What are You Studying/Teaching Yourself?

Archive: 18 posts

As the title says, whether you're studying at university, college, school or simply teaching yourself at home share what you're learning

A few days ago I was offered a place in Environmental Engineering which starts early in July, I still have absolutely no clue what kind of job I expect to get with it but it's what I like so I guess it doesn't really matter. I can't wait for my 'Solid Waste Engineering' class

Learning math with internet resources and books.
Halfway through my 4th marble notebook(and pen) right now doing trig, before I started I didn't even know how to do fractions.(I was a dum)
Should be at calculus Soon?, which means I'll finally be able to understand the books that've been collecting dust on my shelf for a year

Awesome, maths is an amazing thing, good luck with it. Shame I can't remember any of what I learnt, especially since I'm going to need it now.

Currently I am using Pimsleur to learn Spanish and Japanese. I find Japanese to be fun to learn and I want to get to know Spanish for my trip to South America next year.

Even though I took 2 Spanish classes in High School, I didn't learn dittly squat from those classes.

This year I am doing my Highers (Technically The Scottish equivalent to A-Levels) in English, Human Biology, Physics, Maths, and Chemistry. I am also doing Grade 4 Electric Guitar this year- and I am also self teaching myself Italian. I also hope to study medicine at University 2014-06-29 21:47:00

I'm also currently interested in learning Japanese (mostly cause I'm into anime, but their culture seems interesting too outside of that)

I haven't taken any classes, but I know a few word in Japanese

Konichiwa means Hello
Sayōnara means Goodbye
Gaijin/Gaikokujin basically means foreigner (thanks internet)
Tomodachi means Friend(s) (Thanks Nintendo)
Arigatō means Thank You
Teppanyaki is what American refer to as Hibachi Grills

I learned these four through anime.
Kanpai basically means cheers (or bottoms up (a form of toasting))
Kami means God (Thanks DBZ)
Binbogami - God of bad luck
Benjogami - God of bathroom

I don't know much, but I am thinking of taking a class in college (I've never taken a language course before).

That being said, I just want to say that I'm more interested in learning to understand/possibly speak it at this point. If I become sufficient at speech then maybe I could look at Kanji (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji) later.

Hi,

I bought a really great book in France for learning Japanese. It's called Le Japonais En Manga (http://www.amazon.com/Le-japonais-manga-French-Edition/dp/2723451208/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1406471697&sr=8-4&keywords=japonais+en+manga) ("Japanese Through Manga"). This is probably not going to be a big help to you as the books (there are two of them) are in French, but they did help me, if nothing else.

You've got panels from manga, with the romaji transcription below, the literal word-for-word translation, and then the natural idiomatic translation. I'm sure something like this exists in English.

Not going well.

Yeah, I will be doing all my highers assuming I passed my National 5 qualifications Only worried for English really :S Although I feel more confident for Higher English, because from what I have saw of the new CfE Higher, there is much less ambiguity in the questions- but the questions also support a lot of opinionated answers.

As for Higher History, I never took Nat5 History, but my Head of Social Studies said if I get an A in Higher English, then I can crash Higher History the next again year, which I would want to do because I love history! I made the mistake of taking Nat5 Geography because I figured I would try and focus on science related subjects ._.

Also I assume you are going into S5 after the summer? 'cause that would be pretty cool to know I am not alone xD

Yep S5 and I'll definitely be staying for S6 as well. I did 2 sciences and 2 social subjects (Phycics and biology, history and geography as well as Maths, English and RMPS) for 4th year with the intention of me going down the route of either one, looks more likely for the social subject route since I really enjoy History and RMPS but I'm still interested in Physics, not so much maths but I just would like the higher (that will take me until 6th year) English is the only subject I have a garunteed place in a higher class (we did the standard grade, got a credit grade and doing a two year higher.)
