New, Used, or Trade: How do you get your game on?

Archive: 16 posts

So, this has been an issue that's been getting a bit more attention as of late with the single-use code with Gears of War 2 and NBA Live '09 doing the same thing which is supposed to deter people from buying games from retailers like Gamestop and similar chains in other countries.

Here's some reading material:

Publishers Nudging Buyers Away from Used Games (http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/10/15/publishers-nudging-buyers-away-used-games)

Gamespot CEO: Responds (http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/11/28/gamestop-ceo-used-game-trades-help-consumers)

Now, I don't know 'bout you but I think the single-use code stuff is a bunch of ****. I have seen it happen with Limited or Collector's Editions of games where it unlocks an exclusive costume or something but never anything that was required to have to be able to actually enjoy the game. Basically, imagine buying a used game and then, having to purchase online content to be able to play the online levels that everyone else is playing just by buying the full retail version/unused game. It ***** over the consumer... it's not going to stop Gamespot from selling used games and most people aren't even going to know that they are buying a product that's incomplete.

I never buy brand new games... I have nothing against supporting game companies as it's my favorite hobby and I would want people to support me if I was working with a game company but, the grim reality is the fact that I don't have a lot of money... I might be lucky if I have enough money to buy a used game every 3 or 4 months. Needless to say, price and reviews are a big thing with me as I know when I purchase a game, the resale value is dramatically lower when you sell it back to a place like Gamespot.

Which brings me to my next point... Gamespot and similar chains have an incredible business model where you can sell your games back to them (roughly 5 or 6 to be able to afford 1) and they raise the price to the point where it's almost like reselling it as new. I think it's ******** so, I've been using a trading website called Goozex which you can navigate to through the link in my sig (yes, this is a shameless plug to get me referrals but I don't care.) I'm just glad that this site and any others that are doing the same thing have come along so the gamer doesn't have to get raped by Gamespot and their dopplegangers when all we want to do is have fun.

Anyway, there's the poll... vote and tell me why you do what you do when it comes to getting your games. Also, what's the deal with this single-use code **** that game companies have been doing? I mean, come on!

P.S. I dunno if this issue has been brought up already and if it has, I apologize... also, sorry for the harsh language, I'm used to posting on a M-rated forum I came from.

There's a local retailer I go to that trades in old games and imports new ones. Its a cheap place where you can buy used games as well as new titles.2009-02-17 22:28:00

Wow, single-use codes? That's a new one on me, yikes.

Goozex is a pretty awesome site, and I agree, retailers will rip you off royally if you sell games back to them; my best advice is to sell on Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, etc.

I once made the mistake of selling about 80 PS1 games to Gamespot for about $1 each......... I didn't know about ebay yet. Later on, I started selling games for nearly what I bought them for.

Anyway, I typically buy used games since new games are way too expensive for me, sometimes Gamespot has this offer where you get 1 free game if you buy two other used ones, that's how I get most of my games.

I buy new but wait for bargains because very few games are worth the full price. If I decide to sell games I sell them online if theres decent amount of money to be made and trade in the scraps at gamestation.2009-02-17 22:29:00

Another silly solution to their real problems they don't want to see.

They need to reduce their cost and make smaller games to get the retail price of new stuff go down. This is the only real solution to this industry.

Their present easy solution is ******* every up except them. And if you mess with the customer, you mess with the very health of your business. They really are crazy... or clueless should I say?

very sad.

If the games are good / big I don't mind paying a lot like oblivion except thats the only game really like it.

I really only buy new (because its easy) but i buy games that i read reviews about and make sure their good. But i made a dumb mistake lately...against all reviews and everythign I bought force unleashed anyway (new but I got it at circuit city where it was 30% off)

it was a good game (I love star wars) but the game was so short. Since I don't like forking up a lot of money for games I like to buy some that have a lot of game play....and I also bought the "Map Pack which is highly misleading and i feel like complaining to someone.

the description and everything is terribly mislead and i feel like an idiot i payed $10 for ONE mission...it was like 20 min long such a rip off

I'm surprised they havn't made their own preowned market for the downloadable games and add on content, something like they buy it back for 1/3 the cost and sell it preowned for 2/3 the cost.2009-02-17 23:13:00

Say you wanted to sell the mgs level pack you could sell your licence to access the content for $2 in psn money the licence could then be sold on to someone else for $4.

Result

You: $2 towards a different piece of DLC
Sony $2 profit
someone $2 saving

I doubt its ever going to happen though.

We usually buy new games if we go to the store, since we got the ps3 we have got some off of there, they are a heck of alot cheaper buying them from the playstation store or what ever its called, i am always up for saving some money if we can....2009-02-18 03:10:00

I buy new for the most part. I have traded a few games but get totally miffed at the rip off price some stores want to give. I refuse to except a few quid for a game that cost me 40 or more.2009-02-18 18:52:00

I think what the other guy was trying to say is that instead of Sony reselling data over PSN they could just sell it for full price which would be for the same product. A used piece of data is the same as a new piece of data... it's the same content. If a disc is used then there can be physical wear on the disc thereby it makes sense to sell it for a discounted price.

"THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR THIS CONTENT."

DLC is a big cash cow... I mean, they don't have to pay a dime for printing of manuals or discs or cases so selling stuff over the internet that stays on your hard drive is cheaper for the developer. Which, sometimes is a good thing because with games like Burnout Paradise... you can get the full game and all the DLC that's been released for it for only 30 bucks on PSN. So, sometimes the savings are passed on to the user... of course, sometimes it's not... like in the case of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, there was DLC released that was only about 20 minutes long but costed 10 dollars. Double edged sword, I guess.

Anyway, I'm surprised at the amount of people that voted they only buy New games... on another site I did this poll on, most of the people voted that they only buy used.

Depends the kind of forum really and your answers aren't well made. Someone (like me) buying both new and used games will have a hard time voting. I voted simply "new" simply because I buy more new games than used games but still, i'm messing your data accuracy as well as everybody like me does.
