SA reviews "Treetop Escape"

Archive: 1 post

Sir Linque as he wishes to be called has created with Treetop Escape something I like to call a "High Score Skill Level", a level that is literally covered to the brim with score bubbles and death traps, and trying to beat the level with the highest possible score is the general aim. Treetop Escape specifically takes advantage of many different aspects that the game has to offer, mostly of course the physics, and tries to test your knowledge of the ins and outs of the game.

So, needless to say, it's the kind of level I generally enjoy. Although alternatively, I believe this is also a level that just about anyone can enjoy.

You start off having escaped from a very vicious tribe that had decided to lock you up in a cage, but due to unknown circumstances you managed to break out. It's up to you to now go through this immense platforming madness to get yourself free from the enemy. That's really about all there is as far as story components are concerned. It's not especially extravagant, but for the purposes of a survival level, it will do.

The actual gameplay is certainly nothing less than a treat. The platforms are wobbly, the jumps are tough but fair, and the general atmosphere is well orchestrated. In this particular level, the challenge lies mostly in trying to maintain your score multiplier, as with the level design it is incredibly easy to get the multiplier up really high but to maintain it constantly proves to be pretty difficult. Because the goal is to try maintaining the multiplier, you often find yourself in a hurry to get through the stage and that overall is what causes the level to be difficult - The Rush.

It's a level that is constantly hard pressing you to get a move on, slowing down and taking the level easy is certainly fine but for the purpose of achieving a high score you really need to make all the precision and momentum based jumps as fast as Speedy Gonzales. Although because the level also allows for the player to take his time investigating the next set of platforms, it is also a very easily applicable stage for anyone who wants a fairly relaxing simpler experience. To this, I have to give Sir Linque a pat on the shoulder for creating his stage with his entire player base in mind, both the pros and the casuals.

Next, there's the matter of appearance, and while the level certainly doesn't have enough absolute splendor to be the next cover for a Daft Punk album, it certainly has enough variety and style to be on the cover of possibly a tribal rhythm album. The theme is very centralized: it's the jungle, and it could not be more obviously the jungle unless it had a plethora of monkeys and other random canopy critters. The appearance by itself is not really what makes the atmosphere appealing, but also the choices for music to go with. At all points of the level I felt like the music choices were perfectly chosen to match each individual part of the level, and perfectly arranged to match the rest of the environment. In short, the level is adequately arranged on both a visual and an audible level.

In summary, it's a very solid level. I suppose the only problem is that the style kind of limits itself, and some of the platforming segments are a little too unforgiving, but it is mostly well done is almost every regard and definitely stands out as one of the best levels I've ever played.

Final Score:
9.5 / 10
Fun, fast, and full of flying fancies. Maybe a little too fast at some points, and overall pretty challenging, but also intended for the slightly less tempered crowd as well.

On a side note, Happy V-Day.
