Mobile Armor

Archive: 12 posts

I had an interesting little idea today. I was playing EarthMusic & Agni with my brother, and those of you that are familiar with this great level will know the main gimmick: You spend most of the time flying around with a jetpack that is attached to a very light block that you have to carry around all the time. It acts as a hinderance at times, and sometimes it's used to solve puzzle.

Now, a funny thing happened: There are sometimes checkpoint right below block dispensers, and when my brother came out of the checkpoint after having died, he respawned INTO the block and was stuck. The jetpack was still functional though, so he basically just flew around as the block. This intrigued me a lot.

I've seen several levels like where you are into some kind of spaceship already, like Maraz' Super Color Shooter. However, those games always ended when the ship was destroyed. I think there could be a way to make an actual long level where you play inside some kind of ship, or as I envision it, some kind of mobile armor, flying sideways, and still keep the standard LBP checkpoint system intact.

Basically, there's an emitter that dispenses the mobile armor right above every checkpoint. As soon as your current mobile armor is destroyed, the emitter is timed to throw out another one just in time for you to respawn, placing you directly in the new armor.

The mobile armor can be equipped with a simple paint switch to simulate hit points, with all the enmies firing paint bullets. There's an explosive inside the armor hooked up to the paint switch that detonates you and the armor when you take too many hits.

The armor will have to be made mostly out of sponge or flaoty material so it isn't too heavy to properly fly - I've conducted some tests already, but I think properly balancing it will need some work. The weight is focused on the bottom though, so that it keeps a relatively stable upright position.

The interior has to be grabbale, with a grab switch to fire some kind of bullet or another weapon. I think the fact that you have relatively free control and an easily replacable armor makes it possible for many creative forms of attack - you could equip it with a non-shooting weapon, possible a sword, as well.

I'm currently working on another level, but I might tackle a project like this when I'm done (Provided MM fixes my corrupted save file soon D: ). Your input? Any kind of feedback is appreciated.

This sounds like a fantastic idea, however i have a question:
If it is going to be made of floaty, how are you going to stop it floating away when the character jumps?

Except for that, it sounds like a great idea.

someone made a level that has a mech you can fly around in. i dont know the exact name but if you type in "this is training? armorboy", you should be able to find it. the level icon is a white face with a gold or red star on the forehead. it should have thousands of plays and a 3 star rating (deserves at least 4).

when you beat it, you get a mech. then you could study it and make your own

You're equipped with a jetpack the whole time, and the space you have is extremely small, so you can barely move, and not jump at all.

The end of the level I'm currently working on contains a ship exactly like the one your thinking of making, and at the end a key will be given to the follow up level that I will be working on once this level is finished.

Personally I have never seen this done and thought my method to be unique, but I see from other posts here that that may not be the case now (which is unfortunate as I really thought it was going to be something no one had seen before... oh well).

I have a flyable prototype already made, and would gladly invite you to my moon to show you what I've done and how it works if it will help give you some idea's. I would only ask that you don't directly copy the ship idea or design.

Let me know if this interests you at all.

I'll gladly accept that offer, and I'm sure I can draw some inspiration from it. I'll send you a friend request when I come online today.

I was going to mention that, too. Great level. Some parts are difficult but the polishing and all the effects are wonderful.

Oops... missed ya again! I should be on Monday evening around 8:00 (Ottawa time... not sure where you live?).

Just look for me any time and message me. I'll pop out of whatever I'm doing game-wise and let you take the machine for a rip. Should only take 5 minutes to show you how it works.

Cheers!

Check out my "Pod Flying Minigame Tech Demo" (search "@dcf" and look at eastern australia.) It shows off a tool that I have built that basically does exactly this. The demo is fully playable, just short. I'm currently working on finishing a full level using this tool and I also plan to give the tool away as a prize.2009-02-23 16:35:00
