General Level Design Tips?

Archive: 6 posts

Hey guys.
I was wondering, does anyone have any general tips on level design, i.e. how to create a detailed scene? I've always wondered how people create levels with lots of scenery and atmosphere.

I've seen some good ones in the tutorial section. The stickied index should help you find them: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=46908-LittleBigPlanet-2-Tutorials-and-Games2014-07-01 13:03:00

Mainly, just plan it out in your head, and put in the effort and patience required to make a level look good, as long as you put in the effort and know how to do what you want to do then you are fine (if you don't know how to do something certain you have in mind, then at that point I would seek help) mainly its about creativity, and understanding the creation system in LBP

Ideas + Effort = Design

There were community made level tutorials on adding detail and other things. It was so long ago I forgot who made them and what they were called. I believe it was a swamp/jungle theme. Does anyone here remember? I would suggest giving those a look.2014-07-01 19:47:00

I used to have a tutorial on how to use decorations that I deleted, but I put it up on my secondary account Tynz22. It's not what you're thinking of, but you reminded me.

Hey guys.
I was wondering, does anyone have any general tips on level design, i.e. how to create a detailed scene? I've always wondered how people create levels with lots of scenery and atmosphere.

1. Study good levels. Part of learning to be successful is learning what worked for other creators. This will also help with ideas
2. Pick a theme. Good atmosphere are created by a consistent theme and less about how good the art actually is. If you are making a Halloween level, put things in there like skulls, appropriate music, darker tone etc.
3. Draw it out/ plan. Make a plan. Obviously this will conflict with certain authors, but you cant go wrong with a plan. Part of that great atmosphere you are talking about comes from planning what elements are thrown at the player and in what order.
4. Sometimes less is more. You dont need to make Chree's midgar to have a detailed scene. Just place enough detail to evoke the mood you want.
5. Find constructive criticism. Not being optimistic about improving your level will cripple your development as a creator. We should always be seeking to improve.
6. Learn Pacing. It can make or break a level. Watch videos on game design and you will learn a lot.
