We don't know for sure what had happened. Some people on Twitter are CLAIMING to be the culprits, but until SONY release an official statement discussing it, we can only speculate.2014-08-24 12:56:00

People risk jail time and massive fines for what? The FBI has resources and will more than likely catch these kids.2014-08-24 20:41:00

Relax. PSN was down for a month that time because hackers found a way to bypass the network's security system and the users' data was compromised. It took so long to fix because Sony needed to rewrite the code in order to mend the breach.

In this case, it's just a DDoS attack. The hackers simply overloaded PSN's servers with information so that legitimate users couldn't connect. Fixing it should be pretty straightforward.

I saw one of the comments on twitter from someone involved with the group claiming to be the culprits. He said:

"look at the statistics, less than 1% of hackers get caught".
I'm pretty sure 99% of hacker's don't get caught because they do it as anonymously as they can. Posting on twitter saying that you did it is definitely not a smart thing to do.
