Strange Glitch

Archive: 11 posts

I finished my level earlier today, after a long period of working on it. I had been testing throughout, to make sure everything worked out fine. However, on the final test, it became apparent that something was wrong.

Bubbles vibrated, or bounced up and down, continuously, despite never being told to do so. Glued down objects fell over. Respawn points also 'bounced' in the same manner. And sackboy would continue to move in the same direction when the analog stick was released. He would slide along until he hit some invisible wall, or until you jumped in the other direction.

In create mode, none of this happens; everything works fine. I checked the level over, and as far as I could see, I found no cause for these glitches.

My level is virtually unplayable now, but I've published it anyway, in case anybody wants to play it. It is based on the TV series Lost, and is called 'Little Lost Series 1'.

Thanks for any help.

That's weird, especially with the sackboy moving. I have no idea on that could happen. I'll go play your level. I also had this one glitch right after the 1.09 Edam patch. Everything in my level had no properties to it i.e. I could walk through almost all materials.

Your glitch probably has something to do with the 1.09 update...

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. This is the first I've heard of this, but there was mention of a couple of symptoms which I've heard about long before 1.09, such as the glued objects ungluing.

I've seen things like this, but it usually had to do with physics issues I had created that were creating strangeness during play mode. For instance, sandwitched material that were pressing against each other.

Here's what I would do:

1. Copy the level out to another place on your moon to play with it.

2. Don't unglue, but "cut" (using material erase) sections apart and see if you can make the issue go away. You may even see material that you thought was glued fall away.

3. Once you make the issue go away, go back into your original level and see if you can fix it.

Just as a general practice , it's a good idea to make sure your level is broken into sections which are not glued together. That way if an issue happens, it will be isolated to individual areas.

Keep in mind also, some of these strange things that happen are ALSO the reason LBP is so cool - the real-life physics that can break things also allows you to do some amazing things.

Wow, that's reallllly strange.
First time I've ever heard of this as I've never seen this.
These things though always happen outside of Create Mode so it makes it a nuisance when your trying to fix things that might be later in your level and you can't even see it.

I had a glitch kinda like this (but not nearly as extreme) on my first level I made.. It didnt shake or anything like that. But well basically I had an object with a small peice of dissolve, set to go off when you get close. so one part of it was supposed to fall off, but for some reason the whole object would fall apart when you got close.. IDK I could probably remake the object and it would be fine, but then again its my first level and if I went in to change somthing like that, I would probably end up spending hours trying to remake everything.

Oh yeah as for your problem, nope thats the first I've ever heard of it, try what Ccubbage said... IDK, maybe it'll work...

Yeah, I used to have a similar problem in "Jacques the Acadian Warlord". A whole section would start rattling and doing weird things. Turned out there was a single column that was not glued, and the separate sections each which carried a lot of weight were pressing on it and slowly ripping it apart during play mode. After I figured it out, all I had to do was glue a single column and everything worked fine.2009-02-16 16:54:00

If anybody wants to come and look at the actual level in create mode with me, I can invite them.

And I'll make it copyable, so you can look at it yourselves.

Edit: Can't get on LBP servers atm for some reason... I'll try again in a bit.

Sometimes the "Dr. Spongehead's How to..." levels sometimes randomly shake in play mode. It only happens around once every 50 plays though, and it usually stops after a short while and does not effect gameplay all that much (it just looks wierd).

I'm guessing as CCubbage has said that something is not quite glued right. The problem is that everything is in very close proximity to make it look like one continuous piece, but in reality it's several large and heavy pieces next to each other in grid mode. I'm guessing something gets a minor wobble, like a player jumping at a precise point, and that caused the entire thing to amplify.

It's just wierd and rare. I can't really justify spending a few hours trying to fix such a small and minor issue though. But some day I might find and fix it when I go over the levels to revise them.

I once had a level that worked perfectly in create mode, but once you switched to play mode everything became unglued and fell apart. I don't have any idea why it did this, but I ended up just deleting the thing as it was only a copy of another map with some minor changes. That was a couple versions ago so I hope it's fixed.2009-02-18 16:05:00
