Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge! [With Video!]

Archive: 39 posts

After a very very very long think for an original Survival Challenge I could put in the Survive This! contest, I finally found one.

In this survival challenge giant bouncing balls bounce around, and try to hit you. (Now I know that the title has balls in it, but I didn't want to make you think of something... But I noticed it might be an eye catcher, knowing kids these days...)

Once I had the idea to make this level, I had to think of how I was going to do it. With lots more thinking, I discovered an epic way of making balls that... bounce.

After a minute of play, another, medium sized, ball will appear, helping the other one kill you. Then a bit later 2 small balls, (O gosh...) will join them. But then, the most evil ball will come, one that shoots plasma balls! I have to warn you, this is a very tricky Survival Challenge, that will take some skill. I advise you not to stand still, and to always be on the opposite side of the balls.

Everytime a new ball (or balls) appear, a light will turn on with the same color as that ball(s), and a note will play. Watch this carefully to survive for much longer... or not.

YouTube - LBP Level ~ Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge [HD] With Commentary

I have recently added a new level: Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge (Hard)
After an awesome idea from Hexagohn, which is an Easy, and a Hard level for a Survival Challenge, I decided to make one. Hard mode (Known as 'Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge (Hard)&apos has a whole new theme: Creepy, and Dark. I changed every, dirt, and grass texture, into old metal. I changed the background theme into the Winter Theme. I darkened the whole place, and added many lights, on level, and the balls. I also changed the Rainbow into a giant face, and the sun into... well I don't really know what it is... I also made another emitter at the start, that emits electrified logs, which bumps that difficulty way up. I also added another red ball when the other red ball is unlocked, to, yet again, up the difficulty. If you think you are good enough, and are a master at the normal mode, then definitely try this level out! Oh, by the way, when (or if) you get to the scoreboard, you'll get a little... surprise... lol.

You know I'm cool when I name the balls:
1. The first two blue balls: The Twins
2. The red ball: Red
3. The black ball: Biggs
4. The green plasma shooting ball: Gangy

Here's some tips for surviving: (I would of put it in SPOILER tags, but they aren't working. )

1) Stay away from those balls! - Try to stay on the opposite side of the balls, keeping you away from most danger.

2) Go for the Point Bubble 'Hot-Spots'! - Sometimes, the point bubble tosser throws two balls into one spot at the same time. Stand at that position to get double the points. Maybe later on in the game, you'll get more than two at that spot!

3) FRIENDS! - Remember, when you have more people, it's a lot more fun, and a good way to get every point bubble, without having to put your self in harms way a lot.

4) Survive! - The more balls that are unlocked, (Look at the bottom progress bar to figure out when the next ball will come.), the more point bubbles will be spawned. So the longer you survive the more points you can get, and eventually get some multipliers!

5) Stay Low! - Sometimes balls will hit a corner, and bounce straight across the whole room. Stay low to the ground, preventing you from becoming a pile of ash. When balls are close to you, try to stay on the other side of the small hills, so they hit that instead.

6) Hoard those points! - Get as many point bubbles as you can, as fast as you can, because later on, the difficulty will increase exponentially!

Changelog:

-Glued 2 bars down at level end.

V2.3:
-New, awesome, icon!!! Hooray!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
V2.4:
-When the Black Ball unlocks, instead of just one point bubbles is added every second, the emitter spawns and group of three of them, making getting to that Black Ball, much more appealing.
-The final ball, the Green Ball, now shoots, not only plasma balls, but, point bubbles!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
V3.0:
-After an awesome idea from Hexagohn, which is an Easy, and a Hard level for a Survival Challenge, I decided to make one. Hard mode (Known as 'Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge (Hard)&apos has a whole new theme: Creepy, and Dark. I changed every, dirt, and grass texture, into old metal. Oh, by the way, when (or if) you get to the scoreboard, you'll get a little... surprise... lol.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
V3.1:
-Added a key to the end of each level so you know about the other one.
-Added more detail with decorations and lights to the difficult level.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
v3.2:
-Changed the electric logs to fire logs, (so you can live longer), and put a light on them. (So you can see them coming.)
-Fixed the 'breaking hill' glitch.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
v3.3:
-Hid the pistons with the new feature
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heres the constantly updated highscore, so you know what you wanna beat:
Normal Level:
#1 = CogSpartan - 1,871
Hard Level:
#1 = Horns1983 - 370

Comments will be appreciated, as I am doing F4F.

Thanks!

Pretty cool idea for a survival level. I thought the way you had the ball "bouncing" was pretty ingenious. I must say though, I rarely made it to the second bouncing ball. My suggestion would be to make the first ball a lot smaller and make it out of the floaty material, so that it's a bit easier to dodge. Then the next ball gets slightly bigger each time. I think it'd be cool to be dodging a bunch of small ones than a couple big ones.

Again, cool idea. I had fun with it.

That was a really cool level. It deserves a heart. Really fun, fast paced but the first ball is slightly difficult. The FIRST ball. I wouldn't want to try doing two.

Nonetheless that was interesting to see the ball actually bouncing, good job.

Ok, I switched the two small balls, with the big one, so its a bit easier. But just one small ball is too easy, so I put them both. I also upgraded the background, adding flowers, and some more hills. I also spiced up the Scoreboard so it looks better!2009-02-16 23:28:00

Cool, I finally got to check out the finished product here. It's a million times more upgraded than what you showed me lol

This is one of the best looking survival game I've played, mostly because of the care taken in the environment - especially before and after the match. I like that you included your FI corporate TV in it. Recurring creator staples and trademarks are always a plus for me.

I like this one alot because the behavior of the balls are so unpredictable and random - after awhile in any survival game it's just totally predictable and turns into just a marathon of pressing a certain button sequence ad infinitum until your concentration breaks. This one keeps you more on your toes and offers more variety.

I think we should have a separate forum for survival games and mini-games - they seem to get lost in the mix with full levels, and tend require a different set of parameters for critique.

Thank you very much! I do remember the day I showed you my first concept, man that was pretty lame visual-wise, lol.
I knew I had to have something explain the rules and something that went along with the tech theme, so I chose Charles, and spiced him up.

Hey man I played this a few times this morning but then I had to leave for school. I will play it more when I get home but for now I have a few thoughts. It looks really good, I ddidnt really catch the relevance between the opening theme with the MGS look and the bright sunny look during play but they both look great and it doesn't really matter. The idea is very original and quite fun. I really did not play enough yet to critique game play a whole lot but it was certainly fun while I did play it. I was trying to let the points build up for a bit so I could get a multiplier going but I found they disappeared right before 5 stacked up which is the first multiplier number. I am not sure if you planned that or not but I think it would add another gameplay element for those trying to get first place if they could let it build up to get multipliers. I hearted it and its hard version though I did not play that quite yet (I heart stuff so it is easier to find) and I think I hearted you just because you had so many levels that I want to check out later. Great level from what I have played.

Anyway more a little bit later, thanks for checking out my survival challenge album and congratulations on your ridiculously high score.

Thanks, the points are supposed to be like for the start, then once another ball unlocks more are emitted, making you get a lot of points. When I verse the Red Ball, (Red), I usually get a lot of multipliers.

Also: Ridiculously High Score FTW!!

Okay wow I underestimated how hard this was, I could never get passed the red ball...

Important Bug: From right to left, as soon as you enter the room, the bubbles are coming from above, the first on(on your right) is perfect, the one next to it, just falls straight down and through(??) the grass, and makes a "breaking" noise, you can never get that one because it just falls right through the level, unless a ball catches it in the air and moves it.

Yes, sometimes that will happen, I will try to fix it.

Oh, I almost forgot about the contest. The winner, would be NinjaMCWiz, but he already knows how to make it, but, if he does want it, message me on PSN.

Ok then, the real winner is, after a long hard decision...

Lol, I was on LBP and I noticed your comment on the level, which said you posted it 2 hours ago. I quickly check here, and you magically posted it a minute before. Pretty darn lucky! Also, third highscore? Cool, not many people in their first several playthroughs get that many points.

This is a very nice survival challenge, the difficulty is just right. Those balls **** me off thou, they were moving as if they were following me, which was a good feeling and made the level more challenging. The only odd thing i found on this level is the lifetime on the score bubbles, you should really set it to unlimited lifetime, so that you get all the score bubbles you've earn.

I got Position number 3, Five Stars!!!
Keep up the good Work!!!

The thing is, if I set them to unlimited, (As I have tried before.) it will take up a lot of thermo, and if the player doesn't go everywhere, sometimes the points will stack up so much, that they stop the balls from bouncing.2009-03-25 02:06:00

Thoughts as they happen:

- Star is well made. Weird hearing birds cheep while you`re in some sort of techno-castle (whatever a techno-castle is).
- The next bit is good and a fun contrast from the metal structure I just left.
- The bouncing is very cleverly done.
- I would like more scoreballs. They seem awfully scarce for a score challenge.
- Don`t think the music fits the scenery very well.
- I suck.
- It`s very cool when you just avoid getting hit by a ball

Overall, 5 stars, a 'hectic' tag and a heart. I look forward to having a go in multiplayer.

Pardon? What star? Also more score bubbles do come, you just have to be skilled a survive long enough. Then you get giant multipliers and a very high score!

First off your level looks really good, and well detailed. The theme I really liked it was colorful. Your level is very creative on how you used Rockets to bounce the balls, and you increased the difficulty after a certain amount of time each round, very nicely adding more balls to the stage! I like how you even made different types of balls and named them.

Just 3 suggestions maybe if you can make the strings holding the arrow in the beginning invisible, and the piston holding the starting checkpoint. Also maybe it would be cool if you added power ups in your level to help you out like a shield and other stuff, that would be really cool!

Also this might happen rarely, but at one time when I was playing one of the balls bounced really high up, but it never came back down so just wanted to bring that up.

Overall this level is addicting and really fun! 5 Stars and hearted!

Also thanks for leaving feedback on my level really appreciated it!

Hey Cog,

1st impression: Interesting starting environment.

let me rate the quality of play excellent. I like the mini-level design...I don't play many but I like them.

Your bouncing balls (hehe) were really cool to look at. (grin)

The different colors with the glowing (electrify ed) spikes (I think they were spikes) were real cool looking. Their movement was strange but their unpredictability is what made it for me. Loved that each time it is a different game.

I also have to say that I don't understand what the entrance is all about. Its not like bouncing balls should 'be' anywhere in particular. I would have just started in the grassy hills and walked them over. A custom made flower could have told you what you needed to do and so on...

Some of decorations you put out seem a little strange. I think its on the left side on the sloping hill above you are some kind of yellow flowers...they look a little strange they way they are laid out. You might have been going for a field of flowers look but it really doesn't work. It would be better if you clustered them to look like bunches springing from the hillside.

I know this has nothing to do with game play...but...it is really the only thing wrong (if you can call it that) that I found with the level.

Got the 2nd highest score!

Alot of fun but tricky!

4 stars tricky tag

Thanks for your feedback!

@speedydemon67
Some strange things happened and they became visible again, I'll go fix that. Also power ups are things that I had thought of before, but didn't really know how to implement them. I think they may ruin the challenge.

@AJnKnox
I'm confused at what you are saying about the entrance...
I'll fix up those flowers, maybe add some other things too. Did you knock me to third, or was I first place? I'll go check. I did get the highest score (In my video) but the scoreboard was being mean and said; "Failed to Upload Score." I think I was still first though...

No you were still 1st! But I am going back!

Please don't take my comments harshly...I loved your level.

It seemed weird to me to start in that building and then go out where the flowers and hills were.

Since bouncing balls don't have a usual environment and you made the challenge area so Bright and sunny and sweet it just seemed strange.

My thoughts were if you just started in the rolling hills and you walked over.

Or started in a country cottage and walked outside...to me either of those makes more sense.

But as I said before those are only my opinions and are only aesthetics and really don't matter

Right just gave it a try (Normal mode).
How do you give feedback on a challenge level if you are really bad at them?
I really liked the idea of the bouncing balls. Haven't seen that before (Maybe due to me playing very few levels), but it's definitly a concept that works great and seems to be very random, so even if you do play it again (I played it three times) you can't tell where you should go next in order to not get hit by the balls.
I never got much further the red ball, but I guess that's okay. There are enough easy levels out there.

The only thing I didn't like much was the low humming noise at the start of the level, but that too could be just me.

So, overall very good but probably more fun with friends than alone.

/is not very good at giving feedback for challenge levels

Thanks for the feedback!

The buzzing noise is supposed to be the sound of a computer. So when you get close to it, it turns on, and so does the noise. It only lasts several seconds so it shouldn't be that bad.

For most people, the red ball is their stopping point. But you can usually survive past it with friends, and once you have played for a bit. My record is almost to the green ball 'Gangy'. The black ball is pretty tough.

Also, for future reference, if you can't think of feedback for the challenge in the challenge level, go for the next most important thing; the visuals.

Thank you!

Hey thanks for the feedback! i tried your level too! First of all, I like the styles of both difficulties. I also love how the look changes, other level are simply rehashed. The gameplay is also great. But how the balls bounce perplex me.....The mechanics are great too. Love the levels. But for a player like me it's really hard...^_^...Oddly I survived longer in hard mode.. O_o Once again thanks for the feedback! Love to talk again soon.2009-05-17 01:32:00

Quick return of F4F after you gave feedback on my Arabian Adventure. Thanks for that.

I played the normal mode version and thought it was really difficult although I think most levels are difficult because I'm hopeless.

It was a great concept but I couldn't last more than about 15 seconds because the balls were just so big. I don't know if I'm just unlucky aswell but I seemed to keep getting 2 come at me at once and even though I managed to avoid one the other got me.

I had a few tries but didn't do very well on any.

Great work though still and I'll try again sometime. Gave it 4 stars and hearted anyway.

The level is supposed to be hard, it's meant to be played numerous times so you become better and better.

The balls both come at you at the same time because of the secret AI I never put in them

I'll add you on PSN later, then I can give you some tips

Wow, great level!! I really love the look of the arena, it's so colourful and cartoony, and is such a pleasant background to a fun level!! The mechanics of the level are great, the balls are unpredictable and fun to avoid...I especially love that you named all of them, I definitely get the impression that each one has its own personality (or maybe I'm imagining this bit )

My only complaint is that the camera at the very start of the level (before the minigame even starts) is a bit jerky, the camera angle seems to shift really suddenly and strangely as you run through the corridor to the start the challenge. The only blemish on a terrific level! 5 stars and hearted for later.
