Realtime clock switch

Archive: 20 posts

My suggestion is for a switch like an alarm clock. It would operate on the actual local time. You could set it to switch on or off at any time of day. It would be very useful for real-time day/night cycles. Maybe it could be used in adventure games, changing the enemies depending on when you're playing.
The possibilities would be endless.

What d'you reckon?

Yeah, this would be very nice. I guess it would go to the PS3 or PS4 time. Though the question is if you're playing with someone who is in a different timezone and it's night where they are but still day for you (or vice versa) then what time would the level go to? Go with the time for the game leader?2014-08-22 03:31:00

Amazing idea! I can see it being used in RPG levels where u would have to wait for night time to preform a heist or something. Brilliant idea!2014-08-23 05:34:00

That's why it should be used more as a scenery tool.

It should just sync with the host's (or "game leader"'s) system.

Yeah that's pretty much what I assumed.

Why not?
I bet if part of the level was only accessible at midnight, you'd make sure you played it then, to see what's there.
It could be abused, but frankly, what part of LBP couldn't?

Remember, LBP has lot's of kids that play it. Most kids can't stay up until midnight, although, for dates, it could be good, like you can only access a part of the level on Christmas.

That would be a cool tweak for the global lighting tool; "sync to system clock"

I like the date idea. Maybe you can have multiple dates for when the part of the level is open. Like with seasonal dlc, maybe you could have the level open for a whole week or even longer depending how you set it.

Please, please, please allow us to use the time and date from our consoles to determine certain logic in our levels. I'm actually talking to someone on twitch at the moment who is making a level that he's going to change for Christmas. Instead of ordinary boxes, he's going to change it to Christmas presents and decorate it with lights. Wouldn't it be great if he could set that up to happen automatically via a Date/Time chip!2014-11-26 12:10:00

For something like that, couldn't they just republish it with all the Christmas additions? Although i can see why it changing in-level would be neat.2014-11-26 12:28:00

There's so much more potential though. You could change the lighting depending on what time the player was playing for instance. You could even make a calender.

When i saw someone mention this before, which I believe you spoke in that thread as well, (Which wasn't that long ago), it got me thinking about the idea.

My thoughts on it, is that it's a little needless. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun feature to have, but as far as uses go, it DOES have a few of possibilities, but those possibilities feel somewhat... Errr... Useless.

I remember those games where the timing of the day and even the year affected the game, but they all always felt like they were just for some item, or a gimmick. I usually found myself just changing the time on my system to get/do the thing the timing did. A timing system that could be saved in-game would be far more useful. That way the timing is dependent on the game, and not the outside world.

Now... there is ONE other possible use to really give something like this a good reason to be available, and that would be a Tamagachi dilemma. I have no clue as to what it would actually be called, or if it even has a name, but basically; the premise that- if you do not do something in a certain amount of real-world time, then some sort of reaction will occur. For instance, your little Tamagachi dying from starvation.

Although! This type of thing is best suited for things that you have quick access to. For LBP3, the player would have to go home, start up LBP3, then go to the level(s) to do this thing in this certain window of opportunity. This also works for bigger games, but mostly for giveaways or special events.

Buuuut... I cannot say I know how something like this will turn out. Will players even bother going back into a level with this type of timing? Most levels ARE one-shots, and then there are other levels constantly coming out that take attention away. LBP is like the early game industry on crack. We get level/game after level/game coming out in the LBP creato-verse, saturating the market that we, as players, pay our attention to.

Anywho. Fun idea. Although there are definitely more useful tools we could use. Unless of course there is some huge worthwhile thing that this real-world timing counter can do, For the moment, I can't think of any. I'd like to know if there is though.

Well, you could have areas or events that only occur on Haloween or Christmas for instance. The user wouldn't know about these and would be quite intrigue when he hears someone played the level and had a slightly different experience. He may well then return to the level to see the changes himself.

If you played a level in winter time, there would be snow on the floor and therefore certain areas would be slippy and play slightly differently, making your level feel more dynamic and interesting. In autumn you could have leaves falling or different creatures appearing.

A special prize, wrapped in Christmas paper, that unlocks on Christmas day would be another great use.

yes, you could adjust the time on you console but that doesn't take away from it being a neat and useful tool

It would be useful if you wanted to integrate a daily gift system, that gave away in-game points or prizes every day. That will keep players coming back everyday.

I would think a Sim City type game would benefit from this tool, cuz it wouldn't take you a day to build your dream city, you would have to continue another day and so forth. I'm sure Clash of Clans, Samurai Siege, Castle Clash, Star Wars command or even Hay Day comes to mind. It's a progress game. It would be nice to entice players to keep coming back on their free time with daily gifts with the Time/Day tool.

Of course it's possible to just create a customize in-game timing system, but for that, the players would have to be on and currently playing the game in order for time to progress.

I put this idea and my 3 month DLC unlock idea to a developer over at Gaf, and this is how he responded:

Those are some nice ideas Gribble. We appreciate the feedback and we can definitely look into it. ^^

Looks promising!

I've also put to him my idea of adding sound On/Off and an output on everything with a built in sound.
