Lighting Issues!

Archive: 4 posts

Hey everyone, just wanted to say that a problem has been going on for a while. I like to make top-down games in Create, and I have had problems with lighting. For me this is huge because I think most amazing levels rely on great lighting. Anyway, the problem is that when lights are too close or maybe I guess there are too many, some start to flash off while some flash on and its a bit hard to explain. Even when there is just one light, there are still situations where if the camera turns a certain angle (even when the camera is normal 100% player tracking) it still messes up. I just was wondering if anyone else has problems with light integration. Here is a link to a few screenshots (my computer was having problems uploading here), sorry I could not get a video instead.

In each image I did not move the character, I just turned him. In the first one, you see both lights working, the one in front of you, and one off screen to the right. Then, you see the one in front stops working as I turn. Then in the third one, you see
both lights stop working as I turn more! This problem has really been holding me back from using light as an atmosphere in my level when it is needed. Does anyone else have this happen to them? Is there a way to fix it?

I think the tutorials said something about LBBVita surfaces can't handle more than two lights at the same time. (It's the last tutorial, I recommend you to watch it)

I don't know exactly why the lights in your level become buggy as you turn your character, but due to the limit of two lights per surface, I don't recommend to use lights as the atmosphere of your level.

BTW, your level looks awesome! I hope you can solve your lighting issues soon so you can show it in the community.

Yes, surfaces can't handle too many lights. It's still possible to use lighting for atmosphere though, just try reducing your light count, use smaller surfaces and if all else fails take direct control of which lights are on with logic to at least make things predictable.2014-07-27 14:26:00
