Are "Team Picks" fair?

Archive: 15 posts

Hi all,

Just like to begin by saying in NO WAY am I saying the levels picked are undeserved. The levels picked our of outstanding quality, and deserve that extra bit of attention. However, is it fair that some creators get 4 or 5 Team Picks? Yes, they have earned them and deserve all the praise hey get, sometimes even more praise, but when only a few levels are picked each week, to see the same names pop up, it makes me wonder how unknown creators stand a chance past creators who produce great quality levels, but already have a large amount of Team Picks.

A few months back, I saw a creator who'd published 7 or 8 levels, but had 5 or 6 Team Picks. There levels were some of the best I have seen, but having roughly 3/4 of your levels Team Picked is a little too much, no? some creators I see have the most innovative levels, perfect designed, but slightly weaker to levels by "popular" creators. The "popular" creators are the ones for get the Team Picks, and sometimes lesser known get them. Like I say, they are deserved, but maybe a better system should be designed, like Creators as a whole can be picked?

Once again, all team picks are fully deserved, I just feel when only a few levels get picked each week or whatever it is, is it fair to give someone their 4th Pick, instead of giving someone their 1st?

That's why when given the choice of featuring a relatively unknown creator or a creator with a previous Team Pick, I will generally choose to showcase the unknown creator's level first and reserve the known creator's level for another week. (Remember! That level is still awesome and needs to be seen by the community sometime!)

The only real exception to the rule is when a known creator publishes a level that's just absolutely mind-blowing and never seen before in LittleBigPlanet, in which case I will aim to get it featured sooner so that the rest of the community can see it asap.

When threads like this pop up we generally have the same advice for creators: promote, promote, promote!

If you are unknown and want to get noticed, you need to tell other people who and what you've done...you can't just expect us to find you. Many previously unknown creators now have big pink ribbons on their planets, so there's really no reason a great level show go unnoticed.

On this site there are two really great ways to get a level noticed; if it's your level, you can submit it to the Level Showcase (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?40-Level-Showcase) and have it played by our dedicated Spotlight team.

If it's not your level, we have a forum called Recommendations (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?56-Recommendations) where you can put in a good word for a level that you think deserves more plays.

Either way, it's always best to make an effort to inform users about the level you're submitting... be descriptive in your post and be sure to include as many great looking pictures as you can.

It all depends on the creators. There are some people with 5 picks that I would never have picked a single level by them Myself. And there are some with none that Id have picked 5 from. And then there are some with 5 that I'd pick all 5 Myself. I don't think the system goes too bad, but I like the idea of as Creator spotlight. Of course this is my viewpoint, and being someone with a few picks under his belt it's probably a bit biased.2014-07-12 00:01:00

I feel they are pretty fair. Steven does a great job, but it's HIS pick and he may not really get to play as many and much as he might like.

To put it in perspective... As much as I enjoyed one day waking up to find my inbox filled with the "congrats on the pink ribbon" messages, I still cherish and am honored by all the LBPC Spotlights I have gotten. Actually a few of those I am more happy and proud of than the picked one. lol

I agree with Chazprime. I think unknown creators have to find a way to promote themselves. There are over 8 million levels in LBP2 and its pretty hard for one guy to choose from those. And time consuming. I tried playing through community levels and it does take a lot of time.

I have not published a level yet, but the hearts I do have just came from strictly promotion. I just uploaded pictures and people started following my project and thats when it was barely playable.

My point is, if you put a lot of work into a project, you should also invest a good amount of time promoting it. Make a poster, get involved with the community, play for play, submit it for reviews, and try to get in one of the LBPC spotlights. If your level gets enough buz and its good enough, it will get Team Picked. Just make sure its good and different from the others.

Thats my belief anyway. I personally think the pics have been getting better.

On a side note, didnt we just have this topic?

Yes... the topic comes up quite a lot. lol

..and yup, you have to promote your levels. Best way is to use the tools here by creating a really good level thread with a great description, photos as well as using the F4F feature and be proactive with it. That being, going out and playing other F4F levels, leaving constructive heartfelt feedback and then tell them which of your levels to return the favor and complete the F4F commitment. You can get a ton of great feedback this way to make the level better and also learn how to be a better creator. It also helps you build a network of like minded and skilled creators which is very helpful when creating a level or bounce ideas off of, or just to ask what they think of this or that, for example a small section or puzzle bit.

It takes a ton of practice, patience and work... but it is possible.

Steven does a great job, but it's HIS pick...

I always learned there was no (Steven-)i in Team.

Had to do it, sorry.

I don't know if you saw my comment in the other thread, but I mentioned it might be good to have picked creators, as well as picked levels. So instead of picking every brilliant (for example) yu-kamone level, you would Team Pick him/her, and there would be a separate area for picked creators. That way, more less known creators would get their time in the sun, whilst the consistently good creators would still get their levels recognised.

StevenI, I completely understand your view, but my point is that the well known creators with multiple picks still get them, taking up a slot for that week (or however long the time periods are). In my eyes, that's 1 less unknown creator who's getting promoted. However, there levels are deserved, and the amazing creators out there put lots of time in there levels, so it would be quite unfair on them to not give them praise.

But thanks very much for the reply StevenI, your doing a fantastic job too.

What I dont get is, we have several topics like this already. Why isnt the portion of the community that is concerned with this particular issue, knocking on StevenI's door and promoting these unknown levels? Why is all this solely StevenI's fault? Again, there are a lot of great levels, but he looks for the ones that does something different and innovative. And thats hard to do with so many levels being published. Its impossible to notice of all them.

We also done the math and there are more new creators being picked than older ones.

Ultimately, this one mans opinion. This is in the same realm, unfair to a creator like yu-kamone or emerging popular creators like Rialress who are putting in hard work and earning multiple picks. Just because one of their older projects got picked, shouldnt stop their new levels from being promoted in the same light. Its almost saying they dont deserve it and they are getting picked based on popularity and not the endless grueling hours they spent trying to give us great experiences. I am not implying you are saying that, but sometimes these topics feel like an underhanded shot at popular creators.

Well put! Where are these huge vats of amazing unknown levels? Quite a few that he sees are from our very own Community Spotlight. I'm sure he also visits other similar picks from other fan sites, but if they are unknown... who are they and where are they?

Best bet... have them join our site and put them in the Showcase. The rest will take care of itself, that is if Steven feels they are truly worthy.
