Top Down capabilities

Archive: 8 posts

I've created a top down vehicular combat level in LBP2, but I could never finish it because of thermo issues and lag. However, with LBP2 coming to next gen and the likelihood of no thermo increases the possibility of finishing it. Other things that excite me for a top down game are the 16 layers, and the ability to make your sack boy walk in a top down view.

Although we have the 3D glitch in LB2, we couldn't interact with those layers; however, now that we have the 16 layers in LBP3 with full capabilities of the other layers there are so many more possibilities! One thing that I would actually like to do is while having a tank fight on the ground there could also be a helicopter fight in the air.

While watching one of the LBP3 trailers I've noticed a sackboy walking on the wall which got me thinking of what I can do with that. This means I can most likely create a game where the sackboy has to walk up to the tank and get in himself. Also while he is on foot I can probably use the power up creator to give him a gun.

There are so many possibilities going through my head with what we have seen so far I can?t imagine what we will be doing with what we haven?t seen yet. Anyways I would like to see what Ideas you?ve come up with for a top down view game.

I said this in a previous post but because of the sixteen layers and probably more we could aim the camera to be facing down on the level from above and create a top down level like that. It would be super detailed too!2014-08-20 12:15:00

Agreed, there will be so much more depth that you'll be able to add into top down games now! There'll even be more smoother creativity between layers allowing for slants and curves on the z axis.2014-08-20 14:30:00

Is it possible to do that? I've never tried to make the game camera do that. If it is then what you said could definitely work.

The only thing I can think of is, if we include the various new tools such as the layer slide into this as well, much more complex top-down racers. If you think about it the possibilities to improve them would be endless. I might start with those when I get LBP3.

I didn't even think of that. very creative thinking!

I keep thinking about top down dungeon crawls. There are some good ones for LBP2, but the 16 layers + the new way they handle thermal holds whole new avenues. I'm also excited about the smooth animation between layers that seems to now be possible. Even if you reserve a couple levels for logic and environmental items, that leaves plenty of room for characters to be moving on multiple layers. IE, walking through a canyon, take a ramp up the side and walk across a walkway that crosses the canyon.2014-08-21 16:19:00

There is one thing that I?m wondering about. Will the layer change be seamless or will it be like in LBP2 where it just jumps from layer to layer. Basically, will the character or car use the ramp or just jump up?

It's not possible in LBP2 without glitching and if you do glitch it, it looks terrible. However, in LBP3 I'm hoping we can aim the camera down, I'm not certain we can though however cool it would be.

Also I am hoping to expand my cops and robbers series massively with LBP3. Like you said more complex top down racing!
