Is 16 layers enough?

Archive: 15 posts

I was thinking the other day about the 16 layers, no one has actually stated that the creatable layers go past 16. I personally love to create 3D stuff, it's great for top down and 2D levels however, 16 isn't that much. I'm just hoping we have 16 playable layers and then unlimited layers beyond that so people can carry on creating awesome stuff like this!48817 And hopefully you wont have to glitch to get there. 2014-08-11 13:01:00

I'm fairly sure it's just 16 layers. However you will probably have to glitch to get extra layers.

To be honest 16 layers is more than enough for level creators. If you want to make 3D levels then you can, heck you can even do it the now in LBP2. I also must disagree with you saying 16 layers isn't that much when it is. All LBP games (except karting) had 3 playable layers. We got 3D levels from that so I don't know why you think we'll be limited in what we do.

You're forgetting about LBP PSP, which had only 2 playable layers.
Anyway, I agree. 16 layers is plenty and I'm assuming that the 3D layer glitch will still be in the game due to backwards compatibility and stuff.

I made a 16 layer block with the 3D layer glitch the other day and it's not really that long, but it's probably still possible to use that glitch that did so background layers gets pushed forward so it looks like you're going into the background. Like in this level. (https://lbp.me/v/qr6ggw0) So in that way you will be able to have even more layers.2014-08-11 14:51:00

Going from 3 to 16 is actually more than I could have expected. I am positive it will be adequate for amazement.2014-08-11 15:38:00

That kind of scenery will still be possible in just 16 layers. Just requires a bit of artistic manipulation. Heck, I'm sure a creator could achieve a similar effect in just the 3 layers (by which I mean, the same emotional impact of the scenery)2014-08-11 17:02:00

Not quite always right. Tricks can get a artist pretty far. But a artist is still limited by their tools and especially in this case you can't fake prefect deep depth in LBP1/2 with only the 3 main thick layers without the illusion showing it's true face often. For example if a creator is making a basic action platformer level that supports mutiplayer where the players are allowed to run around the level separate from each other in the level, Then no possible LBP bag of tricks can be done to simulate a huge environment with a lot of different layers of depth in the scenery. Unless you do something like trap the players into a single small area such as a boxed in auto-runner level. But otherwise it doesn't work. Even if you make a really nice looking wall that has fake depth built into it, once the players start moving they'll notice there is 0 parallax movement.

Anyways. I'm sure the 100+ 3D glitch layer tool is still in LBP3 since the game is backwards compatible with LBP1 & 2. So really it's not even something to worry about. 16 layers is more then enough for gameplay for LBP. Anymore layers of gameplay and they minds as well should just turn the game full 3D instead. *mew

I personally think that 16 layers is more than enough. I mean, imagine how many obstacles you can cram into a small area for a platformer.

I certainly am, and now I'm more anxious to get LBP3 now.

If you look from sumo's experience, working with LBP veterans, you can plainly see that they wouldn't remove more layers, I'm sure that by 16 they mean 16 playable layers, they may have more for decoration, but that is just my guess

Who would remove an incredible part of LBP

But TBH 16 layers IS alot in itself, just when you get to the back, you would like to have some kind of great 3D background, who knows though

16 layers is the amount that the original foreground background 3d tools covered, coincidentally enough. I think this will more than handle the needs of the average Creator, and facilitate the boundary pushing of the skilled 3D level maker.2014-08-11 21:21:00

16 Layers was a lot more then I excepted to be in LBP3, I thought there'll be 5 layers if a new console LBP is in development.

That's over 4 times the amount of stuff you can create. :O

Yeah these pics are from the Dream World series that i'm currently working. Those four images were from Part 1 as in Part 1 is done and posted to the community. It looks way better when your actually in the level. As i used the awesome 3d layer glitch i found back in LBP but refound it again in LBP2 two years ago. lol I still just can't wait for LBP3. LOL Not to mention we ALL probably have new ideas for upcoming LBP3 levels already. ^_^2014-08-12 00:02:00
