Vharley Series

Archive: 27 posts

Well, this is my first big project, and hopefully one I will actually finish.

See, for the past three years, I have been thinking up a story for a video game. Those who I have told all like it, but I've always been too lazy to actually do it. I thought about a month ago to remake it in LittleBigPlanet, but soon stopped when I couldn't figure out how to make a cart. Now I have actually done that as of yesterday, so yeah, I hope THIS time I can actually make it.

The current plan is in 14 levels, and I can't actually tell anyone what those levels are since Story will be a major point in this series... Although my visual art skills are a bit lacking, so... yeah.

Anyway, I am currently working on the first level. It is going good so far considering I just started it yesterday, but the first level is mainly going to be a story level, i.e. no real challenges or whatever. Sorry, but that is what the story calls for. Hopefully later levels will be able to incorporate actual platforming into later levels in the series.

As for what I can tell you about the story without spoiling anything... Kinda hard, but I'll put the story of the first level in spoiler tags if anyone is interested... Will spoil the first level though, so only read if you don't care.

Jack Vharley is a teenage farmer who lives with his grandfather on a farm. One day, while delivering the crops to town, he returns to find his farm burned down and his grandfather missing. He is convinced by his friend Smith, who is a blacksmith, that it was a conspiracy of the kingdom to bring down a former political critic, and convinces Jack that the mayor had tipped the kingdom off on this. Jack, in his rage, believing his friend who has been like an uncle to him, chases after the mayor... and kills him (will be accomplished by jumping on the mayor's brain). After his rage is over with, and he realizes what he has done, he can't believe that he has just murdered someone. Smith tries to convince him that it was right, but is killed as well by Jack because Smith made him do this. After realizing all that he has done, Jack just runs away, chased out of town by a mob.

It gets MUCH more complicated then that, and I had to cut off some stuff like Jacks childhood friend in order to be able to fit this into the limits of LBP.

However, this is essentially my dream game, and one that I have been dreaming of for YEARS. This would probably be my only chance of ever realizing it.

At the moment, I plan to include a key at the end of every episode, to be added when the next level is there- so you'd need to replay the last level in the series to get the key at the end to play the latest entry. Luckily, I have this site to actually develop an audience since this would be too confusing for regular people to keep up with...

Anyway, again, I am still working on the first level, though hopefully it will be ready... and be able to be under the thermometer. Then I hope I can complete the rest of the levels...

Yeah, not too good at these project type threads. Hope this was ok. And, also, give me some feedback on the little you know also...

One more thing, um... well, just remember my artistic skills are not too good on the visual side, so... yeah. Just throwing that out there again.

I think that is enough for now... It may be more then 14 levels later on, that is just my current estimate at the bottom of the scale, so yeah.

Ok, now I'm done. Anyone have any suggestions or want to help out in any way? And yes, those who have been keeping tabs on me, this IS the same thing as the RPG I said I was going to make a month ago but gave up on.

Given the depth and size of your project, you're probably better off keeping the art to its basics anyways. A visual phenomenon can easily run you 80 hours per level, which for a series this size would take extreme dedication to finish.

The biggest challenge with story-driven levels is that it can be tricky to think up innovative and fun gameplay to carry the player along in the meantime. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that the confine of LBP is that it is platforming environment and grand ideas must be adapted to work in this kind of system. The constraints of thermo are not kind when it comes to enemy-laden levels, so its in your best interest to keep what platforming play you can in most cases.

So, my advice is plan out your plot and script first, then design the action to incorporate the story. Play around with your environmental concepts beforehand so that you avoid making 14 identical-looking levels. Fill in the blanks with platforming play and you have a winner. Remember, your episodes only need to be broken up by the story. You're not obligated to max out the thermo with every one.

This is certainly an ambitious project, and the story sounds solid and feasible. I'll be interested in following your progress. Good luck!

Given up on RPG maker then?

You'll more than likely get bored a few levels in. When that time comes you should try a completely unrelated level or just take a break from LBP for a while.

If you ever need some help creating complicated objects that are visually impressive I'd be happy to help.

I don't think he'll get bored. Honestly, if he's been making the story for years, don't you think he'd want to finally finish it? Just because he stopped on the RPGMaker, I can see you getting bored, try not to though.

Anyways, yeah if you ever need help making some stuff, I already helped you on the cart, hope it gave you an idea of how to make yours. Anyways, can't wait to play the first one.

Honestly, I cannot really discount the very real possibility that I'll get bored... I just am hoping that this will be the time...

Anyway, Whaaaaale just managed to improve the burning farm system, it is just that there is a gap there which allows you to fall, which is no good. But whenever I try and fix it, I accidentally delete buffer dark matter, so, um, yeah... Will need to work around that.

I tried playing RPG Maker, but it was too complicated for my early mind back then.

Anyways, I think all of us gamers have that game idea that we want to turn into a game that has been bogging has for years. That reminds me of mine...

Well, for anyone who cares, I pretty much finished the first level the other day. However, the first level doesn't have enough "action", so to speak, so I have fused the first half of Level 2 into Level 1, and the second half of level 2 is in level 3 which will be the new level 2. So I think there may be 13 levels actually, although I can still change that...

Anyway, I just spent like two hours going through it, making a cave area. I also managed to have a small puzzle regarding paintballs and switches, but then I hit the too complicated error when there was just a wall blocking passage to what would be on the other side of the door .

So, yeah, coming along fairly well to those of you who care . Just... giving updates in case you do.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but seeing as how I've started work on chapter 2 finally, I think I should.

Also, a question: would a key system bother you?

Where, in order to play the 2nd level, you must beat the first level and get the key at the end? Since they're released one at a time, this would mean that you would have to beat the latest level you unlocked to play the next level, so you may need to beat it twice.

I want to do it this way since story is important to this series, but I want SOME sort of audience. Thoughts?

I think you should. Even if people have already beaten it, the level is good, so they won't mind playing it again. They may say;

"dang, i hate rocksauron but i reely leik his lvls so i play it gain so i cna plya da next lvl."

Or something along those lines

I summon thee back from the depths of oblivion, as I'm bringing this project back... hopefully for good this time .

Ok, so, level 2 is started, albeit not much so far. And yeah.

Anyway, a question that I must ask again:

Key system.

Should I have people have to beat one level to get the key for the next and so on? Or would that bother people here too much, and I wouldn't get as many plays anyway?

Im not bothered. You could have keys to the levels even when they aren't locked so it links them anyway. At least I think you can lock then unlock levels and the key still links it.

Meh. -_-

It appears as though I failed last time, but hopefully this time I can... Eh lol <_>

... Anyway... um... yep. I'm now working on a level. Go me! And it's a sequel to my previous level. Go me again! =D

... So I am almost done the first section of the second level. And I hope it's ok, though my dang visuals are horrendous despite all efforts D:

... anyway, yep, I am actually making a level. And yes, the Logic Pack finally inspired me. Yay!

But as you can see from my two previous attempts to bring this back over the course of a few months, it's been hard... ah well, um... Yep, I'm making a level. and massively necroing. Go me! W00T!

Well, gentlemen, I'm still making level 2 after 5 days! WOO GO ME! XD

It's ok story wise and gameplay wise methinks, but my graphical skills are, of course, my falling grace =C

Anyone have any tips for making stalagmites? :O

stalagmites? Well its hard to explain exactly how i usually make them but a good artistic touch is to take a secondary material (usually lighter) and make a smaller thin layer version of it and glue it to the front. Gotta make it from scratch though cause if you just copy and shrink the spikes don't line up.

EDIT: just realized how many times this has been resurrected, that takes a lot of determination.

I've played the original, and for what my opinion is worth:

With MY particular sense of humor, the whole idea of big-headed blocky characters and blocky graphics combined with really serious dialog and story.... is brilliant.

Stalagmites? I would suggest a thin layer, and using the corner tool with the grid turned on. Work on each stalagmite separately by forming a thin triangular shape, and then use the corner tool to slightly round and adjust the edges of it so it looks more natural.

Rock to make things look pretty, just add stickers/decorations and if that doesn't work for you, use many materials that mesh well in an area to make things look a lot more detailed.

Love the look of the ninja BTW xD

K, so I was just working on this with the one who possesses trousers one deems "a kind of imagination that was held by Coleridge to be more casual and superficial than true imagination". He will be helping me on this I guess. Yippee! He touched up a bit on my visuals, so they shouldn't be TOO horrendous

And I'm building up to the conclusion of the level now- still ahve over half thermo though, but, well, y'know :kz:

WELL, me and FancyPants are still working on this... got a lot of the level done, right up to the boss (still need to figure out how to fight the boss though... :/).

FancyPants over there made a bunch of visual improvements, so that's always welcome . Still have half thermo left though- wonder what we can fill it with aside from the boss O_o. Ah well then :kz:
