Final Fantasy RPG Battle Arena [80+ hours, Full Thermo]

Archive: 23 posts

Level Name: Final Fantasy RPG Battle Arena
PSN: Snakeowns
Location: Canada

Hi everyone!

I've just finished a level based on Final Fantasy; well, it's more specifically a combat, but not a normal one....

I've created a true RPG battle, it plays as a mix of something like World of Warcraft (with cooldowns) and Final Fantasy. You control your character with the sackboy.

And yes, there are Melee attacks, Magic attacks, powerful Techniques, an Energy Shield and even Critical Hits! And of course a health bar with 140 HP you must deplete...if the enemy doesn't beat you first.

An usual play in this level takes around 2 minutes and is meant to be played many times, as (I sincerely think) it's quite entertaining.

The level is complete with a ranking system from "D" to "S" (although achieving "S" is extremely difficult, I warn you ) and a Prize Bubble scoreboard system; both are determined by the time you take to win the battle.

With that being said, just try it, I hope you like it! I don't think there is anything similar in LBP!

i played this level a couple of times today and enjoyed it. i can tell that a lot of hard work and energy went into making this. i really loved all of the various attacks, and cooldown methods for the magic. these were very good representations of the series. i will definitely show this too some of my friends that love FF and see what they think.

i do wish the attacks actually hit the characters sometimes, just for visual satisfaction. i know it would be difficult for the sword because of dissolving/breaking issues, but what about the magic attacks? Not really complaining though, since overall i really liked how the special attacks were executed, and the epic feeling of the fight. Some would have strayed from setting this on such a large scale, but you managed to pull it off very well.

Your 80+ hours have payed off...i gave this four stars and hearted for the variety of attacks and effects and the epic feel. Character design was decent, but not exceptional, and i can't say i really enjoyed the background. The whole scene, since it never moves, felt kind of empty(i wish you could have a notch more thermo just to add something to the scene). The music felt appropriate, and as a FF fan, i am definitely glad that someone tackled this project and succeeded such as you have here. Overall i am very satisfied. I hope you make a version 2 of this someday.

If you get a chance, check out my level, it's in my signature. Thanks for the good time!

Nice feedback , yes i tried actually hitting with the sword but it broke quickly, as for the other suggestions I know i must definitely improve my character design (it's my main flaw I don't know how to make humans lol ), and the background.

My next project it's going to be a version of this but for 4 players (1vs1, 2vs2...) as a lot of people who have played this level are begging me for that. It really should be fun to kick your friends *** instead of a jaguar! It will also be a much improved version, I'll try to include 2 different backgrounds with some pretty moving things and also plan of including limits for this one... hehe I enjoy creating so much that all this "work" is very enjoyable.

Any more feedback appreciated come on try it!

PS: I'll play your level on Monday I haven't got the PS3 now

Sounds like another project that someone on Gamefaqs is doing.

Search Immranderson, he has an RPG level, that uses a sticker system and has low thermo usage!

I know, I tried it, but it's quite different to this

That RPG level is much more slow paced, uses stickers and has not "animations" (meaning that for the most part you only see numbers changing- at least that's what I saw ). It's quite interesting but I think it lacks the "fun" factor...maybe I just don't get it lol.

This level is more Arcade-ish I would say, something like a street fighter combat but with RPG like attacks and usual conventions.

Well just try it if you want and tell me if you liked it

I'm trying your level, i will write here comments and feedbacks in "realtime"

Oh, a jaguar attacked me! And i'm Cloud! Cool! I'm reading the turoials... Very god idea, it is like a real RPG! I'm trying all the attacks: sword, fireball, ice ball... they're all wellmade! Oh, i can use the final attack! Wooohhh... Powerfull!
With many attacks i beat the jaguar, and i respawn in another place. I liked this RPG fight style, you made it very well.
Oh, the level calculates your rank, in base of how much time do you spent to beat the monster... Argh, i'm C !! I must do better
But... is it finished already?

So, i really liked this level, you had a great idea, and you realized very well the battle arena. You can make other enemies, cause only 1 makes the level short

In the arena, you can add some other comands, like a sticker switch working like a potion: when you use it, you can add HP or your attack becomes stronger. I fyou add other things to this level, call me
4/5 stars

If you can try my level Sack Quest: the link is in the signature, there is the topic to leave feedbacks and comments

Hehe interesting idea the potion one I'll definitely think about it. The problem is this level is extremely complex, so I can't make another battle : it has full thermo and around 50 magnetic switches hidden.... you don't know how much brain melting I suffered when doing this . Anyways my next project is a 4 player version of this (1vs1... etc) so i'll include a Healing commands and other things
I'll try your level on Monday, see ya.

I had a lot of fun playing through this level a few times and it is an amazing piece of work and technically is very impressive. The mechanics all work and the rating system is an excellent addition that adds a ton of replayability.

The action is very fast paced and doesn?t let up until you beat the bad guy. All the time I was playing I wanted to look at how you did things, try to figure out the mechanics but that didn?t work too well on my end score.

I liked that the scoring system with the bubbles and the hints/tips section. I only got a C ranking after a few tries and won a ?C? placard as a prize. It isn?t an amazing prize but a C ranking isn?t very good either so I imagine the prize bubbles for higher rankings would get progressively bigger and flashier.

I had some troubles picking up the paint gun more than a few times as I would be swinging the sword and back up and move to the middle layer to the gun power up. I don't know if you somehow disable the paint gun on a cool down timer but I this gave me more than a few bits of frustration.

The presentation is the area I?d recommend cleaning up if there is any room left on your thermometer. If there is space you could make a thin layer background of something, a forest or something as I felt I was in a big metal factory. The jaguar beast didn?t seem to fit with the setting and also had a huge amount of hit points. I would never have imagined a jaguar to have so many hit points without being some kind of uber, mutated, spirit, cyborg jaguar. Maybe with the background set to something appropriate for a jaguar or an enemy appropriate for the amount of HP it has and the environment would be cool.

While the protagonist could be made to look more realistic I didn?t think it was a negative for the level as I think it conveys a cartoonish quality that is reminiscent of a lot of RPG games out there.

Other than that I want to see how you did everything and possibly that I want to play your next levels the only things I?d like more would be a more intuitive control room with all of the actions areas easy to get to cleanly. It seems odd that your fireball and ice spell bars in the control room are so long when they could have been small squares on the left wall. It seems as though there was extra space in the room that you were looking to fill up so you extended the spell bars to be really long.

The switch for the big spell is close to the paint gun and sword area and makes the right side feel a bit cluttered or closed in and also caused me some trouble as sometimes my sackperson would grab the switch arm when I was trying to shoot the spell bars.

There is also the sticker switch that you can use to skip the tutorial but I wasn?t able to open up my popit and get the sticker to apply it fast enough as it was always off the screen too fast for me to catch it.

I have some criticisms of the level but they are all in presentation rather than execution and mechanics. I like the play of the level a lot and think that you have done a great job make this work in the LBP environment.

<<<<[I'll also put the same response as in "LBP Land" so everybody sees it , BTW I'm more of a "LBP Central" guy so I primary post here lol)]>>>>

Wow that as some nice and well thought (and written) feedback!
Yes, most of feedback tells me that I should improve the background and general aesthetics, so that's fine, shouldn't be too difficult. Now, about the position of the commands: it was really difficult to decide where should be everything, and it too me a lot of testing, but still, I too wasn't compltely satisfied, especially because of random Paintinator grabs, but I decided that it was good enough to be published.
The thing is I wanted the player to "feel" the attacks, meaning doing a sword jab by repeadely hitting R1 like you were hitting the monster, and the Magic like you were "shooting" it.

At any rate I'll probably upgrade to version 1.2 with some improvements but not much more because of thermo.

BUT, mostly because I'm planning the next project, which should be the "ultimate" one. The idea is to make a version of this level but for 4 players (1vs1, 2v2, etc) I've spoken to some people and in paper seems awesome to compete with a human friend than a AI jaguar... it should be 10 times more fun

So in this project I will take into account all the suggestions and reposition some commands (I'll add Limits too hehe...), when it's done I'll ask some people (you? ) to test it. So here we go!!!

PS: If you really want to see how it works so much, maybeI could send you somehow a key to copyable version of the level.... I see you are interested but it's all based in a LOT of Logic Gates and around 60 switches... I almost melted my brain while doing it Just keep it top secret huh

I think that your next level based on this set up will be a lot cleaner and better laid out as you?ve done a lot of the creating and bug-testing on this level. You?ll be able to use the same mechanics but do them better as you don't have to do all of the experimenting this time around.

I?d be happy to playtest a future level if you want to include me in your beta tests. The mechanics and logic is an interesting part of the level design process for me so I would like to how you do things but I don't know if I?d want to jump in just yet to trace out all of your logic gates. Setting up logic in LBP is like writing code and it can often be tricky to trace through other people?s work if it is not documented or laid out cleanly.

Your next level, the four-player one, sounds like it will be the magnum opus of the two and would be the one, I think, that would be fun to have a tour of the behind-the-scenes-areas to see how you put things together.

Either way I?m looking forward to the next in this line.

I played this level a few days ago, and I have just one word: EPIC.

Being a huge Final Fantasy fan, this made me enjoy the level even that much more. I also loved the animations. I only could manage to get a C rating, but I'll get around to trying for at least a B. Your many hours put into this level shows big time.

Hearted and 5/5. Check out my level whenever you get the chance, no hurries. (In sig)

Just played this level. When I read what it was about I didn't quite know how to imagine a lbp rpg-battle.

- It was indeed fun, but i found you couldn't really identify with the fighting character, like how you can in rpg's. Don't worry about that though, I wouldn't have any idea how to get a real rpg-ish feel either.

- I agree that a better background would be nice, but it didn't bother me too much.

- I couldn't feel any of the FF touch, if the level wasn't named after FF and the character wasn't named cloud, then I couldn't associate it with FF.

- The character design could be better, but I liked the jaguar.

- The options you have in the fight itself were really nice and the action going on was just right. I liked the control layout and didn't have any problems with it, it just took a short while to get how everything works..

- ..which is because of the too fast-paced tutorial. I don't think you should have a time limit on the bubbles. I was trying to get down what was written in the current bubble when the next one already popped up and made me confused. In the end I figured out everything on my own.

- The placing of the "skip tutorial" sticker was strange. The place it was supposed to be slapped on was refusing stickers for some reason and I had to mash the x button multiple times to find an area where it worked.

- I don't know about others, but I like levels that are not too easy. Even the first time when I didn't really get the control elements and rarely used the shield, I still didn't have any problems with losing all my health points.
Maybe you could make it a bit harder or, depending on how the thermo allows it, maybe add another sticker-switch for different difficulty settings?
Or even reduce the characters health points a little.

- Due to the diffuculty, I thought the ice ball was pretty pointless. It was a nice choice and a well thought out effect, but after knowing that the fire ball did more damage, I just didn't use it anymore, because I wouldn't die anyway.

- The ranking system really upped the replayability. I tried a few times and got better ranks after some practice. The learning curve is pretty good and I think the ranks are good like that too (difficulty wise).

- I know this one might be really hard to pull off and maybe even impossible, and it's meant more as an idea for your next project:
After trying multiple times, I think I already figured out a "best attack pattern". The level started and I immidiately knew what attacks to do and in which order to get through fast. I didn't have to react to the enemy actions and just concentrated on doing everything in a specific order as fast as possible.
I don't know how much you can fit in into your next level, but it would be nice to have the enemy make attacks that require a certain reaction for better damager or something like that. Might go over-board of what can fit into a level though, LBP is not a programming language after all xD.

It might seem a lot of critisicm, but they're not big level-destroying things, so don't worry too much.
I really liked the level and I was surprised how rpg-ish it really was when I first played it. It could become it's own LBP genre
It also has replayablilty and was still fun after going through it multiple times.

F4F:
I'd like feedback on my Level 'Expedition Yagon', but be warned, it seems the level is really hard. You could also check out the switch level 'Shiwa's Devices', but you probably wouldn't need to, if you can set up something like you did here.

On a side note, I think my Multi-hit and/or Charge Switch setups could be useful in your next project. If you want to check it out, a little comment on them would be nice, you don't have to write a whole feedback though.

Heh any constructive criticism is nice

Yep the difficulty was significantly toned down.... In my first version you had one third of the HP you have now, at the time I thought it was really easy as I had tested the level around 100 times and knew exactly what to do, but my first rating were "WTF is this I died in 30 seconds, 1 star!!!" :kz: So I made it less hardcore so more people like it (the difficulty sticker idea is interesting although atm I wouldn't know how to implement it... hmm). Hopefully in my next level the Ice Blast will be useful as you'll play against other humans.

Yes I'll try your level soon enough, especially the Switches one as I am an official MagneticSwitchWhore, god I love those lol. But right now enjoying KZ 2 A LOOOT, awesome multiplayer hehe :kz::kz::kz::kz::kz:

Well after a really big Killzone 2 gap (really really awesome game although at the end of the day I prefer the pure fun and infinite length of LBP ), I've updated my level with various little things I got feedback for. Nothing big but anyways, this is the Final Version

Updates:

-Gave more time to put the Pro Sticker, should be fine now; I also made a wider "sticking area".
-Delayed the Tutorial bubbles 1 second so they are easier to read; and your character has 10 less HP, should be a little bit more difficult.
-Improved general aesthetics by adding some lights and stickers to the background, changing some materials and putting another "pre-rendered" background.
-Fixed a bug where you didn't get the "D card" prize, now you can get it.... and you can also get the prize for gathering all letters, which is the "Final Fantasy Logo"!
-Added a hint of my upcoming level which you'll see when you get to the Scoreboard (lol).

Well that's it... oh hopefully now I'll have to time to give the F4F I owe :kz:

Hey Snakeowns! Here's your review:

Pros:
- The concept! RPG battles are awesome, and you've done an amazing job recreating it!!!
- The looks. The characters look really good, and the animations are quite beautiful aswell!
- A ranking system?! Wow, awesome! A ranking system.
- Nice that you let people skip instructions after playing it.

Cons:
- You said you can combo the melee attacks, but.. i tried alot of different timings etc and i don't think i combo'd anything. Would be nice if you explained how to combo.
- You said: The rank depends on both the speed you defeat your opponent. And then there was nothing. I was expecting a Magic Mouth saying: "And the health you have left after the battle is done".
- The ranking system keeps spawning prize bubbles as you walk by. Lame people can break the highscores by repeatedly getting a point bubble. But that's stupid

Overall: Amazing job! I 5 starred it, and hearted it! You've done an amazing job at recreating a RPG experience. I know this review is a tad short, but that's because it's just 1 battle. But yeah, awesome!!

Uhmm.. weird.. I've beaten that Jaguar really quick, but didn't get a rank. It didn't spawn a letter.. Ah well, trying again.

EDIT: Got a rank B now, but it dissapeard as soon as i walked there. Not giving me a prize or anything.

Cool review! Let's see, about "comboing", I was referring that if you constantly hit the melee button you can madly swing the sword (so people wouldn't just tap the button once)... so that would be the combo lol. Unfortunately LBP has its limits so I don't think I could implement a Devil May Cry 4 Battle system hehe . And yep I know you can exploit the infinite bubbles, but it takes a realy long time and I think the person would have to be really, really lame

Oh, and the rank bugs you keep having are strange, haven't been told about them before. The rank system works with a moving piston (timer), so if you beat it really really fast (unhumanly) the S rank may not even appear? Hmm

Thanks, see ya!

I'm certainly gonna have to give this a shot, I've toyed around with the idea of doing a FFVII level myself, but I've been putting it off until they finally release the FFVII costumes/hopefully a creator pack to go along with it.2009-03-03 03:15:00

I was pretty interested to see how you were gonna do this and I finally got a chance to check it out earlier this evening.

Like the other poster I was a little unclear on how to string combos together once I got going, but I thought the ability to have fire/ice as your magic was awesome! I liked being updated on the attacks and I appreciated the serious thought that went into this.

Pros:
Great creativity, you dont see an RPG style battle created everyday
Ability to use magic as well as physical attacks
I have no clue how you managed the ranking system, but it works and its brilliant!

Cons:
More clarity regarding stringing combos together
Visuals were somewhat simple, more details could of helped (dont worry I usually grade pretty hard as far as regular LBP visual standards go.)

Overall really nice work and as I FFVII fan, this only steers me a little further into making my own FFVII level.

Yeah I'm really longing for the Final Fantasy pack, but I hope they put some kind of sword powerup (or magic?). When it's released I will definitely make a very worked FF X (I even prefer it to FF VII, second place for that ). **** MM give us more info!

Hey there. Just played it a few times. I got C every time haha.

Overall this is a very well put together level. Obviously there was a ridiculous amount of time put into this.

Pros:
Replay value is great.
Visuals are amazing.
gameplay is almost seamless, which is impressive considering what you pulled off.

Cons: none really. maybe just that the enemy is the same every time, but I wouldnt expect you to have the space to change that.

Great job here. 4 stars and hearted.

I'm lookin forward to your matrix level. The one I played recently was very disappointing.

Give my levels a try if you can! they're in my sig.
