Rumour: Firmware 2.7 Leaked Details

Archive: 14 posts

A guy claiming to have a friend at Sony posted these on the GT boards.

Friends List:
- Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
- Home Integration: Saved Playstation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
- Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.

Gamer Card & Trophies:
- Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
- Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
- Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
- Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.

In-Game XMB:
- Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seemless in-game experience.
- "Theme settings" options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
- Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
- Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
- Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.

Misc:
- Other slight UI tweaks and enhancements.

Fantastic news if this is true.

Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.

That would be cool. My friend keeps saying this should add this and I told him it would probably never happen lol. Here's to hoping all this info is true.

It's a feature that should be standard in every online gaming system that supports headsets and a friends list, to be honest. If this is true, I'm surprised it took them this long to realize that.

It's mainly because MS holds too many freaking redonkulous patents about interface and everything, which is why Sony takes longer because they have to find away around these patents.

Like the custom soundtrack option. The reason why it doesn't work with all games is because it would be in violation of MS's patent on the subject. By making it optional and making it a developer choice means they bypass the patent.

Obstructive patenting is the norm in any hyper-competitive business. Microsoft probably patents 3-4 times the number of features that are actually implemented, but by doing so they prevent competitors from implementing a same or very similar feature. This isn't new to business; a business that wants to be on top will develop and patent ideas far before they are planned for implementation. I'd understand this gap in implementation if the PS3 had patented features that the Xbox 360 completely lacked, but so far I haven't seen anything equally as compelling. More than anything, this just displays Sony's lack of foresight and preparation. At least Sony realizes what gamers really want, even if it means mimicking the competitor.

Wow that's alot of thing. That would sound more like an update i'd call 3.0 or something.
I'll take this with a grain of salt. If this happens this will be funny though. I know people that won't have much reasons left to pay for Xbox live...

This isn't an Xbox/Ps3 debate...
Seems every thread about Xbox or Ps3 turns into one..
*Rant over*

Using the internet browser during game will be very useful I think. Also the voice messaging will be oodles of fun

I don't think there's a lack of foresight in the slightest; Microsoft beat Sony to the punch on a lot of things, supposedly stole technology that Sony had paid IBM to develop on the road to the cell microprocessor, and won the race to the market. It's just too bad that more gamers don't demand a quality piece of hardware rather than being satisfied with something as gimmicky as cross-game chat...

And I'm not sure I buy the whole patent thing anyway. As the PS3 and 360 are of completely different architectural designs, why would Sony have a tough time finding a way to implement in-game custom soundtracks across the board? They're different systems altogether! That would essentially be like Microsoft patenting the "Autoplay" feature in XP and pointing to Mac and saying, "You can't do this because we've already locked that idea down!" Wrong. It's a completely different OS and the programming isn't identical in the slightest. That said, I'll put my blame about custom soundtracks squarely on Sony's shoulders. However, you can't please everyone, right?

Kudos to everyone around if these new [to the PS3] features make you happy; guess I'm just stuck in last-generation gaming mode playing single-player campaigns, sending text messages to my friends, and ringing them up on the phone when I want chat.

I could see the voice chat interesting in order to communicate with my family though.

My brother is a gamer quite as much as me and we aren't necessarily playing the same games at the same time. Could be nice to talk when we are online regardless what we are playing. Phone calls are expensive.

Because Microsoft became the owners when they decided to use the feature themselves??
I'm pretty sure somebody done it way before Microsoft o_0 therefore it was copied from them.. not Microsoft..
