Pokken Tournament

Archive: 13 posts

So today, a crossover between Pok?mon and Tekken was announced today called Pokken. It's basically just Tekken with Pok?mon. So far it's been announced for Japanese Arcades for 2015, but I doubt that they won't put it on the Wii U in the future. Anyway, TRAILER TIME!!!

This had better come to the Wii-U eventually. It looks really cool.

Namco made those Mario Kart arcade games too though (the ones with Pacman), and those never got ported to consoles.

Hopefully it gets released in North America too.

I kept seeing this on the side-bars of websites. I kept reading it as Pok?mon Tournament and I was like "whuut?" And then I read it again and assumed it was like Picmin or something. Funny that it is actually Pok?mon Tekken, I guess this is one-step closer to that Skyrim-sized Pokemon game I keep seeing on internet comments.

And how many playable characters?

So far Lucario, Machamp, and Blaziken were announced. Also, the game will for sure be released here, since there was an English trailer on the Pok?mon Youtube channel. Home console ports may take a while, since Tekken arcade ports usually take about a year to get to home consoles, so I doubt they wouldn't do the same with this.

The main guy behind the project was answering twitter questions earlier yesterday. Here's what he's said about the roster:

- The roster is NOT restricted to only fighting types.
- The roster will have, but will not be limited to fully evolved pokemon. (Meaning NFE pokes are confirmed)
- The roster will have pokemon that are Quadrupedal/non bipedal
- He has "No comment" on if type matchups will be in the game. (I'm gonna take this as a "they're working on it but can't say anything" situation).

Honestly this is looking very promising, and with Nintendo's NA youtube account publishing the trailer, I'm 100% sure they have plans to release the game here as well.

This is one of few games that would tempt me to get Wii U (if it releases for that).

Thinking about the roster, I'll definitely be rockin' a Raichu (if I can). Other than that, not sure who else I would use to battle.

It would be a pretty bad idea to have type matchups in a fighting game. I mean, it'd be pretty imbalanced if you were using like, a Blastoise against Blaziken and just kept spamming Hydro Pump or something. That'd be a messed-up tier list, for sure. :B

If anything, they should at least put in something like status effects, kinda like how Persona 4 Arena did it.

Not if you had to pick your "Team", compensating for each of your pokemon's weaknesses and retaliating with a strength.

You'd still have people switch to a pokemon with a type advantage, and spam moves with said type advantage, rather then relying on actual skill to win a match.

This kind of thing just wouldn't work in a fighting game area, unless you want a broken mess, IMO. <:1

I could see this working in the sense of Marvel Vs. Capcom, where you choose a team of 3 characters, and can switch out at any time or have one of your other teammates temporarily come in and do an attack.

And you retaliate by switching in a resistance...

It becomes a game of using all of your fighters on your team strategically. There could be a time limit for the amount of switches in a certain time period, obviously so that it's not spammed.

I think it could be a neat mechanic if done well enough.

As long as there's some kind of limitation in place, I could see it being kind of cool and unique to have type advantages. Even if it didn't do more damage, maybe super effective moves could have more hit-stun or something, so you could get some cooler combos on certain Pokemon.

Switching Pokemon could even require you to not be hit for a second or two while you're switching out. I dunno. It just seems like if they could make it work well, it might be really cool.

Another thing I'm kind of hoping for is hold items. I wanna be able to equip myself with an assault vest, life orb or a sitrus berry. Or a choice scarf (lol).

If they did do something like that, then they would have to be very careful not to have that kind of thing be abused; we don't need to so that you could repeat the same combo of LP - MP - <- -> MP for an infinite combo due to the prolonged hitstun. They'd have to limit it so that can be done once per combo, period.
And if they have moves that already force the opponent into prolonged hitstun, then it'd seem almost redundant, but I could be wrong.

Tagging out for a partner has been a thing in Tekken games for awhile. Also, Mortal Kombat did it as well. There could be other fighters that do it too but I can't recall all of them ATM.

And hold items actually sound pretty neat. Have a berry you can use when you're put into a poison state, or confusion, etc.
