More options for water/ New water hazard ideas

Archive: 33 posts

Water is a wonderful feature to the game and I love it very much, however it's use as a hazard is limited. I'd like to see some more options to water to expand it's potential uses

Opacity: Like murkiness, but more. Changing the opacity makes the water look more like crude oil or sludge. This could be used to make water that looks like maple syrup, jam, or caramel, to list a few examples off the top of my head.

Thickness: Changing the thickness of water will change how things can move through the water. Extremley thick water will cause items to sink slowly, and also cause sackboy to swim slower through it.

Hazard: This setting will allow water to take on the properties of hazards without having to put an invisible hazard on top of the water. Electrocution, Fire, Plasma and Gas can be applied to water, with an addition to a few new hazard types

Frigid water: Similar to the old "Ice" hazard, Frigid water will cause sackboy to slowly get colder and colder, eventually freezing him and causing him to shatter. The time it takes to freeze can be adjusted

Boiling water: Similar to fire, boiling water causes the water to become hot, but not like fire. Boiling water slowly makes sackboy hot, hurting him and causing him to pop. The time it takes to pop sackboy can be adjusted

Drowning hazard: This one is self explanatory. This setting causes sackboy to loose his ability to swim. Falling into water that disables swimming causes sackboy to sink, and drown like you would normal. However, this is instant

Visual Effects: Water can be given new special effects. Some ideas:
-Bubbling/ Boiling water : Water forms bubbles of the surface. The rate at which these bubbles form can be adjusted
-Steam: Water can produce a steam of fog above it, the color and thickness of which can be adjusted
-Glow/Brightness: Water can be made to appear to be glowing brightly, or look very very dark. This can be used to make magical glowing pools or inky black oceans.

Anyways thanks for reading!

Great ideas. I love using water as a level element, and the more options the better. You should be able to change the drown timer as well.2014-08-20 02:23:00

Or remove it completely.

Oh another Idea. I think this is possible in LBP3 but the ability to change Sackboy's weight to make it so he can walk underwater.

Yeah, toggle has an underwater walk animation, so it'd make sense to give the player the ability to let the other characters do so as well.2014-08-20 03:17:00

Timed water hazards can be done already but it would be nice to have a more realistic bit to it like with the freezing water or the boiling water. It would be great for it to be animated to suit that. (it beats having regular water with just some sfx that burns you when you're in it for too long)2014-08-20 04:11:00

Reading through that part of your post has made me think, what if a feature is included where you could raise the thickness to a point where the water can actually be made to walk on top of it, and cause sackboy to walk slower and slowly sink into it and, once he has submerged a certain level he instantly dies, as if he was walking in a marshland or walking on top of custard, or even quicksand.

What do you think?

Like that Cornstarch and Water stuff! Once you stop moving you start sinking

Sounds neat. I had heard that certain characters can be set to walk on water or sink. So maybe we may actually be getting that feature. I read it somewhere so it could be false but I hope it's true.

Toggle sinks and Little Toggle can walk on water, so maybe its possible through tweaks. We wont know until November

What i want is having a water material, so the whole bottom of a level doesnt get filled. Also, when water is emitted, it can have an increasing effect to where it can create either a pool, or a small slippery puddle depending on how much water is used. Aso, water can have mass, to where some water is harder to swim in, to a point where you could get crushed by enuogh water. Also, add different types of swimmable liquids, like jelly, or lava.2014-08-21 09:56:00

A water material wouldn't be hard at all. It would kinda be like the Source Engine's water, where its just a block that can be stretched and moved to cover a whole area.

What i'd also really like to see is an Air block that cancels out the water in a specific zone. Good for submarines

Oh yeah, I remember having that idea way back before LittleBigPlanet 2 came out. Shame it never happened. The water in LittleBigPlanet looks so nice, it's a shame it's not very versatile.

Ah, that's what I guessed actually. That probably makes for some fun puzzle levels. I hope we can edit how characters react to water.

That or a separate water material that has water physics for the specific area and can be placed like any other material. I just imagine it could get glitchy if corner edited. Eh, I dunno... It works better in my mind

Amazing ideas! Hopefully, they get added to the game . Maybe they can add a liquid tweaker or something so that all those things can be tweaked. 2014-08-23 05:43:00

If we do get an improved water system, this will most likely be it. It would be a huge technical barrier to get fullly simulated water physics in LBP, and still run properly. What should be added, though, is what you said. Allow the players to create static regions of water, similar to the water in Kirby side-scroller games. It will behave just like normal LBP water. Any other use of water (most likely aesthetic if it can't be achieved with the material) should resort to the projectile water from LBP2. Perhaps Sumo can revamp that to.

That's EXACTLY what I was getting at!

But also going back to the air block, I do still agree that there should be a material for that too for if you just want to have a water level but with one segment that isn't underwater (like a secret cave or something)

Im not a coding expert so im not sure how difficult an air block would be to create. But Sumo Digitial is composed of Wizards and Magicians so im sure they are completely capable of doing it.

Or a proper submarine! Yeah, I think it'd be a useful addition as well, especially for a true underwater atmosphere, like if you were trying to make a Bioshock level. The only problem I can think of is the air material getting in the way of other materials during creation, but I'm sure there's a way to work that all out.

I just hope that the water can be in a more confine space instead of the way it has been in the previous or atleast have an option! I, too would love an actually water material1 2014-08-25 20:54:00

I haven't used gas in ages. How is that different than other materials again, besides being non-physical?

Thats basically it. It passes through any block like a hologram material

Being able to place static water would be great for surreal levels (Or Kirby fans)

Yeah there is that too I suppose. Well then I'll say it's a good feature for static-water fans.

It'd be nice if you could make it invisible. Then you could make a completely underwater level with stylistic visuals apart from those water normally has.2014-08-30 00:46:00

I dunno, they still haven't been able to completely remove those sparkly bits from water, even at 0% Removing everything might be too difficult

I dont really understand what you mean. I mean you could just make the surface of the water really high up and have it really clear.

You've still got bubbles and sound effects to deal with though.

Exactly. Plus it would still be obvious that you're in water since it would still be visible.
