Stickers: Friend and Foe

Archive: 4 posts

I suppose this could be under tutorials, possibly.

It's just my personal perspective of Stickers on LBPK.

Stickers are your FRIEND if:
Trying to create a horse?
A dragon? (superbly done by dsmmat by the way)
Maybe just a realistic rock?

If you have the hang of creating objects using the provided circle, square, rounded square etc then why not move on to using the Sticker Template Tool? Choose anything in the Sticker section and the material you've chosen will miraculously be the same shape! When you've finished creating your object just clear the stickers off the material (using the edit sticker/decoration tool in your popit) and your masterpiece is ready for use.

Used wisely (small) within your level they are an easy way to make an impression, bright and colourful. Banners and advertising boards spring to life on a racetrack level, for instance. Scenery is important within any level, sounds mad as you're probably just going to be racing past it, but trust me, it can be the difference between a good track and an incredible one!

On the HUD
My personal preference. They can be simply used to help the player as a guide on a button to press using the HUD tweaker Sticker Frame.

Unfortunately that's all the good things I personally have to say about Stickers.

Stickers are your FOE if:
Used to decorate your level. Try it, any sticker used to cover the ground for instance. Almost certainly you'll have increased the size to cover a larger section of your level. 2 or 3 of these stickers will eat into your design space dramatically (thermometer, left hand side of the screen).

Used on a custom kart, place even a couple of stickers on a custom kart and you're heading for trouble. Unfortunately LBPK cannot cope with moving these about so you will invariably get massive slowdown during you're level or total crash.

As stated this is just my personal opinion and there are ways around these issues. Tutorials, when I get a chance, to follow.

I use stickers template tool in another way, for making advanced holes in material.
I select my material that i want to make hole in, i press square, select change form, the material, then i select stickers template tool. Instead of creating a form like a sticker, i delete it in my original material with Triangle and it's make beautiful hole.
This can be usefull if you deleted the original track and built your track with material, you can make holes in the road.

I use stickers in an artistic manner to add to my levels in a similar way to the story levels. I also haven't experienced too many issues with stickers on my kart, but that isn't something I have greatly explored.2014-06-22 20:35:00
