Abseiling/Spy lowering system.

Archive: 15 posts

I've been tossing level ideas around in my head, and thought of a cool design for a lowering system, but I cannot test if it works, because my PS3 is broken atm.

Basically, you have a small black rectangle, attatched by piston to a block that rotates by a bolt, in a limited range of movement. The small black rectangle has a jetpack with the smallest possible radius attatched to it, pushing the player down. Then, once down, the player can swing to the players own accord. Bolting the top is optional. Using an invisible piston, and having a winch or string for looks would be an option.

Now, you can minimize the size of a jetpack by capturing it as an object, so you could make it near invisible.

By the way, I haven't tested it, and cannot for the time being, could somebody tell me if it works? Does the player get forcefully pushed down?

EDIT: You could make it so it moves horizontally, rather than roatating, for dramatic effect.

I dont follow... think you can draw a diagram or anything?2009-02-23 19:59:00

there is a box in the background. Glued to it is a jetpack with minimum tether length. A stiff piston pushes down the box, thus forcing you down.

That is the theory anyway. My PS3 is still getting fixed, so I cannot see if it works...

hmm... I tried it but im not sure if I got it right, the block only moves slightly but im almost guaranteed to get it wrong.

Wouldn't it be better if the piston wasn't stiff? You could sort of swing more like that, away from the 'rock'.2009-02-26 23:06:00

It would need to be stiff, or sackboy could fly around at will. You could attatch the top of the piston to a bolt though?

Errr.. to the whole stiff piston idea..
Wouldn't it be better to have a rod attatched to a block, which is in turn attached to the piston which makes them go down?

Well what I'd suggest is an invisible contained (super small rubber) which is attatched to a non-stiff rod. This rod is attached to a block which in-turn is attached to a piston which is attached to the top of the thing you're abseiling from..
A mouthful I know.

. . .||
. . .||
. . []|
. . /.|
. /. .|
[i] . |

Bold line = wall to bounce off
Diagolnal line = rod
straight line = piston
empty box = block (VERY small, just big enough for the piston and rod to join)
[i] = invisible container with your jetpack in it

Now EVERYTHING would be in sight here, apart from the invisible container obviously.
So it might look a bit stupid with the "rope" suddenly jarring, but you could fix that by concealing the piston and using some string just to make it look cool or whatever...

Meh, ignore all that.

If you wanted to make someone look like they are rappelling/abseiling you could probably have a sponge on a rope that has a hidden grab switch.

Have the rope hooked to something off screen which is attached to a piston for down, and for sideways...

when it goes down, have the sideways piston go back and forth to mimic the jumping of the abseil.

I don't know if it would work or not, but worth a try.

I was thinking more along the lines of Mission impossible, being lowered by a cable, but meh.2009-03-12 07:02:00

With the jetpack idea you could rappel down (is "abseiling" a real English word? abseilen is German for rappeling, funny how German words pop up sometimes in the English language) and grab something and go back up. I find this a neat idea but the jetpack smoke and sound would destroy the illusion i think.2009-03-18 10:59:00

Abseil is not an english word.

It is more of a european term for rappelling in the mountaineering community

Lol! It's German in origin, but it is the term used in England. So there.

Another thought... You could make a mechanism that mimics the abseil jumping and lower motion in the first layer, and hide it with a thin layer between the back layer and the middle layer.

Use a sponge on a string with a hidden grab switch that when it triggers it you get lowered down like you are abseiling, but yet really aren't... (the sponge would be glued to something in the first layer) And since you can't see the reality, you would get the feeling...

I came up with this idea based on helping someone make some ghosts with a hidden mechanism for it.

Look up my psn and it will be there.
