Direction Combiner/ Custom Karts & Tank Tread Question(s)

Archive: 5 posts

Was fooling around in LBP Karting with friends showing them how awesome this game is when the question came up about Custom Karts/ Making wheels (appear) to go forward & backward. And if it's possible to make tank treads.

How do you add a Direction Combiner to make wheels appear to go forward & backward on Custom Karts? I've seen it alluded to but it's kind of confusing in explanations I've read. How do you hook up the logic to your Kart to do this and when you Capture a Custom Kart is it a live object? Meaning as I modify the Kart is the Captured Object updated?

Is logic wired to the Kart you Captured and to the spawn point?

Also is it possible to make Tank Treads? Has anyone succeeded at this? I was playing with the idea of Conveyor Belt material but could not find a way to make the material go forward and backward on command, only forward. I made a rough model to test the Tech (in image below) - Conveyor Belt material would appear "Off" or Stopped and go Forward when either direction button was pressed ( no backwards conveyor belt). Is backwards on conveyor belt possible?

Never tried to make wheels turn on a custom kart but i would try this ( and i think i read it somewhere on this forum but didn't find the old thread):
without direction combiner: You put a speed sensor on your spawn point, linked to a transmettor. Then on your custom kart, put a receptor link to a rotator motor, set to speed scale.
DOn't know if it work exactly this way cause i never tryed. But it must be the main idea and with some adjustement, it can work.

I guess they mean taking a kartinator and connecting the accelerate to the + and break to - of the directional combiner. Problem is people can choose different accelerator buttons, and you'd get the wheels spinning backwards even when it's still slowing down.

I've tried making the wheels' physics move the actual kart, but I don't think that went well. The physics engine isn't as realistic as in LBP.

I'd pop by but there's no online create, is there?

Well, i just found this old thread. Explanation from Atheistw:
How to make the wheels rotate on a custom kart (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=81345-How-do-i-make-a-Kart&p=1123117&viewfull=1#post1123117)

May be this will help to find a solution:

There is a possibilty to change the speed of the animation for the different animated material. You have to select you material (conveyor belt). When you press square there is no possibility to change the speed of the animation. So select you object, presse square and choose, modify the form. Then select " lightweight material" (don't know if it's the name in english) because it's the only material you can modify the speed of animation in the option. Once you set the animation as fast as you want (you can also invert the animation), select again your object , then transform it back to conveyor belt material: The speed of the animation changed!!!

This trick, combined with a speed sensor or a direction combiner may lead to a solution of your problem

I've done it! A working tank.... coming soon as a giveaway!

Thread here: Pocket Tank (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=90110-Pocket-Tank-Coming-Soon-as-Giveaway&p=1171693#post1171693)

Props to lisa_2k6, dissecting her tank allowed me to figure out some piston/ hinge issues.

Was only able to do an animation (moving or NOT moving), invert (or moving in reverse) did not seem an option to me as the animated material has two views. When Off or when On. I chose Forward or Off (when stopped).

It still animates in reverse and if you don't look too closely it may well be moving in the right direction. Maybe with more logic this is possible but I may end up grinding my teeth down to nubs for ultra-realism that isn't really necessary.
