DVLC3 - The Results!

DV's Level Contest #3: The Results

Alas, the judging has come to an end. After playing through both levels numerous times in this one-on-one competition, we have come to a decision. Both Dawnbreaker_23 and BLAHBLAH1000 put the niche 3-player theme to good use in their levels, and while there were only two entries in the end, I know that there were a number of other people who had intended to enter but never managed to finish. It's a difficult theme, I'm sure, but in the end, I thought it was an interesting constraint that was worth doing a contest for. So then, after discussing it with the great friends of mine who played and shared their thoughts with me, the decision has been made. Without further ado, the winner of "DVLC3: Triple Trouble" is...

BLAHBLAH1000, for Isometric Disco Party (DVLC3) (https://lbp.me/v/qsmgect)

Awesome job and congratulations to Blah for his lovely entry. The concept of taking an isometric cube and transforming each of its visible sides into a 3-player battlefield was very interesting and unique as well. The controls felt pretty odd at first but we quickly managed to get the hang of it, dodging the splendid variety of stage hazards that one could unleash. The menu was nice and simple, as was the little startup intro. The grey background worked well in not blending in with all of the colors, and yet the flashing disco lights bopping to some disco tunes still set the tone for a nice audiovisual experience. Nice job putting this together Blah, we had a great time playing it.

As part of winning this contest, the creator mentioned in the spoiler above will receive a $20.00 (U.S.) PSN code, a creator interview which I'll get to as soon as I can, and the top spot in a level hub when it arrives. You've also got some bragging rights from having won I suppose, and there's the general joy of having entered and having won. While I don't typically highlight the other levels entered in this contest, there were only two entries in total, so I think it would be sort of awkward not to mention Dawn's entry (https://lbp.me/v/qsmjkxn) some more here. It was an interesting level that also put the 3-player theme to good use, and I liked the simple nature of communicating with your friends while separated in versus mode. The design of the castle was also nice, and the charming intro that came with it really helped set the stage. So while there were some bugs I encountered and some things that could be improved, we still had a fun time playing through it.

Also, a big thanks to everyone who followed and supported this contest. I'd be happy to share some extended thoughts on both creators' entries if you two want, and I know these contests can be rather strenuous with their limited creation windows. So then, thanks for sticking with it, and I hope it was an enjoyable experience, even though only one person could win it. For those of you who didn't make the deadline, I still plan to do more of these sort of contests, and I know the lovely Create Marathon 5 is going on right as I'm typing all of this up. Finally, shout-out to vezonfan01, xxMATEOSxx, VeryCoolMe, and adamaniac987 for their help in playing through the entries with me and sharing their thoughts for them as well. I'll see you again for the creator interview with Blah, and then DVLC4 after that. ^^

Congrats! I missed these entries but I'm not sure if I'd be able to play them as they are co-op levels. Anyway, I hope there is a fourth contest! Watching these are really fun! The contest's theme for this one was a little bit odd, maybe that's why little people made stuff for it, but they have gained popularity in the site so maybe a slightly more simple theme could be awesome! 2014-07-26 19:06:00

Yes, DVLC4 will be coming soon. In regards to the theme, I started this contest series up with basic themes like sand and food, and then after more and more people knew about the series, I thought it would be nice to work with a more obscure theme, as I think that both types of themes can challenge a creator. With something so broad and easy to work with, you have to restrain yourself and not get caught in all of the possibilities. When you're dealing with something more niche and constrained, you have to take advantage of it, and do something that's typically not done as often. Because I'm only doing so many of these contests, I thought it'd be nice to try out the 3-player theme, because quite frankly, I've never seen a 3-player level contest, and I'm having trouble recalling ANY polished levels that I've stumbled upon which are solely focused on a 3-player experience (not that those don't exist already).

There's also just the general annoyances of so many levels being 1P only when I'm with my friends, so I thought that a co-op themed contest, but with the 3-player twist to make it feel fresh and different, would be worth trying out. With that said however, DVLC4 will indeed be going for something broader like the first two contest themes aimed for. I just don't want to ignore the different ways that I can challenge creators, even if it ends up shying some of them away. But for those who stick with those more obscure themes that they're not used to, well, they might gain some new experience having done something out of the ordinary, which can allow them to further grow as a creator.

Thanks for the input, yugnar! It's always appreciated.

I'm glad to hear that, Dawn. It's always nice to see people walk away from these sort of contests with a fun time and some good experience, too. ^^

Wow! Great job to both of you, Dawn and Blah! I'm sure you guys had your rough moments, but now you can relax shortly until the next contest drops for you two and hopefully many more to enter!
A special thank you to you DV for another great contest and I'll continue my sideline support as we move on to DVLC4 and beyond!

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I really do appreciate it.

By the way, Blah and I wrapped up the creator interview together the other day, so now I just need to stitch it all together with some fancy pictures and the like. So expect to see the interview to pop up at some point tomorrow.
