What's the best game you've ever played?

Archive: 18 posts

I couldn't find another similar thread and this seemed the right forum to ask you guys: What's the very best game you've ever played, for any console, and why? Whether that reason is simply because it brings back memories or because you found the game perfectly designed. If you want to include any anecdotes that would be cool as well!2014-07-16 03:00:00

The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Why it's awesome: It was the first (or one of the first) games of its kind. You could explore every corner of the world at any time, find powerful items, and even do the dungeons out of order. It was essentially the Skyrim of its day. Yeah yeah, so the zelda games (kind of) improved over the years, but this game is what set the bar for all open world adventure games, and that's why it's the greatest game of all time.

Silent Hill 2

The story, the atmosphere. An experience I have not come across often.

For some reason or another The Last of Us captivated me and grabbed my attention to the max. I just would love to have a fully fledged survival game like that, which is one of the reasons I'm so hyped for The Division. Other then that there is always this beauty...

Well, I'm going to go with the obvious choice:
LBP2

If I had to chose another I'd say Skyrim or Teltale's The Walking Dead Game [season 1].
In saying that, Pokemon Sapphire, Hulk [2003] and Red Dead Revolver are the classics of my youth.

Half Life series, No first person shooter has ever pulled me into the world like this series did. I really hope Half Life 3 comes out soon...2014-07-29 22:28:00

If I absolutely have to pick a favorite game among my long list of retro and new....FF7. I reckognize it doesn't hold up well today at all. It's ugly as a pig but it's so nostalgic. It was a massive and immersive game.2014-07-29 23:03:00

For me it may be obvious because of my profile image, but Persona 4 was one of the best experiences I've had with a game in a long time. The story was captivating, the characters were all likable, the combat was great, and my god the music. Shoji Meguro, you insanely brilliant man and your amazing tunes. I also liked the themes the game covered, as I've never seen a game before mention or talk about social problems as this game did. Shoutout to Persona 4 Arena for being an awesome fighting game and a great continuation of the story.2014-07-29 23:39:00

I don't just have one, but I have a couple.

1) Saints Row 2: Takes the GTA formula and brings it to the next level. You got an awesome story with a customized character and... I just can't bring this game to justice with only words. The first game in the series is cool too, but I have to give it to SR2.

Any game that let's me dress up as a Grey alien while having serious scenes or gameplay is just awesome.

Plus having my own home/base that I can customize was cool too.

2) RockBand Series: Yeah, I know it's supposed to be just one game, but the RockBand series is another favorite of mine. I just liked the feeling of "playing" music that you enjoyed. Plus the weekly DLC was also fun (but also a bit disappointing). Every week you would hope either your favorite band or favorite song would be released as DLC and when it was... Oh man, I'm sad Harmonix ended this. The developers were pretty involved with the community too.

3) The Sim 2: So much customization, so many stories, and mods! I can't tell you how much I loved The Sims. I really hate what EA is doing to them now (especially with The Sims 4 being a rip off (no pools and no toddler stages in the vanilla game)).

I'll see if I can think of anymore, but those are my three picks.

All your words make me eager to play some games! Specially Persona I have no idea what that game is about but it is getting a lot of positive reviews throughout the web!

My personal favorite is Zero Escape Volume 1: 9 persons, 9 hours, 9 doors and Zero Escape Volume 2: Virtue's Last Reward. I have never played nor I think I'll ever play again such great games! Awesome puzzles, great artwork but specially the amazing soundtrack and the INCREDIBLE storytelling. So sad it is more of a hidden gem than anything so it gets little publicity. You guys should check 'em out!

It's hard to find a PERFECT game, so I'm just going to list four games that I love a ton, in no particular order.

1: LBP2
Do I really need to explain this one that much? As much as I think that LBP1's story, music, and just a lot of things in general are better than LBP2's, LBP2 is just a better game.

2: The Sly series (mostly 2 and 4)
Oh man. I LOVE the Sly series. Every game in it is VERY well made, but I think the best games in the series are 2 and 4. The platforming, visual style and music in these games are some of the best I've ever experienced.

3: Red Dead Redemption
RDR is fantastic. It looks nice, has great music, and it's also one of the few third person/first person games where I actually enjoy the gunplay. The best thing about RDR has to be the story though. I'm not going to go into detail, but HOLY CRAP the story is so good.

4: Super Smash Bros. Melee
I've been getting into competitive Smash recently, and my game of choice from the series is Melee. For a casual player, Brawl is the more popular choice, since it's new, and that's perfectly fine. But for competitive play, Melee is a lot deeper than brawl, with all of it's advanced techniques that you have to learn and master. And if you add that on to the fact that the game can be played in multiple different ways, it's incredible. If I had to pick the most "perfect" game out of my list, I'd have to go with Melee, since the amount of depth it has is truely amazing. ESPECIALLY when you realize that's it's a Gamecube game.

In terms of engaging story line: The last of us.
In terms of replayability and lasting experience: LBP2.

Overall though, the game I have to mention would be Fire Emblem 8 for the gameboy advance.
Few games have rung with me like the fire emblem games, and this one more than any I found compelling. The story was immersive. The gameplay was strategic not only stage to stage, but strategic in what characters you trained, what items you used, how you spent your money. It was an RPG in which the role you played was every individual of a small army.

Heck, even the animations and soundtrack were fantastic. Some of the best of the time in my opinion.

So I choose fire emblem 8, which, consequently has largely influenced my creating.

I'm pretty big on 2 franchises and I think people might of guessed it. Super Smash bros and Ratchet and Clank. If I have to choose between the 2...Smash bros. And my favorite from that franchise would have to be melee with the 64 as a close second. Hopefully the new smash game might be my new favorite.2014-08-01 22:23:00

Currently, I'm tempted to say God Hand. It's one of the most criminally underrated games of all time, partially due to one of the most poorly written reviews of all time (thanks IGN!). Everything about the combat system is incredibly fluid and fun, and the dynamically scaling difficulty is a blast. That and it's also hilarious and the music is great.

The level design is minimal at best and it's undoubtedly a stupid storywise, but it is just a blast. I'm not even finished and I can say it's some of the most fun I've ever had. Check it out on PSN for $10.

Also, this is good at demonstrating how great it is:

Goat Simulator. The story made me cry. So touching.
Personally, my best game as in the one I have enjoyed most is CoD:4. I play competitive CoD, and that's where my journey started, and I enjoyed my time there the most, so for me, its the best game I have ever played.

Going system by system...:

Sega Genesis/Mega Drive - Sonic & Knuckles: Released before and what probably marked the beginning of Sonic the Hedgehog's fall into mediocrity, this game is probably the crown jewel of the franchise. It had incredible variety in the level design and gameplay therein, a grander scope than any of the previous games and if you got all the emeralds and unlocked the true last level you got treated to an epic final battle. The fact that you could hook up Sonic 3 to make both games play like one long odyssey made it even better.

PS1 - Suikoden II: The second game in Konami's largely neglected Suikoden franchise, it also happens to be the best and of all the rpgs I have on the PS1 this one has easily aged the best as well. This is because beneath the fantasy elements it's a story that resonates with the human experience; you are not saving the world from some mad god or invaders from another dimension, rather you are caught in the middle of a generations old conflict between two nation states brought about by all to common past grievances. While there are very notable supernatural elements, they aren't the crux of the plot; rather they are set pieces that serve as the backdrop to a very character driven story. It does have some notable bugs and translation errors/oversights, but just about everyone who's played the game remembers it fondly and anyone who has a copy of the original disc (like myself) covets it heavily; hence why most copies being sold online have such a high price tag for a PSX game. That said, with any luck we may see a PSN release in the future.

PS2 - Shadow of the Colossus: A game that plays and is presented very much unlike most video games out there. You have one objective: vanquish 16 colossi on the off chance that doing so will resurrect a cursed maiden. The plot and gameplay, at a glance seems incredibly shallow yet the minimalist story and setting creates for an oddly intriguing and compelling narrative. Also, while the only enemies in the game are the colossi each is a unique experience and their scale and design creates for one epic battle after another and instead of some BS arbitrary time wasting minor enemies, what lies between you and the next giant to vanquish is a lush and beautiful microcosm of a world to traverse and a magnificent steed to carry you (when it's actually not serving as your partner in combat). Also notable is that the soundtrack is of legendary quality, and I mean that without any exaggeration; there isn't a single bad song in it and the sheer variety of themes really help set the tone at every moment.

PS3 - Dark Souls: Dark Souls is a very different game for it's era; it's not a game that provides immediate gratification, nor is it a game that gives you a sense of empowerment or a rush of endorphins through cinematic setpieces. No, it is a game that, upon being played will give you everything you need to succeed but will absolutely make you earn it. It is a game that will give you no mercy and brutally punish you for your own foolishness while in contrast rewards the methodical and meticulous. The game's tagline "Prepare to Die" is very appropriate but moreso is the rush and satisfaction that comes from not only surviving but triumphing over what the game throws at you. Like Shadow of the Colossus, Dark Souls too has a very minimalist story and setting; but in Dark Soul's case, like it's gameplay, demands attention for detail rather than having your hand held but doing so reveals a far more intricate tapestry then what is seen at a glance.

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy(PC) (the xbox version is terrible)
Normal games have you stuck on the ground pressing one or two buttons to do attacks, limited movement, and the attacks look poor/lazy or make presumptions on the part of the opponent(animations where you stick your weapon through your opponent or something and they have no control, WHICH IS TERRIBLE AND NEEDS TO STOP BEING PUT INTO GAMES)
but in Jedi Academy the combat is 3-dimensional, being able to jump high into the air and run on walls with complete control over your character. Rather than just pressing one button to do the same series of attacks over and over again (looking at you every rpg ever) this game has many different moves depending on the direction you attack in and how you chain your attacks. The combat looks simple to people who just picked up the game to where they think it's just about spamming the attack button but offers more control and depth than any other game I can think of once you get good at it. One of, if not /the/ best star wars game made to date.
The game was made in 2003 and still has an active online community, same thing with it's precursor Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast

The Souls series(Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2)
The series image of being hard is an over-exaggeration by people who are aren't good(or are more casual in general), the game is easy but NG+ is a nice challenge. Pvp is the main reason to play these games. If you're not pvp'ing in these games, you're not really playing these games.
