The Cow Glitch...as a gadget

Archive: 19 posts

Sometimes you really need a non-grabbable but dissolvable material, or a weightless non-grabbable one, and so forth. The cow glitch really helped pull this off, but property imbue-r would be a great addition, or perhaps multiple, eg:

Dissolveable
Grabbable
Movable
Destructible

And so forth. I know it takes some of the complexity out of some mechanisms, but that is the point. Why take up an extra bit of thermometer with a new mechanism when you can just change the properties of a material?

If not changing the properties, as it may look odd to have grabbable glass, new material types are definitely in order, with different properties from the current materials.

Thoughts?

I had already suggested something similar to what you're suggesting... with mixed responses from the community.

Why, you! Always one step ahead...

Anyway, the suggestion of a blank material about 5 posts down sound good.

I hate dissolve material and dark matter. They are ugly (says the girl who built an entire level out of dark matter). I wish media molecule would introduce a feature that lets you hide them. They don't necessarily have to let you hide anything else, but ... ugh, that ugly green color!2009-02-20 19:35:00

I think that would be cool, I always have problems with grabbable materials being to light.2009-02-20 19:56:00

This is why you take photos of other materials and paste them as stickers on top of your green stuff! If the photos are taken properly (hint: front view in create mode) you can make dissolve look almost like any other material.

Too much of a hassle, and it sometimes doesn't look right. For example, I created a custom sticker to use as some leafy material, when placing the sticker onto the material, it seems to loose it's pixelation or something. I don't really know lol, all I know is that it looks different, as to what it's suppose to look like.

I think it goes like this:

Turn an object to gas (lets say it was originally metal)

Use the material changer to change the material (lets say to polystyrene)

Degasify the object.

You should now have polystyrene that looks like metal.

This was a video I did a while back explaining the cow glitch, but it doesn't work any more, sadly

My newest level has the dissolve stickered, and you're right, it just doesn't look the same. You can definitely tell that something is going to happen to the wall that is stickered. I took a photo of the rock, and then pasted it in various areas because I had to, but the player would definitely say "hey! that wall is going to disappear at some point"

And it's like I said before, it's not like they would have to allow you to do this to every material, it's just that dissolve can be used to create the element of surprise (i.e. a bridge collapsing, a floor falling out) and if you're walking over a bridge that is made out of the green stuff, you say to yourself "welp, I know what's going to happen here!" ... I just think it's a bit more satisfying if you're walking on the bridge and all of a sudden it falls and you exclaim "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Couldn't you just delete the LBP game data, and patches, make a level with almost all of the different COW materials, save it, and redownload the patch. Volia, now just edit the saved cow materials.2009-02-22 05:37:00

i think it was with patch 1.0.7... in the beginning, when the game first came out, it was impossible to get on cool levels. All the beta levels were on page one, and your level would just fall into obscurity the moment it was published. Sometime in december they patched this problem, and added a more detailed search feature. This patch is also the one that got rid of the cow glitch, though.2009-02-22 17:10:00
