Wooden Works: Part 1

Archive: 10 posts

Hey there LBPC community.

I'd like to preface all of this by admitting this is a duplicate thread. And I know, I know, duplicate threads will be deleted but I am not trying to garner a few more plays, everything was redone around the existing outline of the older level and I split it into two levels to have more space. I couldn't update the old one because the replies on that are outdated and not representative of the new product.

I first published the level almost exactly 3 years ago. After that I didn't pay much attention to LBP anymore. But with the recent announcement of LBP3 my motivation to create is renewed!

So after getting Wooden Works: Part 2 half done I realized how much I didn't like the first part, so I went back and made changes that took days to complete. I pretty much redid everything except the gameplay segments.

So without further ado, here is my level:

Wooden Works: Part 1
http://lbp.me/v/3s0wtq

You, a young sackperson, accidentally wanders onto a truck heading to a factory named Wooden Works. Find your way out by exploring this dangerous place. Do your best to find 10 hidden treasures! Part 1 of 2.

(If for whatever reason you get stuck, the memorizer data will allow you to skip the cutscene and immediately access the sublevel when activated.
Also, I must warn you that this hasn't been tested for multiplayer, so single player is recommended.)

This looks sweet, gonna queue it up.

Edit:

Summary
Inside Wooden works Factory, I found myself enjoying solid platforming and a nice story packed in with some well hidden secrets. I really enjoyed this amazing level

Graphics
The graphics were oustanding from the get go. Every part of the level looked great! At first I thought the level design would clash, since a factory setting and wood didnt seem to go together in my mind, but some how you pulled it off. 5/5

This Guy called me fat

Gameplay
The gameplay in this level was fantastic to say the least. For alot of the level, there was solid platforming filled with bounce pads grappling hooks and more. It seemed like each little section you some how managed to cross through twice, like the part after fixing the elevator, and your heading back and I some how end up at the beggining. I was like ''Wow, how did I end up here?!?!'' and thats a good thing, another part that stood out was when I donned the creatinator to shoot wood platforms. I was hoping you would expand upon it more but sadly you didnt. 5/5

This was my favorite part

Story/Objective
The story was simple but great. Sackboy goes to the store with his mom only to run off and get stuck in a wood factory, where in there he helps workers fix things in order to escape. Each worker seemed to have there own problem, which made great lil puzzles along the way. I started to wonder along the way about many things, like why was everyone scared to help me, or why was the place so tight on money, and who's the boss, stufff like that. Which makes back story a possibility, and thats a good thing. Also a major plus, side objectives for collecting treasure. So that deserves a cookie or two. 5/5

I successfully got one treasure in each section

Overall, this game is outstanding and deserves a little bit of everyones time, definitely worth the play.

I got a chance to play this very good level. I found the gameplay to have a lot of variety and unique sections. The wooden platform creatinator comes to mind. Although that section was pretty tricky, I also liked that it's something I haven't seen a lot in lbp. There were other gameplay sections that have been done quite a bit, but I still really enjoyed them. I'm mostly referring to throwing wood into the hole a certain amount of times before a cutscene pops up. I've seen this plenty of times, but you put a little spin on it to make it very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed the white chalk lines and I had to stay in the circle long enough while fire balls are coming at me. The visuals are very good too. Sometimes I thought the areas could have used more variety. Maybe areas that are darker than others with lighting.

The secret treasures are a great idea. They were hidden in very good spots. However, I definitely found 3 treasures and the score only registered 2.

Great level!

If you could play my Hidden Objects game that would be great!

@SilverTriforce7

Thank you so much for the great review!
I'll happily give you feedback on yours and I'll do my best to provide the same amount effort into the review as you did to mine.

@Greensmurfy

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try and work on the critiques/problems you said.
And of course I'll review your level as well. (Coincidently, I just played it a bit ago in preparation to get some F4F for my level )

hi, i played your level :3

the level was good and a funny idea! i enjoyed playing it!
i will try to focus on tipps for how to make the level better now, because i think that would be the best thing to do.
i also want to tell you that my main language is german and it might sound rude when i talk english, but i don't want to be
rude of course so don't worry! i do that for you :3

ok here you go:

a) first of all i wondered why the kid runned away. maybe you can add a reason for the child to go into the box, like his mom was angry with him or such in a video. could as well be a nice playground for some funny jokes, as it looks like you like to add them in your level.

b) try to speed up the truck and animation when the truck is driving away, it is a bit slow and some might get bored and end the level. sure i dont, but others might. i know a few of those people. heh.

c) nice joke with the "how bad it would be for a kid to get in there", add more like more frequently in your game!

d) I'm not a big fan of showing the name of the level during the game play too long, it stops the flow of the game and again some people might stop playing because of that.

e) the camera settings while displaying text... i think you know what i am talking about... the camera makes jumps and the picture don't keeps how it should be when the next speachbubble is opening. i would not use the build in camera in magic mouthes. i allways use video cameras. i put each camera on a own hologram, than i set all cameras to infinive time and wire them with counters which count if the player hit circle to close down the speechbubble, as soon one new bubble gets triggered it destroyes the old cameras hologram and it triggers the animation you set for the cameras without wire-ing them. like that you could even make good camera movements while they talk or make the camera not shake between text bubbles. as well, and that is the most important thing about it, it allows the player to read, and then in the individual text readinig speed of the player they can continue the game and/or trigger the next one.

f) try to get the DC comics DLC, it contains transparent material, which is very helpfull if you don*t want someone to fall down a hole when they jump and trigger a video. it happened twice on two szenes. a bit frustrating for those who try to ace it later. just destroy it when they finished the video.

g) why do i need to activate a switch to open something i did not see before? couldn't it be open all the time and it would not make a difference? in lbp it seems like all switches do something important and you have to trigger them all. try to don't make the player think that way. make it so that the player thinks, ahhh okay when i do that this is happening which i need to do this and that.

h) set a check point after the rotating spikes bounce pad thing with the unsave workplace speechbubble from the other one trapped to run on that thing, because i did not rlly liked that part, it was a bit difficult to do, and had to do that a bit to often. heh.

i) when you have to dodge the fire woods on that circles to activate it. i would not make them rotate at all, i would use anmaterial with animated texture so it looks like it is moving but it isnt, that way you can jump normal and it don't depends on luck anymore.

j) i was stuck in the door that i had to open that way. i did not realise what to do to trigger the next event in the level until i smashed a few buttons until finally after a time i think i jumped over something to the left. make it a bit easier i would say : )

k) are you kidding me - haha - get it? kid-ing me? KID! a kid here? what!? (would have been funny, lol)

l) the explosives left a little part and did not explode anymore i had to throw 3 or 4 to make them expload fianly

m) "look at that we fainally did it..." and than i jumped down and was not able to read the rest of his bubble text when i
closed the text bubble with circle

n) your level is a bit huge build, no player can rlly guess what to do on first sight, often i just followed the arrows and it felt a bit linear that way just because the arrows were so present. sure my levels are very very linear too, but i try to not putting it into the players attention.

I hope a lot that this helped you a lot. If just one thing was usefull for you i will be very happy :3
as well i want to copy past what Smurfy said :3
you are a skilled creator!
Keep up the good work so far!

Thank you very much for the very constructive feedback.

I did the basic things you said like add extra checkpoint and etc.

But in regards to the rest of your feedback like the slowness of the beginning cut scene or dialogue suggestions is something I'll save in my head for future reference, so your words won't go unheard!

Again, thank you very much, your review, it really was helpful to me as a creator.

Overall, a very fun level.

The opening cutscene was fun and is one of the better LBP cutscenes. The level's visuals, I found, were good at some points while looking very mediocre and almost bland at points. The clash of different woods didn't seem to work for me.

However, its not the visuals that matter with this level. The gameplay is great, even brilliant sometimes. With some simple but fun gameplay ideas the level really does shine, and got me thinking of the old days of simple LBP platforming. Even the rotating sponges got me thinking about the Canyons levels!

The level is made up of very fun gameplay sections. A particular favourite bit of mine was the ledge building through the creatinator. While it was frustrating it was very very fun. I loved the level, and would love for feedback on my own level https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=89879-Spelunker-Bunker
