Cranium Conundrum - Indie Game (Inspired by LBP, Looking for Help)

A few years back, I started working on a 2D Fangame of Little Big Planet creatively titled, Little Big Planet 2D. I posted it on this forum because I wanted the community to see and experience the creation of my tribute to this wonderful game series. Here is a video of what it used to look like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM5whXn-Mno
It was cancelled because the project was too ambitious for the skills I had at the time. Although, that need to create a game based around the idea of sharing, creating, and enjoying levels and worlds that you've created. It's itched away at me, so I had decided to work on a game with the same spirit of LBP and the cancelled fangame. It is now called Cranium Conundrum. I have videos of it, but all of them are really outdated. So, instead here are some screenshots:

I am sorry about the long post, I just wanted to let those who are interested know about the project and also ask for help because currently I am working on this by myself and I will not be able to continue to do so and I don't want "LBP2D" to die once again. Let me know if you want to help, or if you just want more information about it. If you want to give it a try, I might post a download for it, although it isn't all that functional currently..

I can't offer any help unfortunately, I have too many of my own projects on the back burner already. I just wanted to say it looks great though, I remember seeing your older LBP 2D posts and while that looked good too I think this new project is a much better idea.

Although I can't help I'm still more than happy to test it out give any (hopefully) helpful feedback I might have. Good luck with it mate, I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Oh yeah, I remember that

So, is this a level builder still?

Yeah, dunno if I would be able to help. Though some details on what your goals are would be nice

Yes, it's still a level editor. As far as goals, they are relatively the same. It's going to be a game where you can create and share your levels (probably going to host a site where you can upload/download levels). The story/theme is you are a Glial Cell that is in charge of maintaining stability in the brain you call home. When something goes wrong it is your job to go around to different dreams and stop all the nightmares from taking over. Right now it's still in an early phase (even though I've worked on it for a while, I've been busy with stuff) so right now it's basically just a sandbox level editor that doesn't quite have the ability to save.2014-07-24 06:40:00

Well, I would suggest you make a long term plan and start releasing it in phases. So like, don't worry about power ups or the like in the first phase, or being able to make your own controller or whatnot.

Also, when you say that, do you just mean the main story? Because I would want to have each level/game be able to have it's own story, and not be pigeonholed into the overall narrative.

Also, would you be planning on monetizing it? It may be best if it is, for a big project like this, but of course you should try and make something before you start planning for money.

Yeah, I meant just for the story mode, which will really just be a level pack created by me, and the players will have the freedom create their own stories and games.
As far as monetizing, from the beginning I planned on selling the full game for a cheap price of maybe $4.99, but I also understand that not everyone will be able to pay for it.. so I might release two versions a paid version and a free version. With only a few limitations on the free, not enough limitations to make them feel like it's not the same game, but enough to make you want to try out the full experience later down the line.
As far as a plan, I'm programming the level editor making sure all the materials, objects, and logic work the way they are intended. I'm doing a lot of more bug fixing and trying to go back and fix things instead of continuously adding new things like I did with LBP2D. I plan on releasing beta updates on the forum or on my youtube page just while it's still in an early phase so people can get a feel for the level editor and let me know if they have any ideas. Once it becomes functional enough to be considered an actual game I will stop.
I also think it's important to note that the logic system is quite different from little big planet. There are no wires, no attachments.. Everything is going off of an identifier system (just like the keys in lbp i guess) If a button with the identifier "blue" is enabled it will trigger all objects with the input identifier "blue". So, I don't really know how complex you can get with that, but who knows.. someone might surprise me.

Will it just be colors, or can we "Tag" identifiers so that there could be a fairly unlimited number of them?

Also, character creation? Or overhead view?

There are 7 colors; blue, red, yellow, orange, green, purple, and white, but the white one allows you to type your own identifier name. So, yeah you can tag identifiers. Character creation is fairly limited right now to changing colors, as while LBP2D was a body made up of many body pieces, Cranium Conundrum is using one animated character. I could add costumes but they would need to be animated. I do not have the skills to do that, so that depends on the artist I can get to help me. I'm not sure what you mean by overhead view, but if you're asking if you will be able to allow your player walk up and down like a top down rpg, yes. A powerup, spider, will let you walk on any back layer material you place in any direction.2014-07-25 23:12:00

I'm working on adding explosives and a few minor changes to the material placing system. Will upload an update, hopefully in a day or two.

Hi, Tristanjmnz

I love your project. It looks great and after test current version I can say that you already did big job! I really hope that you will finish tis project so we will have good game with level editor, so it could be another game community, similar that right now we have for LBP

I also tried to create my own platformer game (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=62360-LittleBigPlanet-for-Android-with-touch-and-Windows-PC) with LBP style (but without editor). But right now I am at the early stage, because I don't have enough free time for it.

If you need help - I could try to work with you. What engine do you use?

Anyway - I wish good luck for you with your project and really hope to see the final version of it!

From Russia with love,

Thank you so much Domik, it means a lot to me that you enjoy the game even in it's early stage. I work in Multimedia Fusion 2, which has been recently become outdated due to Clickteam Fusion 2.5 coming out, but I don't have the funds to make the switch yet. Any help would be wonderful, whether it be promotion, ideas, beta testing(which I will probably only need after I stop giving away updates publicly), artwork, etc. I'm sure this project will be finished as long as I can get the help I need to help me finish it, but I'm doing alright so far by myself so I can keep working and showing it off until I get someone who wants to help and can do what I need them to.

Thank for the detailed answer, Tristanjmnz

I have no experience with Multimedia Fusion, my own game was based on Construct2 engine, right now I moved on Unity with its new 2D features.

Anyway I could help you with ideas and testing if you need it.

I already test your new version and love new features. Great water spray btw.

As I understand all dangerous object right now could not interact with the our game hero. Is it so, or I didn't understand something?

And good luck for you with this project!

No, you aren't misunderstanding anything. While, the player is intended to be invincible in level editor mode.. I haven't really even worked on deaths and damage yet (only a little bit for spikes in play mode). So, that's just me being lazy and prioritizing other things. I'm glad to take ideas or input in any way I can. I'll be sending you a pm.2014-07-29 19:47:00

Side Note: I am working on porting the game into a different engine, Clickteam Fusion 2.5 (this will bring performance boosts, and a wider selection of joints and physics objects).. so I'm afraid to say that there might not be any updates for a while. I hope you all enjoy this one though. Please share, as the more people that are interested in this project, the more likely I will be able to get help and finish it.
