Turning off/on magic mouths i.e. the Meerkat Queen?

Archive: 8 posts

Well, in my current level, I need to have my characters change what they say when I pass them.

I understand what to do to turn on another magic mouth; however, I want to have one magic mouth only speak before the event in question, and the other only after the event in question. Well... actually, to make this even MORE fitting to the story, I may actually need to have it change three times...

So, um, yeah. How would I turn OFF a magic mouth, I suppose I'm asking.

Put it on a dissolve block, and get rid of the dissolve block.2009-02-22 14:51:00

You can set magic mouths to only activate with switches. How the Meerkat queen works I am guessing is that there is a proximity switch which activates the first mouth. They must have the switch system break when you go off and get the son, something like putting the mouth itself on a piece of dissolve, as LFF said. The second mouth is fired by having a mag switch which is triggered by the son's proximity make the second mouth speak.

It's complicated even further by having the mouth area actually on a rotatable thing. There are two mouths on a circle, but you can only see one at a time, the other is hidden by the face. While the player is way off screen the wobble bolt on her head fires on directional, bringing around the second mouth which is activated started by the key. This way they can have two "moving" mouths when you approach her for two different reasons.

You don't have to make it this complex though. Just remember that Magic Mouths can be fired by switch systems, and that you can put extra mouths on the character and simply make them invisible. All you need then is a middle system which will only fire the right mouths at the right time. As long as the mouths are "roughly" where the character is suppose to be speaking, most people won't actually notice that the lips aren't moving, especially if they are talking about something else to distract them.

That's how I do the magic mouths in the "Dr Spongehead" series. It's less professional than the Meerkat rotating thing, but a whole lot easier to set up.

These are great suggestions so far.

For turning ON a magic mouth that is OFF:

My personal choice is using permanent switch as a "de-repressor". A block of dark matter glued to a block of dissolve. Mag switch on the dark matter, the key on the dissolve, and the switch set to inverted and connected to the mouth. This is an easy way to trigger when a magic mouth is turned on. Simply hook whatever trigger switch you need (prox, mag) to the dissolve.

For turning OFF a magic mouth that is ON:

I do what LFF suggested. Mount the mouth on dissolve. When you don't want it anymore, trigger the dissolve. You can even use the same trigger switch as controlling the above derepressor switch if the goal is to change which mouth is active.

Eh, this ain't TOO important, so yeah I probably won't do this. CHANGE OF TOPIC!

... I REALLY need help making those doors that always stay open after the switch. I have the dissolve and magnetic key set up, and have it set to reverse. However, it always moves once when I DON'T do the thing, so yeah... can some one set me straight once and for all and tell me HOW to do those door things >_< I could have sworn I was following the video exactly :/.

OK - so just a few questions to clarify:

What kind of switch are you using to trigger the mag switch on the dark-matter/dissolve set-up?
Do you have this switch connected to the dissolve?
What do you have set to "reverse" ?

The piston/bolt controlling the door?
or the Mag switch on the dark matter?

Should look something like this:

Where Switch A is set to either On/Off or 1-Shot
and Switch B is set to Directional and Inverted

One other note - you may need to tweak the piston to Backwards so it goes from closed (expanded) to open (retracted).

Use an AND switch. Have a proximity on the character and the event tied to the AND, which controls the magic mouth.

You can also use an AND switch to shut off the first one, just invert the event command going into the AND switch and keep the proximity switch the same.
