LBP1 - Castle Gothica miniseries

Archive: 6 posts

This is one of my favourite projects. The miniseries consists of [to date] four consecutive levels. The finale is still in conceptual stage. I've been working on this over years, and did other projects in between, so the style (and my abilities) changed a bit over the time.

As I said in my introduction, I quite like the charme of the original story levels, but I wanted to add some new themes. The wedding-levels, and later the Monster-DLC provided us with great materials for a gothic-themed story.

As an ex-goth I riddled the levels with references to (traditional*) goth subculture and music. Bands, song-titles, lyrics and other stuff. (I wonder if most players got any of them). Also I have to credit Tim Burton, the Munsters, Hieronymus Bosch, Edgar Allan Poe and M.C Escher for inspiration. And Clive Barker off course...

I rather aimed for looks and atmosphere than for difficulty or original game mechanics. Although some parts can be a bit challenging.

*i.e. think of Bauhaus and The Cure rather than Manson & co.

She said your death must come first to make this dream more real - you'll never be free again

Yeah, the inconsequence in naming them is on purpose.

I liked how this started, but started to get a little frustrated with the stairs in some sections. Especially in the tower with the bats, when you had to get the key.

While there is a check point, dying a few times as there is no real warning when the bats are coming got a tad annoying. Having to jump up stairs is not really that fun, when you have to do it a few times in a row.

I know that there was a purple light when the bats were spawning, but if you added a warning a split second before that it, would have been helpful.

It was an impressive use of LBP1 logic though!

I look forward to seeing how your creating style progresses through each level and how the story unfolds! Consider them Queued!!! http://i.imgur.com/bjKCAej.png2014-08-02 05:58:00

@Mr_Fusion:

I know, what you mean, I was considering changing that thing with the bats for some time. Unfortunately it is not an easy task because of how it was built. There is little to no chance for tweeking, I'd have to rebuilt that part of logic-mechanism from scratch.

I am thinking about it. Especially, that now you have confirmed my concerns...

-------- update-------

I made a first provisional change. This is propably just a first step. Now all bat-emitters fire at once with a longer break in between, and a visible and audible warning a split second before they start. Still it is hard to determine a save place to stand while the bats are on their way.
