Wondering Why LBP3 Didn't Go The 3-D Route??

Archive: 27 posts

A bit DISSAPOINTED they didn't go the 3-D route because the name fits perfect LBP3-D. Anyways that would of opened up a whole new world to everyone not only would we get 2-D but 3-D. Little Big Planet Karting did it why not LBP3 unless they will announce it in the coming months.

Some examples you could create a full house and play hide n Seek or you could create a Mario 64" or a Full fledged city where we can just hang out well I can only hope lol

Would you want 3-D LBP??

Here's an ex. From LBPK

Well 3-D LBP would take away from the LBP-ness that we all know and love, it won't be the same!

If you want 3-D, then MM's PS4 project for the next generation of Play. Create. Share. is the game for it.

Why do most people automatically assume LBP being 3d would take away from the feel of the game? If you have the option to make your level 2d or 3d and you have as much control as in lbp2, then nothing is lost

Well a 3-D LBP means a 3D level editor, that would be a major change to me in my opinion.

LBP3 is more of an update than a complete and overall redesign, which is what a 3D LBP would have to be.

MM's secret project is pretty much confirmed to be what you seek, however.

Doesn't mean it would be a bad change though, do it right and it'll just make the game better.

It didn't go the 3D route because it simply can't. Not on the LBP 1 engine at least. If Sumo were to even consider making LBP3 a 3D platformer, it would require a completely new engine. At least with 16 layers we should be able to make basic 3D platformers.2014-06-16 03:18:00

I kinda sense laziness in the developers they can make it 3-D and 2-D unless they plan to do that on LBP4 they made LBPK 3-D it actually went well except the create mode was buggy2014-06-16 04:35:00

When I imagine a fully 3D LBP, I always think of Karting, but without karts. But of course that could have been done better. I am kind of happy they decided not to go full 3D for LBP3, but I wouldn't mind the LBP franchise expanding into a 3D game eventually, but with a different title. I think it would be interesting if they kept the primary LBP series as a 2.5D platformer, but expanded into new games with different game styles/editors like Karting did.

I can't wait to see what Media Molecule provides for us though.

I'm kinda glad they stuck with the 2-D route. You see, LBPK had 3-D, but the Create Mode for me was rather difficult for me. Actually, I still struggle with it even now.

Besides, I've adapted too much with the 2-D style. Changing it to 3-D on the fly is like trying to write with your bad hand.

It's not laziness. Sumo Digital are only a small company and a 3D LBP would need to be built from the ground up because, I'm assuming, the engine they're working with right now isn't capable of full 3D.
Also, please refrain from calling any of the developers lazy. They are very hard working people.

I can only imagine UFG wasn't thinking when they were coding the create mode. It would be great if it worked more like the 2D create mode with some slight changes. L1/R1 could push in/out of the Z-axis. The view would go isometric while you're pushing. Thicker/thinner buttons aren't needed because you can just hold X/Triangle while pushing. Depending on which is selected, the right analog stick could resize/X-rotate, Y/Z-rotate, or turn the camera. L2/R2 could switch between the right stick's uses.

Boom. 3D level editor with all the ease of 2D.

Karting is not really 3D (you just have a flat street with some hills), you can't look/shoot up etc and it's really hard to create... Real 3D with all that logic of LBP2 would make it nearly impossible for the most of us to make a good level or you would need months for it... I think 16 layers is a good solution they have found...2014-06-17 14:51:00

It didn't go full blown 3D because it didn't need to. I'm perfectly fine with the main LBP titles being 2.5D. *mew2014-06-17 16:23:00

If lbp made game cameras able to view in the 3D that people have become accustomed to, but made it easier to work with, alltogether with the 16 layers, I think that it would work just great

I'm thinking they may implement something like this, because although a engine renovation wouldn't be completely feasible, adding camera aid would be certainly doable, and with all of the 3D cameras that were being made in LBP2, I doubt Sumo Digital would overlook that, they might just ease what people have become accustomed to

It did not got 3D because of MM's new game and the fact that it would take a lot more work to create. We would not be getting LBP3 right now if it did. LBP is doing exactly what it should be doing: Perfecting 2.5D creation, allowing easier creation and offering more advance tools for experienced creators.2014-06-19 23:53:00

while they may have made it possible to rotate the (glitched) 3d cam, or made a proper cam for that kind of view, i would not at all be surprised if they ignored it completely.
None of the objects and materials were designed to be viewed from that angle therefore it is way too easy to make a level that causes the game itself to look terrible.
They would have to fix a lot of rendering issues with both the engine and existing objects b4 they'll consider making the 3d cam an actual tool for all players to use. even decorations render based on how "deep" in the z axis they are attached (not which one seems to be closer to the camera), they would have to change this to be able to use them properly with a 3d cam.
for a game supporting all the levels from lbp1 and lbp2 I wouldn't be expecting such changes, unless of course they have a "legacy mode" the engine reverts to while playing levels published in the older games while an updated engine has overhauled the way it renders things for levels published in lbp3

imo LBP should stay 2.5D.
high quality 3d levels with unique gameplay would take way too long to make, and for the effort you would be better off moving to unity3d or unreal engine so you might actually be able to release the game as a native ps4 game.

a full 3d lbp would require loads of presets for all the different genres as most people would have trouble creating even basic gameplay (whole different ballgame with full xyz motion and rotation) , and for everything you would have to learn to make your own gameplay you may as well learn a scripting language and bypass lbp altogether.

another option would be a 3d lbp focused on creating platforming levels for sackboy, rather than creating any type of game, but that would have to be a spin off like karting, as it wouldn't really be a natural progression from previous games.

I dont know.......... I've always thought 3d lbp would be a mistake, in the same way 3d worms was a mistake, going 3d for the sake of it was a backwards step in the overall quality of the experience. and i dont see why it's necessary for lbp. If you really want to be able to do more with 3D gameplay, something like unity 3d might be more to your liking

lol thats funny coming from you ev=P

was expecting someone to say that....
my only interest in the 3d cam glitch was the challenge of finding a way around the fact it couldn't be turned without messing up the view.
LBP wouldn't be half as fun for me without so-called "limitations" to hit, poke, prod, probe, bend and break.

If you are talking about the deco render bug, then I'm guessing they fixed how deco and other objects render on LBP3 just like they did for LBPV... Well they better had... Otherwise i'm not sure I'll want to touch LBP3 with a 10 foot pole, hohoo. MM actually broke how things like deco render on LBP2, they worked much better on LBP1. So I imagine Sumo will fix that part at least. *mew

Yeah... I agree with the people saying a full 3D LBp wouldn't be so great.

I'm personally happy that they didn't go Full 3D, cause, no matter what it just wouldn't be the same... as for starters, the level editor would need a complete redesign, which would mean everyone would have to start over learning again... Also, the current physics simulation is 2D.. so, they would need a completely new Physics Engine for 3D, so, now what about that backwards compatibility with LBP1 and 2? Well, to make sure that would work they would need to keep the old Physics engine in as well as the new one... I don't see why so many people is so eager to have LBP become a full 3D game, now that it is a Platforming game....

BUT!

Here's a thought... it would be pretty sweet if they were to make it 2D as now, but, in both X and Z.. so you could tilt the camera on the Y axis to make a full 360 degree 2D platformer ( Almost like Resogun on PS4 )
That way they would keep the traditional 2D Platforming gameplay, but in multiple dimensions...

Karting's create mode felt like ModNations' create mode with a few LBP-themed tools thrown in. I don't know if it would make a good template for a proper 3D platforming tool.

Personally, I prefer LBP's abstract 2D world. IMO, good 3D platformers are few and far between and I'd imagine creating quality 3D levels would take forever to build, and probably not be up to the quality of what we're used to.

I agree with the above. I think people will be surprised at how much more freedom 16 layers will bring and wager a couple months in people will not be saying they wish it was 3D. I personally think I will prefer it in 2.5 because for me it will be easier to create in it.2014-06-26 15:50:00

I think its going to be 16 layers now so that to me is a nuff i used the 3d logic glitch to see how much room that gives us to create with and this is what it looks like.
