Flipper Motion Problem

Archive: 6 posts

Okay, I have a wooden platform, set to "out" flipper motion. Simple, I stand on it, and I wait for the 2 second pause to be over.

Well, it's suppose to send up pretty high up, but what happens is I go through the platform... Really weird.

So, my question to you is...

Is there anyway to slow down the speed of it's outward strength or something along those lines?

Is it because I'm using wood as the material?

Sounds like a strange problem alright...

There's no way that i know to slow the flipper motion, but what about an alternative? Piston (not stiff) under the platform perhaps?

Maybe its the angle is too much.. otherwise.. i haven't got a clue why thats happening. (-_-")

I think flipper motion (and any other high-speed motion) tends to skew the collision detection a bit.

I would suggest you make your platform thicker, and maybe make the maximum length of your piston shorter.

I had the identical problem with my pinball level... which is why it shall forever remained locked on my moon. The collision detection fails frequently when sackboy falls onto a flipper platform.

The problem doesn't seem to occur when you're already "on" the platform before it flippers out. But when crashing into it... good luck. Only advice I can give you is reduce the flippers range of motion, or set your prox sensor to a very small radius.

You can even use several prox sensors of small radius piped into a multi-input OR gate to cover a larger area.

Instead of flipper motion, can't you just use a piston with 0.5 speed so it's pretty much like flipper? Because what i think flipper is doing is it is teleporting the platform back to the base. That is what I know, I could be wrong.2009-02-21 09:14:00

I had a similar problem. I had this platform on a piston set to flipper-mode, but the difference with your situaltion is that my piston is activated by a one-shot sensor. It's the same sort of setup like the meerkat popups in the game, though the pistons and the sensors on those popups are set to normal and directional respectively. The reason why MM chose to do it this way is (I think) that high speed pistons tend to skew upon collisions, but contrary to what gilgamesh said this happens faaaaar more to pistons in flipper mode than to pistons in normal mode with a directional switch attached to them (the meerkats work perfectly). So perhaps you should try to copy the meerkat popups? Otherwise I suggest making your platform out of cartboard and completely free-standing. Thats how I solved my problem because my design required pistons in flipper mode, so the meerkats were useless to me.2009-02-21 10:02:00
