Need some clarification/hope (Save file to big)

Archive: 5 posts

yeah i know this has been talked to death but just wanted a clarification on it.

So I though this only happened when you had to many items in the popit menu for it to load...but to my horrible surprise I found out that its when the save file itself becomes to big. So after some reading I found that all save files in games have a certain amount of space that it is allowed to take up, which makes sense in a world when we only had limited space on a memory card but since I can download demos that are over 1.2 gigabytes (Killzone 2) I think we should be able to give the right amount of space for a save file.

So correct me if I'm wrong but I have a moon with about 30+ levels I can build on and with the current system I will never be able to make levels on them all? If Sony really wants this to be the big hitter they hope it will be then they need to stop putting constrictions like this on it, and why did MM make the game with all this space that cant be used which only just makes the player frustrated. Does anyone know of anything in the works that might address this because I'm sick of creating a big part of my new level and then have the pop-up saying i need to delete stuff when all i have left in my popit is the "extra" thin layer no community items no pictures no custom textures no customs nothing and I still get the prompt. I had to delete some levels that I was working on to save my current one. So I really hope that MM and Sony are in a room figuring out how to let the players choose how much memory they will give the game to save data.

Well it all boils down to the netcode...me thinks. Your save game is your profile. Your profile needs to be a certain size or smaller because the entire thing gets loaded when you join a friend or play online. Any larger and the system starts to turn to goo. The best advice anyone will offer you is to publish your levels and delete them off your moon. You do have 20 slots online and that's quite a bit of space. Technically you can have as many levels as you want...if you are backing up your save data to another location. I occasionally load old profiles with old levels I never published to show a friend or something. But all in all, don't hold your breath waiting for a larger profile, because unless MM makes it a top priority I doubt we'll see any changes any time soon. Personally, I think it's amazing how much data gets crammed into that tiny profile space.2009-02-19 06:10:00

Good awnser Jeayden. One point, although I don't think it's gonna happen. The levels on your moon do not need to be loaded online to other players. Those could be saved on your hard drive only, This way you could fill up your moon.2009-02-19 07:43:00

Jaeyden you make a good point about how the profile loads which is why they need them to be small, and to just send your current levels to your online space. I have no problem keeping my popit clean which I think is the main thing that loads when you play with other players but my problem is with the fact that my moon is affected. I think what Wyth said is what I am thinking and it makes me sad that you guys don't think they will change anything, but here's to hoping.2009-02-19 15:00:00

Actually it's similar to what you described but Sam once posted how it works:

-You save file kinda is having "partitions" if you want. Only a certain part of the save file is loaded when you join another player.

While I doubt the overall save space will ever grow, it's really bad game design on MM part to not make your space limits clear.
If from the start people would have seen the exact number of levels they could save on the moon by counting the craters, could have counted the number of costumes that it's possible to save (by some visual cue) and could count the number of object and picture in the same way, there would simply be no complaining. I mean, next to none.
