Corner Editing Tool

Archive: 17 posts

Hello everyone.

I see a lot of creators who say this is a tool you MUST use, since it's just THAT good.

I myself have never used it, and i don't see the uses of it.

Could someone please explain me what it does, and how it could be used?

I don't mean the tutorial, because all you learn there is how to make spike hair on a dull sackboy...

Thanks in advance.

Well you grab, move and create corners with it, this is a much better way to create any complex shapes that are not entirely geometrical and canbe created with the square / circle tool and grid...

I use it for practically everything, if i want to make a tree i put a bit wood into the level with the square tool and then i move two corners up so that i get a long rectangle, create some new corners a the top move some out to create branches and then i spend a lot of time on smoothing the shapes out and make more branches that stick out from the larger bases to give it a more natural feel.

Basically you create a lot of corners and move them around to make different things, this is much better than the normal tools as you don't get a lot of unnecessary ugly thermo heavy corners, it is much more precise and you can create so many more things with it than with just the normal tools.

You should learn to use it, it will make things so much easier for you.

Marklin explained it perfectly. If you use the grid a lot it's also usefull to make your shapes connect perfectly with something else AFTER you created it.

Also keep in mind that after you glue a lot of stuff to a shape, the corner editor won't work anymore. (I'm not sure that glueing stuff to it is the problem but it seems to be it)

Yeah that's a very irritating bug which makes the corner editing tool annoying to use, but i don't think it is caused by gluing things together, it seems to be caused by a lot of different things and is very random. I've seen the bug on single shapes that weren't glued to anything at all . The best way to counteract it is to simply reverse until you can edit the corners again (assuming it came up whilst you edited the shape), deleting and redoing the object or start using the more primitive tools instead (which is next to unthinkable to a corner editing addict like me :eek.2009-02-16 10:15:00

I never used the corner editing tool in my levels. I tried it once, couldn't get the hang of it.

But how Marklin describes it.. makes me look like a villain :[

I've also noticed a few times that it doesn't want to work if the object you're trying to edit is touching something (even if it's free, and not glued/bolted to anything). There have been a few times where I've only been able to edit something by first moving it away from everything else, editing it, and then moving it back.

Can't say I use it much either though. Mostly because it often won't work for me. Sometimes even if I do what I described above (shapes that don't seem too complicated to me... I never get any such warning, it just doesn't do anything).

I've recently tried to use this tool - to varying degrees of effectiveness. Basically I've given up on using it on new shapes but I've been having more success using it to fine tune my shapes and shave off some of my thermometer when the level is getting close to overheating. It's amazing how many extra corners get made that you can loose. Saves a ton of thermo depending on how many you have on the level.

A good tool to learn the basics on at the very least.

Personaly, i think it is a really GREAT tool. There is some limits, but i quite use it for all my custom content. It permit to construct far more precises objects than with the "deleting" method.

Shortly, this tool give you the total control of the shape form...

Lol I've never used it myself too xD
But that's because i barely have to make complex shapes....

I'll have some idea, and the corner editor will be the obvious solution, and then I'll go to use it on the shape in question, and...... it refuses to DO anything. Im never sure as to exactly WHY.

Yeah i've been experimenting with making nice trees, and rocksides. But i had this "bug" or glitch or whatever like 5 times already... If it really is a bug, and it gets fixed sometimes then i might use it a little more, even though making practically everything in the small grid makes it a little useless...2009-02-18 11:26:00

Yeah, the bug is INCREDIBLY annoying. Many a time I've tried to edit something, but it won't work if it's touching the ground/boundaries or any other object....2009-02-18 12:23:00

It's not too tricky to circumvent.

Generally speaking the corner edit tool works regardless of whether it's glued or not to another object. The "bug" is the game's way of telling you it cannot reshape your object because it's shape is locked.

Usually, this is because your object is contacting another object (which is relatively sporadic in nature.... usually contact isn't a problem for the shape tool). Detach, move, reshape, reglue usually is enough to fix it.

Objects seem to have better chance of being editable if you reshape them shortly after making them. Going back to reshape an object you added in 20 hours previous is probably not going to work.

Anyways, even with its inconsistencies, I could not live without the corner edit tool. Good post Marklin, you nailed it. It's better on thermo, and gives you prettier shapes in the end, and is great for closing up seams in your level. It's often easy to identify creators who don't use this tool. To me, its like the equivalent of a child's finger painting compared to an experienced artist's canvas. Lines and curves are much much much cleaner when going you use it.

Of course, if you're a vertex perfectionist like myself, expect it to consume a LOT of your creating time.

I love the corner tool. Sure it's a royal pain in the neck a lot of the time, but the corner tool is simply invaluable. I love it. It makes getting things just right, that much easier. Currently, I'm playing around building a level from a template. Not all the materials in the template are available to be used, so when I'm carving, I have to use the corner tool to patch up the holes that I've made in the level. Without it, there'd simply be no way to do it. It really is too bad that it's such an incredibly fussy tool, though... and worse so I can't seem to make any rhyme or reason out of why it's always so frustrating to use.2009-02-19 21:46:00

The corner editor rocks! I'm not sure why it sometimes refuses to move corners, but when it works, it's awesome for carefully shaping custom objects. I've noticed it only fails if you edit a complex object that's attached to another complex object (something with lots of corners).2009-02-20 01:25:00
