"The Wizard Of Odd" (PICS) By wexfordian

Hi folks.
This level has been out a while now but I've just got round to uploading some pics now so I'm not really looking for massive feedback or anything just thought I'd share it here if anyone is looking for something lighthearted to play. The level is loosely based on "The wizard of Oz" and was designed as a fun and colourful level. It's not meant to be ultra hard and was designed with younger players in mind.

Here's a few pics and give it a go if you like the sounds of it.

I actually ran into this level like 2 weeks ago, I think it was, while doing the Quick Play option.

This one was pretty nice with an interesting concept. I thought the whole thing was pretty creative; Im pretty sure I hearted this.

I've played this one a couple of times. You definitely achieved your goal of making a fun and colourful level. I only have one minor criticism, which is that the part where you are jumping up the steps to the castle is very difficult compared to the rest of the level. I played the level with my girlfriend who couldn't get up all those steps without falling off even after a good few tries. OK, so she is not as competent an LBP player as me, but seeing as the level is pitched at younger players and not meant to be that difficult perhaps it is worth tweaking to make it easier for your target audience. I must admit I did find that section a tad frustrating. Other than that, great work. And the Tin Man changing from rusty to shiny, wow... I had to do a double take, I loved that bit!2009-02-20 11:20:00

Good point and thanks, By the time I got to building this part of the level I wanted to add in something a little more difficult as there is no real boss at the end. But I think your right. It may be just a little too difficult and could frustrate people (which is something you don't want to do right before they rate your level ) Thanks for the input and I'll tweak it a bit tonight.

Hey wex,
I got around to playing this last night, and I was definitely pleased. The level was exactly how you said it would be... Light hearted and fun. The whole level was a joy to play, and the visuals (particularly the fencing) were great! I had a lot of fun playing this level. Overall, the level played well and was very fun. I know you were going for a basic feel, and you got it. I particularly liked the birds, the windows in the emerald castle, and the point bubble string you designed for 2+ players. Very cool!
A few criticisms I had (although I know you're not looking to change much at the moment). Nearly the entire level used up all 3 planes. As a result, this didn't add much by way of having fun running through the level in between interest points. Just making the terrain a bit hilly and having some split ups in the layers could add a lot visually, and could make it a bit more playful, too. The other thing I wanted to point out, is that people aren't designing to 4:3 ratio players, and here's another example of it. 4:3 ratio players simply get less viewable area. So the entry and exit parts of the map where it says "the Wizard of ODD" and "the END" in big yellow letters, gets cut off. Perhaps, consider compressing it, so that all players can easily see it. For the Wizard of ODD text, just pull the D's closer together. The camera box at the end is just too far to the left for a 4:3, and you should pull it in to the right to help out. : ) (This is also an issue with your pinball level as well, particularly the "BONUS" or "x2" type screens)
Overall, excellent work! This is a nice, relaxing, fun level.

This is one of my favourites. My only criticism is that there`s no yellow brick road, which I`m sure I left in your comments when I lpayed it a few weeks ago 2009-02-21 02:04:00

I played this with my friend. It was actually pretty funny, because he dressed up like Dorothy. It's a pretty good level. Well, that's just me I guess, not sure about the opinion of anyone else. Maybe you should add where you fight the Wicked Witch of the West at least, but I don't have to say more than that. It just seems like you cut out a lot of the scenes just by excluding the witch. You could still make the level easy, and funny, with the witch. Like, dump the bucket of water from a shelf onto the witch in her evil fortress, then head back to the wizard in little time at all. Not to mention, you could've had the witch attack you with fireballs, after you meet the scarecrow and tin man, like in the movie. Heck, you could've made her try to steal "your little dog" too!

I give this level a 5. It's good anyways, even without the witch.

Thanks for this, I went back over the level and added in more variation in planes and added some more detail and as a result I think it looks a lot better now so thanks for the suggestion.
