Little Big Contra - 7 man project coming soon

Archive: 21 posts

Ok... MisterAnderson/Leonidas2123 is putting this epic project together on the neogaf forums. I got picked up into this project late in the game about 5 days ago because one of the original authors dropped out but it's almost ready to drop in the next week or so, and we've got a great roster working around the clock to perfectly recreate every level in the original 8-Bit NES Contra, down to the last detail LBP style. I figured I might as well get the promotion train rolling here.

Some of us are done and just testing things out, trying to polish it off and milk the last millimeter of therm for some details, but I'm confident that the whole set of levels when it's released are going to blow you away.

Those pictures look fantastic. I had this game on my iPod Touch and I only recognise the first level because it was so hard!2009-02-14 18:30:00

... give me a minute to pick my jaw back up from the floor.

Okay, jaw's back into place, but I unfortunately can't find the words to describe how awesome that looks.

My buddy who hates LBP is going to go completely bonkers when he sees this. He's a pretty big Contra fan.

Yeah, hopefully it gives him a change of heart. I don't have a membership at neogaf, but I was reading the thread and it seems like a majority of the people who are going crazy over this idea are games who still haven't picked up LBP... I'm hoping we can push a few units with this lol2009-02-15 00:01:00

i was talking to a friend of mine today about LBP and he was asking about what kind of levels you can make. I tried describing some when out of no where he said "could you recreate Contra in LBP?" I said, "I'd think so, but I haven't seen anyone do it yet." Well, I have now and it looks awesome.2009-02-15 02:09:00

I have had the pleasure of already playing three of these levels and all I can say is that it is going to be special, especially for us old-school guys who have very clear memories of playing Contra on NES 2009-02-15 07:50:00

This is flippin crazy looking. I've been keeping an eye on it from afar, but since I'm not a member of neogaf I can't join, comment, or do anything.

I think there might be a thread here for this already though >.>

I'm in the same boat. I have been keeping track of this for some time. I think this will be epic, especially when you got people like donkey show, jaeyden and ninja making levels.

lol yeah, I just pretty much pasted over the thread from neogaf, and omitted some of the less-impressive pictures. ugh, Leonidas took the pics of my snowfield and they're terrible. He said all kinds of things were turning invisible when he snapped shots, and the entire bluelighting effects can't show up on cam - he took the shots a day into the project though, so expect a much better finished project when they ok us to release them. I think ma and Jaeyden are totally done, and Waterfall might be finished too. Base is probably the hardest one's to do because he's got two levels to make and the mechanics of a Libidus style-3rd person shooter is a real pain to implement.

This is actually Leonidas' first level ever, and I've got to say he's a natural... he's definitely taken all the knowledge he can from us and created a level that's leagues ahead of anybody else's first effort. Dude is constantly asking questions... I haven't played donkey show's grand finale yet, but I might venture far enough to say Leonidas' level is my favorite so far. They're all sick though.

I'd like to start getting feedback from both Contra fans and not so Contra fans alike...if anyone is interested in testing my level and offering some critique I'd certainly appreciate it. 2009-02-17 01:25:00

Yeah, my levels up now and unlocked too. I'd consider it beta, but I'm more or less tapped for ways to improve it without destroying what it is - a simple run and gun, a challenging level, and a step-by-step recreation of Contra's Snowfield. I've barely changed it since finishing it a couple weeks ago.

The level's already tagged with 1 star, you will not beat it on your first try, but I can ace it without even trying - Leonidas can too. The only way to make it easier is to put traditional ground checkpoints all over the level, and completely lose the mid-air respawn from classic Contra. So if you'd like to give it a run and give some feedback other than "too hard" or "add [something]" (therm = no), then please have at it.

So are all the levels being published now betas? I was under the impression that stage 1 would be published and all other levels would have to be unlocked successively.2009-02-24 01:25:00

Nah... I think me and Jaeyden are the only one's that have published so far... none of them are gonna be done in unlockable progression. There's no way to link them to other authors when the key is obtained, so we figured all that would do is cut down on plays for everyone involved since many people will never beat the first level, or might not find the first level before finding someone else's.2009-02-24 02:15:00
