DV's Level Contest #3 - Triple Trouble

DVLC3: Triple Trouble

Aah, the joy of playing with others in LBP. Whether we're working together or fighting against each other, there has been a lot of fun had with my nice circle of friends on Craftworld, but sometimes levels geared towards 2 players can still feel a bit lonesome, whereas 4 player-focused levels can just get too hectic. What about that number in the middle, 3? It's still relatively easy for me to round up a couple friends, and... and.. oh! Why hello there! My name is Dragonvarsity, and welcome to the third entry in this lovely series of contests which I've had a ton of fun hosting. I thought I'd mix things up this time around, going from thematic requirements like sand and food, to a theme based around a gameplay mechanic instead. Let's hop right into it:

http://i.imgur.com/rpNIBLW.png?1

Theme:

The theme/basic requirements for DVLC3 is to create a level focused on three players, whether they're working together or against each other, in a minigame or in a standard level. So not a 2-player level that allows for a 3rd player to hop in, and not a 4-player level that can be played with just 3 thanks to special cheat codes, but a level built mainly for 3 players. So, because the focus has shifted towards a type of gameplay style for this level contest, you'll be able to choose whatever theme you want, may it be set in a frozen tundra, tropical jungles, or what have you. Now, this is a tricky kind of theme, so I'll throw a few ideas to help get people's creative juices flowing, if they haven't already. Uhh... maybe a level where you play as a trio of robots trying to escape from some puzzle-filled lab, grabbing electricity and powering each other up to stay on? Or perhaps a level where 2 players assume the role of parents working together against a menacing baby played by the third player? Oor maybe each of the three players are trapped in different time periods and must work together through a communication system to all reach the present era again? It's a pretty niche theme, I know, but I think there could be some great results from it.

Prizes for winning:
1. $20.00 PSN code. (U.S. only, apologies to those outside my region)
2. A fancy in-depth creator interview with pictures and level links. (Like so (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=89452-DVLC2-Creator-Interview-bonner123).)
3. Top spot in a level hub created to compile all of the contest's entries.
4. ..The sense of accomplishment from having won? Oh, and bragging rights too, I guess.

Note: If someone who's won a DVLC wins another, then they will still be able to receive all of the above prizes aside from the creator interview.

So, as I said, the PSN card I have up as part of the prize is region-locked to my nation, the U.S., so it wouldn't work for someone outside the U.S. sadly. Nevertheless, if the winner is outside the U.S, then I'll still be happy to go out and buy the card and then send the winner said region-locked code. Maybe they have a friend or someone else they know who lives inside the U.S? Or perhaps they're in cahoots with a not-so-shady business dealer who can swap codes of their region? Just know that while I try to buy the PSN card for the winner right after the judging is over, they could still expire at some point if they aren't put onto a Playstation system after a while. So just be warned!
Everyone who enters in general will still get their entrees (hopefully) recorded and uploaded to my youtube channel (provided they aren't excruciatingly difficult for my puny lack of ninja skills), plus their levels will be showcased in the contest hub that I create. (Also other good stuff like learning from your experiences and being a part of this all and blah blah blah.) Which reminds me, I still need to record some of the levels for my previous contest... er..

Rules for Entering:
Your level must be new, as in you cannot enter a previously published work. It must be created and submitted in LBP2 and contain "(DVLC3)" in the title, and it must be published within the entry window, which is between July 15th and 11:59 PM EST on Wednesday, July 23rd (the deadline for this contest). All entries submitted after the deadline will be disqualified.
The level must also include gameplay, meaning that it can't be a movie. Cutscenes are allowed for it of course, but there should still be a fair amount of playable portions included.
I should be able to play through each level entry without needing a PS Move or PS Vita as a controller, as I own neither. To reiterate, every level entered must be playable using the PS3’s standard controller.
Only one level may be submitted per creator, and your level may only include one level slot. That means no use of level links to add additional thermo to your entry.
Once your level has been published, make sure to notify me through this thread on LBPCentral or the one on the Sackinima forums. Also, make sure to provide a link to your level's lbp.me page, just in case the search filters mess up when it’s time for me to judge everything.
You may republish your level at any point during the entry window (a.k.a. between July 15th and the deadline) but DO NOT republish after the deadline. Any level republished after this point will be disqualified, unless of course you need to fix a huge game-breaking bug or small details regarding the level title, description, or badge. If this is the case, then make sure to tell me this by posting through the thread or sending me a PM, then wait for my approval before republishing. (Once judging is over and the winner's been announced, feel free to make any changes of course. You can even take "(DVLC3)" out of the level title, if you want.)
Please respect the creators you are competing with, and the decisions that I make when judging everything. This is supposed to be a fun community event, and just know that I plan to do more of these types of contests in the future.

While that should cover the basics, I imagine many other questions might come up from those who may be interested in entering. Because of this, here is the handy dandy PAQ:

Q: Am I allowed to enter a previously published level?
A: No. As I said in the rules, all levels entered must be first published during the entry window.

Q: Can I enter a level I already have on my moon, but has yet to be published?
A: Yes. That’s definitely allowed.

Q: But couldn’t that give me an unfair advantage in the competition?
A: That’s one way of looking at it, but clearly you’d still need to put the effort in to make it look good. Besides, there’s no way I could figure out if you started making a level that fits the bill of the contest ages ago, and there’s really no point anyway.

Q: Are there certain DLC kits I’m not allowed to use when entering?
A: Nope, use whatever DLC kit you’d like when crafting your entry, so long as it doesn’t require that I use the Movinator, the Brain Crane, or the Vitanator, as I don't own a PS Move, nor do I own a PS Vita. Other tools from the 'PS Move'/'Cross-Controller' kits that don't require other controllers, (e.g. wormholes) are fine to use.

Q: You said that levels entered for DVLC3 should be focused on 3 players. Could I make a 3 player-focused level that can still be playable with a fourth character?
A: Sure, just like a lot of 2-player co-op levels in LBP can have additional players. So basically, you can create a level that can only be played by 3 players, or a level that requires at least 3 players, but also allows a fourth one to hop in. However, brownie points will be awarded to creative uses of the 3-player theme.

Q: Am I allowed to receive assistance from other creators for my entry?
A: Yes, and even if that wasn’t okay, there’s no way I could monitor your creating activity anyway. However, if you do decide to work with others in designing an entry, please note that the prize(s) will be awarded to only one person. Decide upon who will receive the prize(s) if your entry wins and tell me this user’s name either through a private message or through this thread. If argument breaks out and you cannot seem to decide who gets the prize, then I will simply award it to the publisher of the level. Please respect these rules and be careful if you decide to work with others for the contest.

Q: When will the judging start?
A: Proper judging will not begin until after the deadline. Nothing says I can’t look at some of the levels before the deadline, but I won't be looking into them very deeply until judging truly begins.

Q: Well, would you mind giving me some feedback on my entry when it’s been published so I can then republish it before the deadline and have a greater chance of winning?
A: Sorry, that’s not allowed. Asking for feedback from friends or whoever is fine, and taking that feedback to improve your level before the deadline hits is great and certainly strategic. But I am the one person (or one of the people, if other judges are added) who you may not ask for any sort of feedback, given that I am the judge (or one of the judges) for the contest, as well as the host.

Q: When will the results be up?
A: This will vary depending on several factors: The number of entries, how long they all take to complete, and how difficult it will be to pick a winner. Judging every level, making an informed decision and creating the contest HUB/list shouldn't take more than two weeks though (and, if I have a lot of time, probably a lot more quickly than that).

Q: I'm not sure if my level fits the theme. How can I be sure that it fits?
A: Feel free to send me a private message with a bit of information about the ideas for your entry, and I'll do my best to determine if it fits. There shouldn't be too much overthinking with this theme though.

Q: Are we limited to making a basic platformer as an entry for this contest, or can we try out other genres such as RPGs, shooters, survival challenges, or minigames?
A: Sure thing, any and all of those examples work fine, so long as the 3 player-focused theme is followed.

Q: Does the level have to follow a certain length to qualify?
A: Not necessarily, I'm not going to try setting forth a specific time anyhow. With that said, however, when judging, I may end up deducting points from levels for feeling that they are too short for what they offer or drag their substance out too much. Essentially, you can make your level as short or as long as you want and still enter it (assuming you follow the rules and use only one level slot), but a suitable length is a plus. This shouldn't be much of an issue with minigames/survival challenges entered of course, as they typically last only as long as you can in the challenge.

Q: Can you guarantee that you or any other possible judges will finish every level entered, no matter how difficult or dragging they may be?
A: I will do everything I can to complete every level entered, even for those who decide to make it pretty punishing. However, because entrees will require 3 players, it could very well make finishing entries much more difficult (that is, if it's a really difficult platformer). However, we will still do the best we can to finish every level entered, otherwise we can always just demand super special cheat codes from the level author. <3

This seems like a ton of fun. I've only got really dumb ideas so I'll pass on this one or enter a really dumb level, we'll see.

Either way yay more DVLC!

No problem, these have been a ton of fun to host, and I'm real interested to see how creators who decide to enter handle this theme.

Aah okay, well I'm glad you like the theme, and thanks a lot for the promo tweet. ^^

Thanks and good luck, Sandro!

Itt's not like the scenarios have to be as wild as the ones I gave for in the op. You could make a standard co-op adventure like Industrial Assistance (http://lbp.me/v/pvm81k) or Cloudy With a Chance of Teamwork (http://lbp.me/v/r1rbmp), except with 3 players. ^^ (Although brownie points will be awarded for creative uses of the 3-player theme)

As RAWK would say,"AR-PEE-GEE"

Anyways already starting on it though I can sense it'll be pretty short considering the thermo is being a meanie.

Glad to see I got back to LBPC right when you announced your third contest! I've never been good at creating co-op levels but who knows. Either way, I'll ne sure to help with promotion on Twitter! 2014-06-23 11:44:00

Definitely going to jump into this. I needed a theme to work my levels around, it's why I give up on all my projects: 1) I don't have a good theme. 2) The level sucks hardcore.

But, as a UK player, I won't be able to take the $20 PSN card, but would you be able to give the code to the runner up?

Glad you're gonna give it a go, Tyler. Also yes, the winner can do whatever they want with the psn code, may it be using it for themselves, or giving it to a friend/co-creator/runner up/total stranger.

Indeed there will be a next time.

So the deadline is the night of the 23rd, and it shouldn't take me any longer than a week to judge the levels and type up the results post, especially with it being summer and whatnot. Then add some time for the creator interview, and that should put DVLC4 around mid-late August, hopefully.

Just a heads up, today is the final day to publish or republish entries for DVLC3. I'll make sure to update the OP with Dawn and Blah's entries when I get the chance. 2014-07-23 14:55:00
