AWZOMEMANS REVIEWS: Tree Fortress 2 by Splapp-me-do

Archive: 3 posts

When I first saw the name of this level, I thought "Oh, it's going to be a parody of Team Fortress 2!" Then I actually started the level...It's not a parody of Team Fortress 2. It's really a level about a tree fortress, and is probably the most obscure, twisted, and hilarious levels I've played to date. We all probably played Lovely Caves of Death when it came out only to see if ol' Splappy was any good at making LBP levels, and I'm sure some of you (including me) thought that Splapperz was a mediocre level designer. Well prepare to eat your words, people who doubted Splo-me-Dapp including myself.

I played number 2 before I played the first, and it doesn't really matter which order you play the levels because they have no real plot. You're sackboy. You go to Tree Fortress. Then in the sequel I guess you go there again. And underwear man gives you 20 pounds when you make it through Tree Fortress. So then Sackboy did some research on how much a pound is American and decided it was worth it. Both of them were quite good, but I found the sequel to be much better and funnier.

It's a solid level on it's own, original platforming obstacles and such, but it really is MM quality. Tons of different materials that all match the level, a lot of attention to detail and decorations, and all around silliness. I was going to attempt a level like this that made no sense before, but the floating baby head the shot lasers wasn't really working how it should, and when I couldn't have the floating baby head I decided to call it quits. This is about as weird as it gets on LBP, and I was surprised that the "Weird" tag wasn't the giant one, instead beautiful was, and I guess it is beautiful if you're weird like that.

This level is hard to explain. I feel that if you are interested in the level by now that you should go check it out because I might spoil some of the extremely awesome weirdness inside. I mean, I am sitting here actually laughing at what was in the level...it was hilarious! And there really is little dialogue in both the levels, just the enemies and characters are so funny!

So just let me tell you about the characters. I'll put this paragraph in spoilers because they're the best things about the level:
One of the characters is...well..I forget his name, but I think it was Underpants Gentleman. In the original, Underpants Gentleman bets you 20 pounds that you can't make it through the Tree Fortress. You make it through Tree Fortress...then he gives you 20 pounds.
Another character from the original is what I'll call: Knife Wielding Crab. Knife Wielding Crab runs around waving his knives around. You have to jump on his brain.
There's also an enemy I'll call Guy With Spikes and A Brain for a Head. GWSAABFAH has spikes and a brain for a head.
One that you'll get attached to quickly is Kitty Box. Kitty Box is almost like the companion cube from portal. You will cherish the moments you spend together. It meows, and I believe it screams when you grab it.
There's also Laser Spitting Flower. When you read in the description "Don't pick the flowers because they may shoot you in the face," you may think that it's a joke. ...Well it's not!
And Finally, we come to my FAVORITE enemy in the level and in all of LBP: Giant Flower with a Laser. The reason Giant Flower with a Laser is my favorite character is because it screams when it shoots at you, and you too will succumb to laughter when you first see it.
GFWAL is closely followed by farting volcano. It's a volcano...that farts.

The art style is great. Splopp-me-Daa put so much attention to detail in this level, it really is astounding. There are also tons of collectibles. I still haven't found Giant Flower with A Laser, so I need to find that. I really just want to make a giant version of him in Create mode. All the enemies are MM quality, each are dangerous in ways I've never thought of.

I think it's safe to say that this is my favorite level in all of LBP. I gave both 5 stars both of the times I played them, and I also hearted you, Splappers. If you haven't played this level yet, do yourself a favor. Go on your PS3. If there's someone playing your PS3, beat them up. Put in LBP. Search for Splapp-me-do in the search engine. Find a level by him and then go to "more by this author." Heart both levels so if your PS3 shuts off then you don't have to wait as long to play them. Press X, then Press X again and enjoy.
