Having problems with water physics, any suggestions (@_@)

Archive: 10 posts

Hellohellohello to all btw, i'm new here [|;{

Basically i'm near completing a trip to the Zoo level, and i'm looking for ideas to work around slowdown/lag when dealing with water...

I'll explain. i have a pool of water made up of little glass particles. and i have a plug which dissolves when you pull a lever, so the water drains out and fills an area. Then you can jump down the pipes and continue in your own sackboy way.
it just about works with no real framerate problems offline, but if i were to invite someone to play with me then the water makes that section almost unplayable. So i really dont wanna limit my level to 1 player online, but still i like the water mechanics ^^
What to do? (=_=)

Welcome to the forums! You might wanna ask a mod to move this to the Help section.

As for the problem, you might wanna make the water a few layers of dissolve. Instead of falling down the pipe, they can just dissolve. After that, emit more "water" (not the glass particles) into the space you want to fill.

make the top of the water gas, then make everything else dissolve (or w/e you want). but this would only help if having less gas made the frame rate better.

another thing you could try is making the gas pieces bigger.

Using bigger pieces (and thus less) would improve the framerate. You can also try to limit the polygons (angles) of the water bits. The most effecient shape is the triangle (just 3 corners). That would probably change the way the "water" works though..2009-02-17 07:52:00

I suggest that you use the 5 or 6 corner shape and maybe make them slightly bigger, this would drastically lower the amounts of corners and complexity of the are as the normal circles have 20 corners. If that doesn't work then im afraid that you need to use some other kind of mechanic to achieve the water effect, maybe only use gas on a piston or like RickTheRipper said, only make the top of the water glass and the rest layers of dissolve, but that would only look good if you only could see the top of the water where all the glass is.2009-02-17 08:39:00

First of all, thanks goes to everyone, cause all your ideas a valid. I left this Thread in the ideas section, cause i think anyone looking for ways around the water physics limits will definitely pick up a few ideas here!!

I was messing around with different ideas before comin back to this thread, and i think just simply making bigger particles will solve it.

So i'll have to play test it online at some point.

another Idea to add to this thread, is using little bits of sponge which is from another thread on central, which actually create a great illusion as if they're splashing around but if i did this they wouldnt fill the pool cause they just become compressed.

I'd think you just use slightly bigger particles, but make them out of dissolve. Then add a sensor switch to every single one of em, and when you exit this area with the water, you dissolve them all. Because even though things are offscreen, they can still cause lag.2009-02-17 18:51:00

Yup tested online with 4 players. Works great.
I had to use circle shapes because the Hexagons/Octagons didnt flow properly.
Basically used the smallest circle possible without it becoming an octagon or somethin. I think it works well because they're really stable when undisturbed ie not much processing needed. but still flow like water.

Actually I stumbled across your first water level aages ago, really liked the effect it created, but the sponge in this case doesn't fill the pool. and if you use too much everything just overloads.

Anyway i've got everything sorted with the glass, works perfectly. Thanks anyway default
