story so it wont be just scary, and it is still LBP so it will have a kid type touch to it. It wont be just scares though, I want it to be fun, with different mechanics than normally. Like keys that you can find to certain doors that show up on screen or something, like a HUD.

Also, the reason why I couldn't do JUST controlinator teleports is because it would start to become unreliable when I have controlinator teleports all over the place. I for some reason couldn't find a way to just turn one on and leave the rest off. For whatever reason I dont think thats possible, but anyway, I did use a controlinator for the door, and it is functioning beautifully. But it isn't just a controlinator.

Also, my plan isn't for gore scaring, Im not going for the cheap gross out the viewer in to being scared thing. It's more adventurous and creepy than anything.

Oops, I forgot to check this thread...
So it seems to be alright, I guess? I thought you were talking about a true horror level.

now that I read about horror levels being taken down, I just have to ask: how big is the chance that a remake of Five Nights at Freddy's will be taken down? I might want to know before putting too much time in it.
I'm sorry, normally I don't start about my own levels on other threads, but I just had to ask.

On topic: I am really interested in what you're going to make. I like horror, and I absolutely think there should be some cool horror stuff on the vita. So I'm excited!
Though I'm wondering, there is a "scary" tag available for level descriptions. So, how scary is scary allowed to be? Maybe the level was removed because of too much blood and gore?

Hard to tell because I only saw one case where a horror level got moderated. To be honest, I was surprised since there were already other more terrifying levels and people still are able to play them. I can assure you that there wasn't any blood and gore at all, it was more psychological stuff, I can't exactly remember what it was because I played it only once and it was a long time ago. It wasn't good enough in my opinion. 2014-09-05 18:10:00

Well I'm here with an update. I'm roughly 28 hrs in to production, and the bulk of the storyline is set. It's a much bigger project than I had anticipated but it has been nothing short of fun to make.

This isn't a platform focused level, so I only have one life point at the beginning as your not meant to die. I also played on the sound effects a lot, instead of having a soundtrack in the background. I must have used at least 20 or so different effects. Basically the whole point of this game is to find secret rooms. Each room you find, the secret ones, unlocks an "achievement" and points are awarded. If you find all ten then you have the max points. Each rooms gives a small amount of background on the little boy that appears in the intro.

I don't want to spoil any of the story here so I'll leave it at that. So far this is looking to be really quite cool. I'll probably release this part soonish followed by a part 2 a couple weeks after. The 2nd part isn't meant to be the same length, only to finish the story as I won't be able to fit it all in this single level. Thermometer is too high.

Oh and the logic I needed in this level happens to be so much more than I had anticipated. This is a high tech level for sure, even though it may not seem it at first. You'd be surprised how hard it is to make a couple lights turn on and off, but if they're on and the player walks to a specific spot, they blink a few times and then go out permanently.

Lastly, I'm having my fiance and my brother play test this along with me before I release it, so I'm hoping it will be pretty much fool proof come release day.

Introducing Despair, The finished product. After 46 hrs of production time. And weeks of real world effort, have fun exploring this maze like masnion to your hearts content. I have also put it through extensive testing with myself and two other testers so it should be glitchless. To a point, dont go messing it up now. In total time, if you were to find all of the secret rooms hidden throughout and unlock all the achievments for a three star rating, it will take around half an hour. It is worth doing this too as you get a much better experience, though the game is finishable in a very quick fashion if that pleases you.

I will do so! 17 plays are definitely not much! But its a horror level and maybe the younger players haven't been allowed to play it cause of their parents.

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

I have played it. It is kind of scary. It has a cool story, nice platforming and a really cool atmosphere.

I don't think, there's much scary stuff in LBP. The most time it looks not scary. This one is scary.

Play it with headphones and at night.
