A Question on the Reliability of Level Links

Archive: 15 posts

Hello there, I have a question about level links.

With the recent announcement of LBP3 I was reminded how much I loved this game so I got back into creating stuff.

Anyways, I often see things in levels warning you about how the level link may not work or certain things you have to do to get it working. (For example: in LBPC's spotlight level they have tell you to 'Retry' is level is locked)

This has me worried about my level which is split in two. 1 main level and another sublevel.

Should I just make them two separate levels? Or are my worries about level links nonsense?

Bottom line:
How reliable are level links? (which are activated by a sensor switch, if that makes a difference)

Hmm that is a tricky question and depending of the creator they might give you different answers. I've never had a single problem with level links, but if they are activated with a switch, there are times where the link won't activate and the player gets stuck in the first level. Or at times the player can be explused to their Pods during a level linking. This usually only happens if the second level fails to load because of extreme complexity, and I'd tell you go for it, but it is your call 2014-07-17 02:09:00

Thanks. I've resolved with putting a memorizer in my level to immediately spawn a manually activated level link.2014-07-17 05:01:00

In my experience, level links never work on multiplayer. I've played a few levels with locked level links but they're only at the end linking to an unrelated level so it might be locked on purpose. They seem to work fine on levels I've created, except of course with online multiplayer.2014-07-17 16:00:00

I am concerned too about my new almost-released level. I got carried away with the sublevel and maybe made it to complicated. Are their any tricks I should know to ensure a working link?2014-07-18 20:35:00

I can't remember having a problem with links that take you to a sub level. Come to think of it, maybe I have lost an on line party member once or twice. I think they usually work. I wonder if the issue with central's hub is that there are so many links. I always see locks when I go there.2014-07-19 19:16:00

I too have only had problems with multiplayer. I rarely lose party members but it does happen sometimes. The only other problems I've encountered are faults of the creator, not the level link.2014-07-20 09:45:00

I'd say, go for it! Use them in your level. Oddly, I never had a problems with level links. If you activate them with a switch, it should work. And if they're locked, just tell the player to pop themselves. If it's a multiplayer level, don't overheat the sublevel, because if other players can't load the level, they can't join again. Hope this helps 2014-07-25 10:34:00

When ever there is a level link, it seems 90% of the time, I lose my party members.2014-07-26 00:33:00

Yeah level links seem troublesome especially when you are playing with online parties...2014-07-26 18:50:00

The more complex the second level is, the bigger the chance is that you will lose party members, and if the complexity manages to reach a certain level then you yourself as the host may crash

So beware with complexity, imho I would try to split the level even further for safety

I have experienced no issues with level links in the three years I have played and my level uses stupid amounts of data. But it is a single player experience. I have heard cases of friends being disconnected during level links, but I personally never encountered it.

Safe thing to do is just test. I will say spliting the level up amiel suggested is a great recommendation. When a level gets too complex, you will get random freezes and thats never fun.

Good luck.

Generally the higher the thermometer is for the level your linking to means longer loading time, and the other players with you disconnecting.
Although, interesting that the story/DLC level links always load fast and nobody disconnects...

So in short, it's not the level link that causes the issue but rather downloading the next level that causes disconnections. And as for the the story/DLC levels - you already have the levels downloaded. That's what the patches are for. No one should have any trouble in story mode because of this. Though sometimes you still have the random issue of a person getting lost.2014-07-29 09:00:00
