The Turtle or The Hare - xThaVIOLENTonEx

Hi everyone. Me and ekelrock did this level for a competition entry on lbpforum.net. i will do F4F on this but please be patient because i work and create a lot, so i play when i can. just a heads up. I hope that doesn't stop folks from tryin this out. The Turtle or the Hare? Created by xThaVIOLENTonEx and ekelrock It's a timeless tale...the tortoise and the hare. Two vastly different creatures set against eachother in a trial competing to see if speed is everything, or if slow and steady wins the race. Now translate that to LBP, and you get this level! In The Turtle or The Hare, you are faced with a question. What is it that you love? Is it speed? Is it beating that clock trying to scrape every last point together? Knowing that once you do your PSN will forever grace that scoreboard as reigning champ? Or is it really true that slow and steady wins the race after all? If you're willing to to bust your brain a little bit(or have a friend to bring along, since two heads are better than one!) then make your choice and continue, but after that, you are on your own(unless, of course, you bring that FRIEND!). Is knowledge your one, true love? This path has you solving puzzles and completing tasks to proceed from room to room in a challenge that exchanges points for problem solving! If it hasn't been made obvious already...it is HIGHLY recommended that you bring a friend along with you for this one! The more the merrier! http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9985/aphoto22wp0.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Pretty Lights! The first in a series of mind-bending and agility testing obstacles. If you love a challenge(and a good time) then grab a friend if you have any and come try your luck down the turtle's path! http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4119/aphoto24zi2.jpg (http://imageshack.us) Second Challenge: Play and find out! http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4901/aphoto27op4.jpg (http://imageshack.us) The Sensor Truck(whatever that means?). This level looks incredible. The attention to detail really puts it over the top. Did you make the letters with the corner editing tool? | 2009-02-20 18:24:00 Author: ApellesJr Posts: 282 |
Hey man i just played, and im really impressed! the level looks great, and the multiple routes are very cool. im a puzzler myself, so obviously im biased about which one i like better, but really both are quite fun. all of those materials... i don't think i've ever seen them used in a level to that extent before but overall it really looks great. How much of the art did you do yourself? it looks pretty awesome. like ApellesJr said, those letters... you should make them prizes throughout they are so good. i'm very impressed with this level, so thanks for making a really great level to add to the community! 5 stars from me man! | 2009-02-20 21:04:00 Author: TJapan Posts: 225 |
Thanks to everyone for trying my level out so far! i appreciate all the feedback. Keep it coming, please! p.s. - if folks are really interested in the letters, i can either send you them if you add me on psn, or i will put them in the level if folks are requesting! i have them saved as an object, and its really easy to material change them to your liking, and change the thickness. I would be glad to see others putting them to use. They are courtesy of ekelrock - my co-creator! He is an amazing artist an he actually does all the custom artwork in our levels himself. | 2009-02-21 12:52:00 Author: xThaVIOLENTonEx Posts: 26 |
Ok just finished and i gotta say i love this level. The fact you have two different sets of puzzles means that almost everyone will play it twice and both sets of puzzles are hard. Those letters are really good aswell so they may make good prizes for a lot of people. I loved the style you have given to your level, its simple yet looks attractive. The opening is nice and intriduces you to your level quite well. Also each of the puzzles you created i have never seen before and therefore that gives you points in my book for being creative . I enjoyed the puzzles due to them (as said before) being new and not too difficult to figure out so i wasn't stuck on each one for a large amount of time. Overall i enjoyed your level due to the simple design, multiple paths (each with its own different and challenging puzzles) and the new concepts you seem to have created yourself. The only possible improvement i could think of, which may be due to me being generally awful at that part, was at the beginning of the first race puzzle. I wasted all my lives on my first go just getting past the first few jumps that crushed you. You could add a checkpoint between these but like i said it may just have been and you may want to keep it that way. | 2009-02-21 20:59:00 Author: sharp357 Posts: 27 |

I played this level and enjoyed it... here's my review: Stuff I liked: - The visual design. You chose some rather unpopular materials for your level, but it really worked. The level looks great! The design was consistent all throughout, the color combination was perfect, unlike some other levels where you have so many different materials and contrasting colors thrown in together that it ends up hurting your eyes. I also liked the letters, it made me feel that you were personally speaking to me as I went through your level. - Loved the introduction at the start. It really made the level more interesting as it gave me a glimpse of what to expect. - Loved it that the level is multi-path. As a player I always love being given the opportunity to choose what I want to do in a level. Also, it's cool how you were able to make two paths, and yet still make each path considerably long and detailed. In the end, it was like having two COMPLETE levels in one, instead of two half-levels in one. - The puzzles were fun, but the race was even better! Loved the obstacles and the platforming sections, it was really quite exciting. - The secret/optional bubbles were cool. Stuff that might need improvement: - Although the "turtle" path was fun, I thought a few of the puzzles were a little easy. An example would be the one where you have to shoot balls at the switches on the ceiling. Not really a big deal, but considering how the race is much tougher, some might end up thinking that the puzzle area is the "easy" mode and the race area is the "hard" mode. - I did prefer the race. It was more challenging, more exciting. I guess my only issue here is that for some, it might be a little TOO difficult, especially the first part of the race with the crushing circles, and the part near the end where you have these circular swinging thinggies with electric floors. I died a couple of times in both areas, and if it's tough for one player, just imagine how crushingly difficult it will be for two or more players. A quick and simple solution would probably be to add at least one more checkpoint in between circular obstacles in both areas. I hearted this level and you as the creator. This was a really good level! Both areas were fun and it was aesthetically pleasing. I hope to see more levels from you! | 2009-02-22 08:00:00 Author: mostevilmilo Posts: 131 |
Lol, if you think i didn't give it a proper playtrough, be my guest. You actually called your level "Decent" yourself... | 2009-02-22 13:28:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
thank you mostevilmilo! i appreciate the feedback. especially from an amazing creator such as yourself. you are a big inspiration, and i know that some creators publish their work and then end it after that, but even when i have other projects i always love to go back and fix what i can. i will take everything you said into consideration when fixing this one. I agree with the puzzle section not being as fun as i had intended. i tried to use some of those beginning puzzles as warm-ups to introduce folks to the stuff later on, but after playing it once through the early puzzles tend to feel repetitive. I will work very hard to take these out and try and add some simple little "beat this minigame, unlock door to next room" puzzles. Thank you for being honest, i will let you know when i fix these areas. I will also make it more obvious that you can hide inside of the first set of crushing circles, underneath the big hearts(i cut out a square in the middle of the top two corners). And more checkpoints is fine...i can put those in right away. My intention is to never allow you to lose all your lives. I will put more in wherever they look like they could be useful. thanks for the suggestion! Thank you for all your feedback! | 2009-02-22 13:35:00 Author: xThaVIOLENTonEx Posts: 26 |
Lol, if you think i didn't give it a proper playtrough, be my guest. You actually called your level "Decent" yourself... Yea...somewhere amongst the two page description I gave it. Because im not full of myself, i apologize. Just read what other people have to say about it, and compare it to your "review." I'm just saying...you have the reviewing skills of my little brother's pet lizard...that's all. Go read through my posts. I mostly do reviews of others levels. Just go look at the correct way to review a level, good or bad. I've given some people 3 Stars(see Littlebiglife 2: insertion point in F4F thread), but my review was complete and offered good reason and descriptive thoughts on why i felt the way i did. call it decent...thats a compliment in a community of creators this great, but please just tell me why. and don't say beacuse of two bugs and one area with visible dark matter that i fixed in less than 30 seconds. check out this link to see where it won Best Technical Implementation over on lbpforum in a contest with folks like celteen, hexagohn, and ninjamicwz in there in case you think it was a bunch of nobodies! http://lbpforum.net/showthread.php?t=181&page=22 Post #432. Even the guy who won it said he thought my level was going to win! i just wanted a "decent" review(quality wise, not in terms of pos/neg), that's all! | 2009-02-22 14:01:00 Author: xThaVIOLENTonEx Posts: 26 |
Dude, don't be offended. I understand what you mean. It's just that.. I can't help it that those bugs are there. Should i just let them be? Should i enjoy levels with Dark Matter visible? I just don't like that. Anywa.. just to please you and end this discussion that might get out of hand, i'll give your level a new review. One that you consider a review Happy? | 2009-02-22 14:32:00 Author: ThommyTheThird Posts: 440 |
i would be very happy with that. And i thanked you for pointing out the bugs. I'm just saying that all those bugs could have fit into three lines of the review. i just wanted more, that's all. More of your opinion of everything else, i hope i didnt come across as being upset. When i play your levels and review them you will definitely see what i mean. Do you have any level in particular you would like me to try out? | 2009-02-22 16:08:00 Author: xThaVIOLENTonEx Posts: 26 |
Ok i played your level a while ago, sorry for the delayed F4F Ok my thoughts: Pros: - I like Turtles...enough said -Awesome detail -Cool concept with a choice of skill or brain power Cons: -The hare path is very difficult, the beginning crushers dont have any checkpoint so if you make a mistake on the last one you have to repeat them all which quickly frustrated me. -The second puzzle for the turtles path broke for me....twice. The laucher gets destroyed sometimes when you launch the circle. It usually occurs after the circle has relanded in the launcher after being shot up. I actually never finished the level because i didnt like playing as the hare, and after the turtle puzzle broke twice, i didnt feel like repeating it again. | 2009-02-22 21:07:00 Author: King_Tubb Posts: 435 |
Okay, so i just republished with some minor updates to the Hare section: Fixed first crushing circle so player can clearly see that there is a safe spot in the top two quarters when the circle closes. Added checkpoints between every crushing circle. Tried to hide all dark matter. Atmospheric changes throughout both sections. | 2009-02-23 00:14:00 Author: xThaVIOLENTonEx Posts: 26 |
I would definitely be interested in the letters. I've been using a set that I got from some random level, but I really dont like the way they look. Where do you get all the default sticker letters from the game by the way? Because I only have about 7 of them. | 2009-02-23 07:27:00 Author: ApellesJr Posts: 282 |
just add me on psn and i will send you the letters. | 2009-02-23 07:29:00 Author: xThaVIOLENTonEx Posts: 26 |
When I read the name of your level, I thought oh no, someone beat me to it, since my current project has a similar title. But no, your level was a completely different take than mine, lol. I liked it. I thought it was polished pretty well for the most part and was fairly unique compared to many levels I've played. The lighting and camera angles were well done and the visuals were clean, which is something I like to see in levels. In particular I liked playing the race section. The large semi-rotating circles with the sliding sponges was one of my favorite parts, as well as the crushing section. The pieces that bounced you up and down as you were descending... a bit irritating to me personally but not overly so. The puzzle section didn't feel as polished as the rest, but nothing specific comes to mind at the moment. Except at the beginning when the puzzle entrance opened...it threw me too far and killed me or else landed me on dark matter a few times. Other than that though, job well done imo. | 2009-02-23 11:37:00 Author: Shalatii Posts: 103 |
Hey your level was fine, took the "fast" path cause didn't feel like thinking . This part is quite fun but also quite difficult, for example some of the rotating squishing wheels. I loved when you grab a sponge which goes up and then you do a huuuge swing tike Tarzan, lol, that was cool. The part that didn't convince me was the wooden pillars that also squished you at the end, quite slow and with not a point really hehe. The design was cute with a "love" theme all over the level (red color and hearts), so I give the aesthetics 3,5 stars. Overall an interesting level (even if I didn't try the "brains" part), and I gave it 4 stars See ya | 2009-02-23 19:49:00 Author: Snakeowns Posts: 34 |
I played through the Turtle path and wanted to write up some of my impressions. I enjoyed the level and the look and feel quite a bit though I liked the look of the Hare side more from the limited section that I played of that path. I?m a puzzler more and the Turtle path seemed like a logical choice but I think you?ve done good in making both of these paths available in this level. This could have easily been two different well-made levels that catered to different game styles but by adding them into one you allow the level in general to get more play and exposure than any one of the two. The puzzles were all fairly straightforward with nothing obscure and offered a good progression on the theme of puzzles you used. Your puzzles are a new aspect of the color matching and spatial based puzzles and are a fresh take on the fetch-and-place puzzles that litter LBP. The Turtle path is a slow and steady path to take and I was surprised at how long it was. For the amount of areas in your level, between the two different paths, there is a lot of real estate to play through and make the level more satisfying in general. As I mentioned earlier it did seem that the set design was a bit drab on the Turtle side path but I think that can be interpreted as a reflection of the more staid, logical aspect of the puzzler versus the active, frenetic aspect of the Hare path. I want to give the Hare side a more thorough working over so I can get a better feel of the level. I died very quickly on this path and didn?t have much time to give it a few more goes so I will try to edit this post later if there are any new impressions to write up. I agree with many others that the artwork and custom lettering is a very impressive aspect of the levels. They are very well done and you or your mate, whom-ever worked on the art/set design, has a very good eye and talent for it. Good work on this level it was a well thought out and enjoyable level to play. It is big enough and has enough content to be a satisfying play for those looking for mature levels. It caters to enough game styles that it has a little bit for most players. | 2009-02-24 00:16:00 Author: Trindall Posts: 297 |
*runs back to the computer* Oh no! *pant* Oh no! The level is broken =( Ok more serious now: The problem: The turtle path is broken! when you enter the tube to go to the puzzle, you slide out the back go over the first puzzle and land of the electric floor. Serious problem!!! Now onto the working side, the Hare: 1. A-MA-ZING, this was awesome platforming. I didnt have ninja-like qualities though =(. I got a score of 88445, awesome work, but i would definitly play this level again on the hare side. 2.Not much left to say. During the Tarzan swing i was so tempted to shout, so i did. I shouted "In the name of Allah!!!", and no not that im racist against Muslims i didnt intend for that to be offensive, it was just the first thing that popped into my head, because i was doing my research paper for my history class, and the paper was on Islamic Accomplishments around the year 1000 during thier Golden Age. | 2009-02-27 00:06:00 Author: King_Tubb Posts: 435 |
