What Lies Beneath by graygoose

umm sorry people but i dont have pictures for this one.

the story for this level is that of a scientist that has gone too far through the caves during an expedition and is now... well he's lost. lol stupid Dr. Gray!!

you are then called by one of he's colleagues to search and rescue him, but be most careful for deep within the caves no one knows What Lies Beneath...

you can expect some good platforming and nice visuals in this level, also it too has some added humor like my other level Metal Gear Karas.

Hey graygoose, here's your review:

Pros:
- Multiple paths, adds some replay value.
- The excavating tool was cool

Cons:
- After talking to the doctor, and falling down the sulfur-gas tube.. There's dark visible matter on all the stops, so to speak. All the places where the point bubbles are.
- The level looks quite unpolished to me.
- Dude.. if you take the upper path you get stuck. I'm now at the eexcavation site again, but i can't jump down and get the tool to dig my way out...

Misc:
- I can't get over that thick wall...
- Taking the bottom path first. Well i think it's the bottom path.. not sure.
- Playing again now, see if i can find the upper path.

Overall a avarage level that needs some visual polish.

Well I just got through your lvl.

Now I am new so maybe mine is an untrained eye but...

I thought your lvl was pretty good. I thought you effectively simulated the underground environment. The actual game play elements were a bit tricky and a bit too frustrating. I personally love a challenge but I had to play it three times to finish, and I found it easier for me to go up. If you have made some recent fixes...then they worked. Honestly I might have given up under normal circumstances.

On the bottom path:

I liked the swing elements with the gas barriers (not as easy as some but not too hard)
I didn't like the speech bubbles while I was swinging. Maybe you thought that added to the challenge but it made it hard to read/enjoy and very distracting to my focus on the task.

On the bottom when you begin making your way back up (you get the message "looks like there is a way up" or something like that) you have 2 double checkpoints and must make your way up steps with moving spikes:

I was working my way OK past the moving spikes and past the "odd plant creature" up through the spikes and to the second plant creature then I die trying to get on the shelves with the spikes because I don't notice the checkpoint you have up there. I'm sure you want it to be challenging, but if they get too frustrated they will just move on.

Top elements:

Thought the spinners were cool, while tricky you can still get them in a couple tries.

Overall I thought it was pretty cool...4 stars and Hearted.

And No I didnt find the hidden guy...Hummm

Hey man, i played this one just now, and i have some feedback for ya.

the level is well built, the challenges in it are all possible, the materials blend well, the strange creatures are fun, and it is just about the right length for a level. great platforming throughout, and excellent use of all three layers.

one major thing that bothered me was the text bubbles... they would always pop up with a cutscene, and nearly always when you are hanging over a pit, or jumping around spikes, or standing in front of an anemy thats gonna kill you. and the cutscene always pans away from the player. that was a huge distraction, and made me want to punch babies.

I'd like to see a different doctor-looking person...
anyhow, i gave your level a 4/5 anyway, because the rest was so well built.

I played through this level this morning and it is a much bigger level then it seemed like from reading about it, which is a good thing. I had a lot of fun playing through the different areas of the underground level and enjoyed the broken up feeling of the rock and walls.

I was struck that everything was jagged, pitted or broken up but there were very little curves to anything until the grabbable creature things show up. Even the swinging on a rope things are squares that I noticed. This brings a volcanic, jagged kind of theme to the level and a consistency even though aspects of the level change in the different zones.

There were supposed to be a upper and a lower path though I?m not sure just where they diverged. It seems to me that in many, many places there were arrows pointing out an upper and lower way to go but usually they were just dead ends with score bubbles.

There was a long section after dropping down a chute lined with glass where I slid down for a long ways. My person flew through this area so quickly that I wasn?t able to jump to any of the higher paths and to top it all off I kept getting interrupted with a cinematic camera and dialogue windows. These transitions to cinematic camera took away control of my person and by the time I finished cycling though the dialogue windows I was dead in the fire. Either make the activation zones for these text windows occur at areas where you can?t fall and die or do not use the camera when you do and it would be a lot easier.

After a bit of playing I got to the section where the tunnel is blocked by rocks and you have to backtrack a bit to find a tool. As I was looking around I saw a gap in the left wall that I could squeeze through. It looks like I wasn?t supposed to fit through this gap as this area seems to be where the lower path meets up with the same tunnel blockage. However I died a few times poking around in this lower tunnel before I found where you hid the digging tool.

This section was very aggravating as many times when I swung over to the tool I would get killed by the gas that was connected to the rotating wheels. This seems to be a plane shifting problem as even though it was in a different plane to where I was swinging when I let go of the swing it would try and move me to the free space in the back layer if there was an opening. Then on the times when I go to the tool it would get caught up on the point bubbles when I tried pushing it to the left and I?d get killed by the gas again. I tried to clear the bubbles before I swing across but the gas is extremely hard to avoid when going from right to left and but manageable when going from right to left.

I had a lot of issues with that section but enjoyed the level in general. It was a large level with a lot of nooks and crannies to explore and plenty of the running/jumping type challenges so that it wasn?t a dull moment.
