Turret Overlord

This is a Tower Defense level. So let's cut to the chase about explaining this.

You can control a turret, that is the most powerful weapon in the game. However you still need help. You can deploy 2 types of solders. Green and Yellow. Green soldiers hold 1 gun and aims. Yellow soldiers can wield 2 and fire rates are quicker and even shoot both lanes which I'll get to that. They can't aim though. You can deploy the soldiers with these red spawners that turn blue to let you know you can afford soldiers. The spawners have a color to represent what they will spawn in. Green for green soldiers and yellow for yellow soldiers. Some soldiers can help you take down enemies that your turrent can't turn to. You can deploy a limit of 10 soldiers. 8 green soldiers and 2 yellow soldiers.

Now lets talk about the lanes and enemies. Enemies will take one of the 2 paths. You and your soldiers need to take them out before they reach your area. There are 2 types of enemies. Red takes 3 hits to kill while blue takes 5. The difference between hp is a strong difference that they can still pass through 4 green soldiers (4 greens in a lane and 2 yellows between the lanes) so make sure you can take them down as well.

Lets get to the levels. The levels technically are not levels. They just tell you the difficulty. As you are trying to deploy all 10 soldiers, enemies will come more often to a point that blues can come in pairs and show up a lot more often than reds. There are 4 levels. 1 is basic and easy where you start off with some points to buy any 2 soldiers. 2 will send in more enemies and you should have a little more defense. 3 is blues come out more often and your defense should be decent. 4 is when blues can sometimes come in pairs making 1 blue a target and the other is a shield for soldiers. You should be almost complete with deploying all 10 soldiers by then.

Points can be earned in 2 ways. Defeat enemies. Red is worth 50 and blue is worth 80. You can also earn points by turning off your turret but you will slowly earn those points.

Back to your turret. You can control your turret in 2 ways. You can use the slider from the touch screen for turning faster or use your analog for more precise aiming. The turret has a button right beside the slider. Tap it to have your turret shooting.

This game will be played in a portrait view.

Sorry if I made any typos. I'm using my phone because my laptop is broken.

At first I was going to complain about the layout of this forum post, but then I read you used your phone so I can't complain. But anyways I just played it up, and I have to say I'm fairly impressed with it. I enjoy a good tower defense game and that's what you delivered.

Summary:
Well I went into your level expecting a generic tower defense game, knowing nothing other than it has a turret, because I was too lazy to read your post before I played the level, I was pleasantly surprised with the game you delivered. Its a different take on tower defense where you don't just sit and watch the whole time.

Graphics: 3.5/5

Well these weren't the best graphics in the world, they didn't really need to be. The map was kinda of bland, and the units weren't revolutionary, the design was fitting for a tower defense game. And its probably a good thing do to the lag in this level. The turret design really stood out and looked well.

Gameplay: 4/5
It was pretty fun from the get go. Forget what you know about traditional Tower Defense games, this one involves the player actively in the game. Controlling a turret was done well, with a slider on the touch screen, and a button to toggle the shooting action of it. My only complaint is the game focused so much on the turret that the managing of "towers" on the map took the backseat. I feel to really be great, the level would need a way to micro manage the towers, by provide upgrades, and more variety of units. Perhaps even being able to upgrade your turret to fit specific play styles.

Story/Objective: 3.5/5
While the objective for Tower Defense games is usually pretty simple, this game did nothing out of the ordinary to extend beyond the classic TD mold. (Don't getting me wrong there's nothing wrong with that, its just nothing was really ground breaking.)

Overall: 3.66/5
While this isn't the best of the best Tower Defense games, it certainly is refreshing to play. Giving the player involvement into it was a great idea, I just wish there was more of it. I'm hoping for a follow up on this level someday, because this has the potential to be a great tower defense game.

Also, maybe its just me, but I felt like the tutorial was just shoehorned in. Perhaps a title screen that has play and tutorial buttons would be good.

Thanks for the review. I enjoyed working on it although this did crash my vita a couple times. I'll put a sequel in my bucket list and maybe have the enemies go through some directions.

I do agree with the graphics but I think it resembles a type of cartoonish look I was going for. (Still better than Balloon Tower Defense look imo)

As for a story, lots of tower defenses don't really have one so imo there is no point of having one unless it includes it.

I do respect your review and opinions. Thanks for playing!

Edit: I was hoping the turret stood out. After all, the turret and it's features like the button and slider matches your popit color.
