Abstract LBP3 Art

Archive: 6 posts

Hey there! Figured I'd give my new fan art its own thread since the creation process was a very... uh... interesting one.

Altogether this project took around 65+ hours of consistent work and has been much more grueling than the typical collage artwork I make. At first I thought, 'all I've done so far is copy/paste existing images together and added cool effects, how else can I truly challenge myself?' I haven't drawn anything in years (by mouse or pencil) but figured it was about time to jump back in. I'm typically a perfectionist so if anything is wrong with a drawing, I know I'll erase the whole thing and start from scratch again.

And that's what happened. This picture has had numerous revisions but I'll show the interesting ones to keep you from getting bored.

So this first one was from the end of the first day where I was only beginning to scratch the surface. I had a rough idea of the kind of artwork I wanted to make, but didn't know how to translate that with a mousepad without getting overwhelmed. So I did what works best and let my imagination run wild. I came up with a realistic concept with a ball of yarn sitting in a rocking chair, essentially creating the sackpeople we know and love today.

The glasses and book were a bit too creepy for my taste, so I decided to can them.

I spent the next 2-3 days making the characters, and man were they hard to get just right. I wanted their proportions to be accurate to the game yet still have an 'off' feel to them that is hard to distinguish. The first time around I was happy with all of them except Swoop. Not sure why, but birds have always been excruciatingly hard for me to make.

This is where I did an entire 180 with the concept and trashed the whole Mother Yarnball in a rocking chair thing. It just didn't sit well with me... The image itself was fun to look at but it felt too dark for my tastes. So what did I do? I managed to make something (unintentionally) even creepier.

I downscaled the ball of yarn (Sackboy) and put it in a box with a potato sack (Toggle) and spool of thread (Swoop). At this time I questioned how to add a pair of socks (Oddsock) in the scene, so they're all represented in their realistic forms. Never happened though... I did attempt to make the picture a nighttime setting, with their owner/parent/creator checking in on them to see what all the fuss is about. I just could not get the shadow right! After looking deep and hard into this final product, I knew it'd be too serious and I didn't like that. I didn't want Sackboy and gang to look like they're being imprisoned. Back to the drawing board.

At this point I had a major case of 'drawer's block', I had no idea where to go or how to change up the image. I remember going to bed that night and waking up with a fresh mind, surprisingly full of new ideas. As I analyzed everything I noticed what was lacking: the PlayStation brand. LBP and PlayStation have always went hand-in-hand, with LBP being the only game to try out every peripheral/system released (unless Wonderbook if that even counts ). I knew that I'd have to incorporate more of the brand in some way, and finally figured out how. I made that box full of crafts into a toy box full of controllers, with Sackboy holding the Move controller as a kid would hold an action figure.

Fast forward a few hours and I completely redesigned Swoop and changed the wall scenery. Some last minute changes were the 'Toggle Rulez' graffiti and the large pointing hand. The hand was hard to get right, but I hope that after adding the flat-looking texture that it fits the scene better.

So... here's the final art product. Hope you guys enjoyed reading!

To be honest, I actually liked this one the best...

This one was good too, but I wish the shadow and dark area wasn't there because like you said (creepy).

Thanks for the feedback... I agree. While it's less refined, the yarn in a rocking chair does have a simple humorous quality to it that's not in the final version.

And yeah, I was very close to removing the shadow and making that one the final version. :hrmf:
