!_Spotlighted_! Hungry, Hungry, Capybara *Now with Pictures!*

Archive: 39 posts

Hey guys, i decided to take a break from my Ace McSack escapades, and made a cute and fun level for my wife. It is based around a Japanese stuffed animal called Capybara-san, which is my wife's favorite character. its a pretty simple-looking level, but boy howdy was is a tough one to work out.

So... Here is the premise... Capybara-san needs you to find and save her son, Capybara-chan. now this little tyke is always hungry, so you follow his trail of food to find him, get help from the local bees, and finally get him home to his mom. It's a simple level with no enemies, but theres a few simple puzzles, and a few secrets. I did my best to make the scenery look good, and the prizes are made so that if you dont want them, you dont need to get them.

This level was made solely for my wife, but being as i put so much effort into it, i figured i could let it out into the world. please enjoy it, and if you come across any serious bugs, let me know, so i can work them out.

a couple hints: feed the capybara as much as you can to get the good prize!

sometimes you have to help the capybara along, as his little legs and big head make him a bit front-heavy

I will do 10 F4F for constructive feedback, and i'll probably play other's levels and leave feedback as well. Here's hoping you enjoy it!

This level was incredibly cute. You are correct that it is rather simple, but you also have some great details here and there. I'm still thinking about that waterfall. It looked great! I also loved the splashes from the fish and the bits of food spread through out the level. All the puzzle elements were simple and easy to solve, but very charming and cute.

The only issue I ran into was at exit from the caves. I ran to try and push up the door where the Capybara exits, but it squished me. That made me respawn back at the beginning, but I was able to get back to that spot quickly. Maybe you could spread a few checkpoints throughout the level. Not that it's hard, but in case of an accidental squish.

Although I am unfamiliar with the Capybara character, it appears to me that you accomplished what you set out to do. The level is cute and fun to play. How did your wife like it?

She thinks that its one of the cutest levels she's seen, so im happy enough with that. I'll try and throw a few checkpoints in here and there, thanks for the input.

Also, a little more to add about the level, there is actually 2 routes you can use to get through the caves, although one is undeniably cooler than the other.

Here is a question... should i add in a race timer, or would there be anything i can do to increase the level's re-playability?

A race timer might not be a bad idea, but would it be possible to make it optional? In the MGS pack, you can place a sticker on a sticker switch that activates a race timer version of certain levels. I would like that here, simply because timers have a tendency to make me tense up while they tick down and you're level is so fun because it's easy going.

Other options for re playability might be some point bubbles and combo chains scattered throughout.

Good ideas there.

Combo chains? im not sure what you mean, unless you mean 5 points lined up?

I actually put in a mini game at the end when you've saved the Capybara. The toy capybara us usually won in claw machines, so i made a custom claw machine and put it in there with a bunch of nifty looking capybaras to win.

ALSO!!! there is a plain white capybara right on top of the claw machine, and as soon as i can, i'd like to get the grant xp option for a challenge to see who can come up with the coolest capybara costume, using the stickers and decorations in the game.

Anyhow, the level has been updated, and i'm excited to see what you guys think of the claw machine. its a tough little sonofagun to make, but its really fun to play with.

I'm really having fun with this level, and anyone who plays it through, i'd love to have feedback and suggestions from. the thermo is only half full, because i was very sparing with the materials i used, so there is plenty of room to add in more content. keep an eye on this, because its going to be updated pretty often with new content, (much like LBP!)

Ok, I'm waiting for the level to load now
Nice description BTW!

Pretty obvious where to go thanks to the arrows Looking really quite cute so far. Loving the positioning of the camera - that picture is a keeper! All the food looks really good too. The effect on the waterfall is excellent. Nicely made swing there too. That fish coming out of the water was a touch of genius!
Some nice water effects all around here, but when I was "swimming" trying to save that thing some sound effects would have been nice.
Just found a nicely positioned treasure chest!
Haha, cave skeleton bit was funny.
I'll stop with the action updates now and cut to the chase, the level is really well designed and quite a pleasure to play. Occasionally it's hard to tell where to go/what to do - but I found my way pretty easily.

Pros:
-Well designed
-Beautiful to look at
-Some really good water physics

Cons:
-A little too simplistic at times

EDIT; just realised I was meant to take the thing with me! I did most of the level without it so I started again and now it's following me
It does need the occaisonal bit of help but overall it can look after itself pretty well. And it's so cute!
Brilliantly funny how it ate through the tree that was blocking the path! I'm realising now what a lot of hidden extras there are in this level - good work.
My laptop is almost out of charge now, so I'll finish the level and report back later

Hi there. Just finished your level and loved it.

PROS:
Visuals - Some great looking sections. I thought your waterfall was one of the best I've seen. I know its very hard to make a decent looking waterfall but you have definitely managed it.
Plot - Some would say its too simple but I think its perfect and this "cute" fell you have suit LBP perfectly. This is what LBP does best in my opinion.
I liked the mechanics behind it. It all seemed to work quite well.

CONS:
Direction - The first time I played through this the little fella got lodged in the underground part to the very left. (If you take him out of the water to the left) The fact he fitted perfectly into the spot that he got lodged into I thought he was meant to stay there and continued on my merry way without him only to get stuck as I didn't have him to progress. This though was a minor thing and I really don't think it would happen to a lot of people.
Ummm.... only other suggestion is make it a little longer...... but thats only because I'd like to enjoy it for longer!

Overall I really enjoyed this level. Well done.

If you get a chance I'd love to know what you think of my PINBALL WIZARD levels 1 or 2.

Great Job on those levels, i'm really flattered that such great creators are impressed with my level. I'm looking into ways to improve it though, so if you have any suggestions, i'll probably do them.

So im working on a way to make the level not exactly longer, but more fun with mini games on the way out and back. if anyone can think of a cool minigame idea, even if it sounds ridiculously hard to do, im up for a challenge i wanna fill up that thermometer!

First of all, I think that's really cool that you made this level as a Valentine's gift for your wife. Secondly, I really had fun playing this level!

The good stuff:
- This is a really cute level. Visually, there are lots of nice touches that I enjoyed, like the waterfalls, the treasure chests, the jewels/diamonds that are actually score bubbles, the half-eaten fruits, the splashes of water, the hearts above Capybara-chan's head... really good stuff!
- Nice story/events... I like how you try to save Capybara-chan only for the branch to break. Then you have to save him from drowning. Then you end up in a cave, helping Capybara-chan over a pit of fire, etc.. The turn of events were both surprising and fun.
- I don't know what a capybara is, but they sure are cute. Loved your creature designs. I loved how Capybara-chan was a follower-type creature that ate any edible thing in its path!
- Secret score bubbles!
- That mini-game was a nice addition.

Stuff that need improvement:
- This has been mentioned previously in an earlier post. But when Capybara-chan fell down into the water, I took him all the way to the left. He fell down the hole with the treasure chest, and I couldn't get him out anymore. So I had to restart the game. The path to the right, where you have to take him, is a little obscure. It might be helpful to give us a little hint where to go next, or perhaps make it impossible for Capybara-chan to fall into the hole.

Thanks for publishing this level, it was good, relaxing fun. I hearted your level and you as a creator.
If you have time, please try any of my levels... they can be found with my sig. Thanks!

i just played through this with a buddy of mine, ekelrock(the fella who creates levels with me) and we like what we see so far. The obvious first:

1. love the waterfall, best i've seen so far, although i didn't understand the mechanic of turning one of them off with the rock? was this done on purpose or does it have some effect on the outcome of the game?

2. the fish with the paintball splash was genious! i am sorry to say, but i have a fish tank level in the works, and this WILL have to be implemented in some aspect, its just perfect!

things i liked:

1. Story seems well thought out and dialogue fit.

2. Set pieces added to atmosphere and story, and every object you used served it's purpose to either move the player or story along.

3. The broken tree - artistic, well designed, and nicely implemented into gameplay

4. Overall this is a very "cute" level, and im sure my gf will like it when she tries it out

Things that i didn't like as much:

1. Some of the objects did glitch on me a couple times.
A.The tree that capybara-chan seemed to be stuck on got stuck on the rock once and caused me to restart, since i couldnt break it(for him to slide of the water/cliff).
B. The part with the treasure chest(soon after you find capybara-chan where the floor dissolves as long as he is with you.I had to restart twice because he got stuck in the floor and i couldn't pull him out.
C. The mini-game arm got stuck trying to grab some extra points! probably not that necessary to fix(or maybe it's meant to be a one grab kinda thing?

2. I thought the platforming was a little lite for my taste, but maybe that's me. I also think you could stretch the story a little more if folks(or your wife) seem to be interested. It was kind of quick.

Overall this was a good experience and i gave it 4 stars for the attention to detail, very cool effects, and interesting story intertwined into the gameplay. I believe once all the kinks are polished out, and you extend the lavel a bit it will be worth 5 stars. i will heart it to see how the progress comes along. if you don't mind, add me on psn so i can see when you republish this level, and so we can keep track of eachother's future work! psn: xthaviolentonex thanks for taking your time to make a level that i hope evryone enjoys, especially your wife!

Awesome criticism guys, i really appreciate it. well, tonight i republished it, with the following fixes/add-ons:

It is now impossible for the capybara to fall into that treasure hole, (you didnt really need to bring him along at all... just pick up the treasure map there)

A sign now sits in front of the smuggler's cave, which i hope will kinda guide people in better...

HUGE revamp of the claw machine. it now works much faster, and more reliably. (i have played it for 2 hours straight with no real game-stopping bugs) now you get to display your won capybaras, and keep them!

A contest is now set up inside. decorate your very own capybara, (which will be displayed on the large pedestal when you get it from the claw machine) complete with an in-game edit mode. as soon as i have enough xp myself, i'll be getting the "offer xp" thing for the forums to give an xp prize to the winners/runners up. for now, however, the winner's capybara will be added to the claw machine with your very own pedestal! This level now has a shout out to LBPC for the competition as well!

More hidden points, new camera angles, sound effects, for when you fall into the water, decorations and so forth...

Once you've gotten to the claw machine you can get a special item, a sticker, that when used you can skip the level to play with the claw machine or take part in the contest without having to replay the whole thing.

Im currently working on adding a bit to the level and that should be done sometime this week. thanks for all the outstanding support on this level, and i'll be checking both of yours out tonight before i go to sleep. so expect feedback soon!

TJapan:

I thought the level was super cool. With a few exceptions.

I thought the waterfall was really cool.

I thought you might want a spawn point when you go under water. Or after. When I went over the falls (after free the capybara-chan) I was exploring a bit. But I didn't innitially get capybara-chan to bring with me - you may want to put a voice note from him to say "help help" or something. After exploring there was no way to go back to get capybara-chan, and therefore I had to start all over... When I got to him the second time, I guessed that I was supposed to take him with.

I thought the mini-game was awesome. Though the 3rd from the right (next to the camo-capybara) was no where to be found, and the podium was unfortunately left empty - or was that supposed to be for the sticker?.

Anyway, 5 stars and a heart!

my feedback for capybara-chan..

i thin the level was really cute and well designed, everything seems to fit in in this level.. the capybara's are cute and that what you can expect from japanese toys and such...

the gameplay seem simple enough but i agree with TJapan, it must have taken you quite some time to get everything to work right.. those waterfalls and those splashes are nice, this is the 1st level that surpasses Vmethos' water effect, (Vmethos' water is ofcourse nicely done also, and i respect that) youve emitted glass and paint that made the water effect as realistic as LBP could.. i think that be hard to beat.

the story is simple but theres drama in it, which makes you feel the need to rescue the poor thing.. falling off the the waterfall then chasing it down the river was just fantastic.. youve done a great job in this level... also getting that capybara to chomp down your obstacles was pretty neat too.

only one complain my friend... your capybara-chan squshed me into the wall (last lift) causing me to spawn back to the last checkpoint, i attempted twice to get back died once in the jump, then i realized the lift is already up, and theres no way to get back.

i had to restart and make sure the same thing wouldnt happen anymore.

my suggestion.... if you can have a checkpoint in each lift, then even if you get squashed again youll just spawn back to where you died..

overall the level looks great, worthy of a heart.

hey TJapan if your into action and platforming, i'd appreciate it if you play my metal gear karas level.

I just played your level. I thought it was very nice. I want to know how to make the waterfall now, and the fish too.

Anyways, this may be just a minor annoyance of mine, but I'm not too crazy about the ground being grabbable along with what you need to grab. Also, I caught all the animals in the mini game, but not all of them showed up on the bottom. Was I supposed to catch them one at a time?

Edit: Ok, played it a second time. They all showed up now.

Yeah... 'fro seems to be bugged, and im working on getting that fixed. everything happens, except for the showing up on the pedestal.

So anyhow, my wife wants me to make a level for each of those nifty little guys... so instead of extending this level, i think i'm going to do that.

In regards to the contest, the prize will be that if you win the decorating contest, i'll make your capybara be part of the mini-game, and create a level based on your capybara! do make them good, im hoping to get a few participants.

in regards to the ground being grabbable... you might be on to something there... i'll see what i can do about that before i begin to work on the next one. let me know if you guys are going to take part in the contest, or if you think its a terrible idea...

Unfortunately, you can't save the one you make in the level in "Edit Mode."

You should send everyone that enters the blank capybara, or make the blank one available in the level. The people that enter can send their versions back to you when they're done. That way, both you and the creator would get credit in the object description.

Okay, when you get the Plain white capybara now, in the claw machine, you also get it as a prize. i edited the level and republished it. now you can play around and make the coolest capybara you can.

I also tweaked fro, so she SHOULD pop up every time now.

i added in a spawn point at the top of the lift, but i cannot add in a spawn point because of how capybara-chan moves. he'd get stuck on it.

also added a couple more decorations in anticipation of the competition... just waiting on a bit more xp...

This is a seriously cute level... no - I'm not even using hyperbole. Cutest thing I think I've seen. Now here's the funniest part. I usually don't really get excited about "cute" but the minute I saw the little Capybara chan... OMG - instant smile and laugh. Adorable, just adorable. I really like the fact that he follows you like Don Lu's dog... only yours seems to spout love hearts and the creature brain noises cease to be weird and alien like on most things with creature brains.... it's the sweetest thing I've seen on an LBP level.

OK enough gushing

I really did enjoy the level. Challenging in some spots but not frustrating. Beautifully done waterfall. I like the respect for the deceased treasure hunter part too. Made me think of the film Goonies. "Those are Willie's."

The mini game is really fun too. I wasn't sure about the differnt trophies in the room but I'm figuring it's based on how well you did on the level.

Overall a 5 star level in my book. I'll be back to play it again... gotta play that mini game!!!!

Thanks for sharing it.

the trophies in the first area are to display your won capybaras. (from the minigame) and if you get the sticker in the minigame, you can use the sticker switch to bypass the level to just play the minigame. the trophies near the end are for the competition i'll be doing as soon as i have enough xp to buy the thing that lets me offer xp.

anyway, im really glad you enjoyed the level! i learned a LOT about creatures, switches and things making it, and i'm currently working on the next installation, which will showcase different cousin capybaras, (the ones you can win in the mini game)

I'll do that. It would be nice if there was a feature that listed the people that made the items in your levels when you use community objects. Similar to the contributors section in the object info.

Also when I'm done with the level, you could take your picture with him and upload it. That way the picture would have a link to your levels.

By the way, go go Robo-bara-chan!

Hey TJapan!

I'm the kind of man's man that eats nails in vodka for breakfast and shaves with a handful of broken glass, but the Japanese style of abstract cuteness in this level had a surreal charm that broke through my granite exterior and warmed my (manly) heart.

(Right, that's enough of that)

Your waterfall is one of the best I've seen, and the splash effects when the fish leap out of the river are brilliantly done.

The level design for the capybara following section is nicely done, inventive and smooth.

The finish of the level is just brilliant, and your grab machine works beautifully. The prizes on the podiums is a great idea also.

I was wondering what the key from the sticker switch was for - but you've explained that already.

The only issues I had were that there are mechanisms which, once activated, can't be undone. The underground lift for instance. I went exploring without the capybara and used the lift - and when I worked out the route I realised that I had to restart, which I was happy to do but some people won't.

The opposite is true of the piece of ground that lifts as you bring the capybara into daylight, near the beginning - you should change it to a permanent switch so once it's open it stays open (When I saw the end-screen I decided to go back and see if I missed anything - and had to restart...)

The only other thing is the jewels! It's a fantastic idea to have the route altered by taking the jewels or not - but from what I could tell (I played through a few times) if you don't take the jewels the route is much quicker and you get fewer points. If you do take them you go the more interesting route and get the jewels with the explosive device as well. Surely the honest folk who leave the poor explorers jewels (the note from the explorer was very funny btw), should receive the greater reward (I'll take cash).

Minor niggles aside - this is a level that I'll definitely play again - and I'll go into edit mode and have a proper crack at making a decent capybara! But for now, here's my pitiful effort:

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/6774/aphoto16.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Well done on a great level - I'll try your others in a bit!

From the sounds of it the level is great. My PS3 is broken though.

Also, posting some pics on your front page might be a good idea?

@boogaloo hey man, i appreciate all the comments! its always such a treat to see people who enjoy the things you've made. I'm glad the level somehow managed to crack the granite surrounding you, that gives me hope for the future capybara levels! Is there any F4F level in particular you want me to check out for ya?

@dkjestrup Yeah, i was going to do that but i lost my card reader... so as soon as i find it they shall be posted. The waterfall is made using emitters and glass, some select sound effects, and the smoke from the rockets. you'd have to see it to understand it.

I'm surprised that everyone likes my waterfalls so much... maybe i should make my "water" pieces collectible in the claw machine too...

I played it today and really liked the level. The visual is really beautiful, with lovely characthers and a cool design. The parts I liked most is the lake and the cave where you control a mine car. There's too the waterfall and the fishes that spawn before in the cave, loved it

The level is not really difficult, making you pass most of the time exploring and relaxing. The minigame in the end is really fun, and i liked when the music changes when you capture a capybara.

I made a capybara (not so cute, because i'm not good in those things hahaha). Maybe you can find a photo in the level's infos xD 5 stars and heart!

If you want, take a look in my levels xD (i think Polar Peak is the best of them)

You should have a checkpoint after you get out of the cave. After we got out, I went back for the hamburger, and somehow got killed by the tree. Was there gas in the tree? Anyways, I was sent to the checkpoint in the cave, but the way out was closed off again.2009-02-28 22:42:00

lol yeah, there is cass in the tree, because when there is no other sound, you get that nifty bussing from the gas, that works great near the bees and beehive... i'll fix that, and make a checkpoint right outside the cave. I'll take a look at both your levels boogaloo...

I played this yesterday. It was really easy going and I liked it. It felt a lot like an MM level in that respect. Your waterfalls were awesome and I enjoyed moving through the level with the Capybara. When I tried to exit the cave with the Capybara eating the roots of the tree it was really frustrating because he got stuck over and over.
anyway I really enjoyed the level, great stuff. 5 stars and hearted!

So I played your level tonight. I wasn't deceived that's for sure!

I really you nailed the "cute and fun". I will have some good challenge a replicating this in my own beginner level (that we were talking in my thread over projects).

I think your scenery is simple yet effective and the real charm is about those little details that you do. I love the eating sound of the little dog and the good lying around. I love your waterfall. Not many people are able to such thing and make it look that good. I'm totally in love with the little fishes and their water splash.

Only one thing i'm wondering though. Wouldn't beginners or kids find it a bit complicated to bring back the dog with all the manipulations it implies? Just a thought.

Perhaps you are right, although for obvious reasons, i haven't gotten any feedback from that particular group. I tried to make it as simple as i could, while making it still entertaining. if we were to make something simple enough for children who would find my level too complicated, it would leave much to be desired for those of us who are more used to levels of higher sophistication...

I'm totally stoked that you enjoyed my level though! i love to hear feedback on my levels, (especially when it's good!) and even more so when someone has an idea i haven't thought of.

I'd like to look into forming a group of friends who all tackle a task seperately, and come together on the forum to discuss the difficulties. For a beginners level, perhaps we could come up with a base layout of a level, and have a few people work on the level seperately. We could use your ultra beginners and girlfriends thread if you wanted, or mayhap i could create another.
